"we're gonna be late, why are we stopping for coffee?" minah whined as we rushed through the bustling streets.
"unnie, i never go to dance without my coffee," i said, opening the door to cafe plus, letting unnie walk through first. "it lets me keep going until 10, the last class of the night."
"aish, you go so hardcore," minah sighed as we got in line. "i don't know how you juggle school and all of this dancing."
"well, i am majoring in dance in college, so i like to think of this as... practice," i said, fishing around in my bag for my wallet. "i'm going to be doing this for the rest of my life, i might as well stay in practice."
"whatever you say, dongsangie-ah," minah said, ruffling my hair gently. "just don't burn yourself out, ok?"
"welcome to cafe plus, how may i take- oh, hello, emiko," the barista said, flashing his signature smile. "off to dance again?"
"hi, seokmin-ssi," i said, smiling softly at the barista. "yes, we're running a bit late, so just the usual, please."
"one dutch iced coffee with extra cream coming right up," seokmin said, scribbling my name on the white cup. "and what can i get you, miss?"
"just a small caramel cappuccino, please," minah said, side-eyeing me with a playful glint in her eye. "emiko comes here often?"
"everyday after school," seokmin said as he neatly printed minah's name on a cup. "she always gets the same thing, so i've just memorized her order at this point."
"i see..." minah said, nudging me softly. i chose to ignore her, handing seokmin a neat stack of bills and coins.
"exact change, thank you," seokmin said, flashing his smile once again. "i'll see you tomorrow?"
"yes, i'll be back," i said, moving to the side to let the next person order. "see you tomorrow."
"have a nice day!" seokmin said, waving before he went back to work, taking the next customer's order.
"emiko, i don't understand why you don't date," minah said as we exited the coffee shop, sipping our drinks. "that barista's cute, and he seems to like you."
"yes, well, i see him every day, so we've gotten to know each other a little," i said as we headed towards the dance studio. "but you already know why i don't date."
"unnie, you're not protecting anyone by locking your heart away." minah said. "the fact that you have words on your wrist means your soulmate is out there."
"ok, a valid point," i said, rubbing my wrist like i did whenever someone mentioned 'soulmates'. "but you know what my words are, and there is no way they can be viewed in a positive light. i'm saving someone from the heartbreak they'll have by getting close to me."
"emiko-ah-" minah started.
"unnie, your words are probably someone else's dream," i said, watching minah subconsciously touch her inside wrist. "mine... are sad. they're full of loss and heartbreak. i'm not doing that to someone, even if we are meant to be."
"alright, alright," minah sighed, tossing her empty cup into the garbage. "but he wrote his phone number on the coffee cup."
"i know," i sighed as i tossed my cup into the garbage. "he does that every day."
besides, i had already memorized the number.
