ii. Twenty Two
Lifeline. The blinding white fluorescent light was the first thing that greeted Byunghun when he opened his eyes to a massive headache and a thick white gauze over the left side of his forehead. Taking a second to recollect what exactly happened, his eyes widened as he shot up from the bed ignoring the sudden dizziness that had attacked him roughly pulling out all the IV lines and stumbled clumsily out of the ward on his unsteady feet.
“I’m sorry is there a patient named Lee Chanhun admitted?” The boy wheezed, trying to steady himself as he panted, hands gripping tightly on the edge of the counter at the nurse station.
The nurse types at a desktop computer furiously and scanned the list with her beady eyes before turning her attention back to Byunghun giving him a shake of her head.
“Nope. No Lee Chanhun at all in our records.” She stated as a matter of factly.
“How about Lee Chanhee?”
The nurse’s fingers dances across the keyboard once more, eyes darting up and down as she scanned the records.
“Lee Chanhee. Ward 1004. Tenth floor, fourth bed.”
“Thank you!” Byunghun briefly thanks the woman before dashing off once again to the lifts, pressing the buttons repeatedly in a haste in a futile attempt to bring the lift the the level he was at quicker.
Opting to take the stairs despite an ominous nauseous feeling building up his chest, the boy impatiently pushes open the doors to the staircase landing before starting to run up the stairs as fast as his short legs could carry him. By the time he reached the tenth floor, Byunghun was drenched in perspiration as he staggered over to open the door, leaning heavily on the doorframe for a moment to catch his breath and gather his remaining energy. His frail hands held onto the walls to steady himself as he slowly made his way to Chanhee’s ward, obviously worried about the latter’s condition.
When he had dragged Chanhun out of the house in a moment of anger, a black SUV had made a beeline for the father and son as though the driver had an intent to kill the both of them. In the nick of time, Chanee had rushed forward to push the both of them away in which the impact had sent Byunghun flying forward, his head slamming onto the hard concrete ground before making him lose consciousness before he could even check if Chanhee or Chanhun was alright.
The boy finally arrives at the ward as he peeked in, finding Chanhee with a nasal cannula strapped over his beautiful face, just resting underneath his nostrils. The said was lying peacefully in the hospital bed, deathly pale with the white sheets pulled all the way up till his neck as a tear-stricken Wooshin just sat by his side and stared. Sohyun was standing in front of the bed in her doctor’s coat, not even bothering to look at her patient folder as she stayed silent without her usual smile, holding Chanhun close to her.
“Chanhee hyung...” Byunghun crumbles onto the ground before crawling over to the man’s bed, curling his fingers around the protective rail barricade on the right side of the bed.
Looking up at Wooshin for
