At present, Lian’s hair is a more natural medium brown, and when he’s left to his own devices, he doesn’t change the color much. He prefers to keep to more natural colors, but some lucky fans will remember and even have saved images of Lian with sandy blond or caramel hair from predebut.
Lian does have his ears pierced a couple times -- two lobe piercings per ear and a couple helix as well -- but he tends to forget to put anything in them, normally sporting either nothing at all or simple stud earrings. He also has a two tattoos, though he’s been careful to keep them well hidden from fans, and even from most of the A1 boys. The first was one Lian got after choosing to pursue dance as a youth. The second, Namsun was there while it was being inked. And while they arne’t something Lian can necessarily hide forever, he does his best to continue to keep them under wraps. The first is on the outside of his right thigh (about the length of his palm), the second is on his shoulder and is generally hidden under his shirts. When he wears tanktops or other revealing materials, it’s either covered by a patch or makeup.

When out and about to private schedules (like to the salon or to fittings with stylists, or to similar events) or when he’s aware he’ll be seen by the public (like on the sets of music videos, photoshoots, on the way to schedules), Lian will opt for classic and comfortable styles. Jeans (mostly without rips, though he’s got pairs with...artistic holes in them) and shirts. Predominantly band shirts (he has half a closet full of them), snarky sayings (the other half of his closet) and solid colored tees. He’ll bring a jacket usually, something lightweight, and is known to either tie it around his waist or discreetly pawn it off on a member that forgot theirs and is cold. He opts for sneakers usually, though can be seen with boots.
To practices, Lian prefers swears and sports shorts and more of the same shirts. He’ll also wear tanktops in the warmer months or when he’s been working for a while and he doesn’t have plans to do much more than practice. The only deviation from this is when they’re planning to recover, wherein he’ll opt for clothing that is more tidy (looser fit jeans) or otherwise less revealing.
Around the dorm is a mix of the above styles, generally something clean and comfortable. He doesn’t have anyone to impress and he doesn’t particularly care to impress. At home, he's generally barefoot, though he can sometimes be found with those nice super fuzzy/soft aloe spa-type socks in the cooler months. (He’ll fight anyone that tries to make fun of him.)
For awards shows, he’ll dress up in a similar style to however the others does. Suits and tie, dress shirt and pants and shoes. Whatever. It’s not really his style, but it’s classic and he pulls it off easily. He won’t go out of his way to obtain special suits or tailor-made items, he’ll get suits made and adjusted as necessary and really only own like three of the things unless someone else drags him out to go shopping. (And as soon as the event is over, you knows he’s going to strip down and find something less stuffy and a hell of a lot more comfortable.)

Lian is the kind of individual that walks the razor thin wire between confident and arrogant. He’s good -- he’s great, arguably, one of the better dancers of the generation -- and he knows he’s good. That confidence of his is a bread winner when it comes to performing, because it gives him an edge that other can’t even begin to touch. But he’s not the best, and he’s not without fail. (And yes, he knows that, too, but part of his confidence is being aware of his weaknesses and working to better them.) But Lian’s confidence can and sometimes does come across as arrogance because he’s so unapologetic about it. He knows his weaknesses, what he can do better, and he works to do exactly that, but it doesn’t stop Lian from playing up his strengths and playing into the image that fans and other idols have of him as a spectacular dancer. But because of his tendency to play up his strengths and his all around confidence and swagger about it, it can be seen and taken as arrogance.

One of Lian’s greatest strengths is that he almost always knows exactly what he wants, and he’s more than willing to not just work to get it, but to work as hard as necessary. He works ridiculously hard to maintain his skill level in any given field, and to better himself where he’s lacking. Lian knows the value of hard work, both as a dancer in general and in the field of someone working to make a career longterm of being an idol. It means setting goals, often high ones, and pushing until he gets to them just so he can set the next bar a little higher. There’s some perfectionist tendencies in there, an unwillingness to stop or step back until he’s reached a level that he’s comfortable with, as well as a tendency to push and push and push until he has nothing more to give. But there’s stubbornness there, too, as well as pride. Lian isn’t as critical of the others of A1 as he is with himself, but he does hold them to a higher standard, especially the dancers. And often if Lian has sequestered himself in the practice room, it’s going to take someone just as stubborn as he to drag him back out before he’s ready to go.

If there’s any one thing that Lian can be counted on to do, it’s watching. Sound screepy when you think about it like that for too long, but the fact of the matter is that because Lian is more soft-spoken, more prone to stepping back and observing than steering the conversation, he’s also more prone to seeing everything as it happens. He’s observant, and because he’s always watching, always seeing, always learning, then he’s one of the most informed and in-the-know members within A1. If something is happening, there’s a very real chance that Lian knows exactly what’s going on and has all the details. And with that knowing, Lian is unerringly practical. He takes all the knowledge he collects and uses it in the moment. He’s a hands-on individual, preferring to actually do rather than work in theory, something that applies not just to his overall attitude, but also to his learning and teaching styles as well. He’s great at taking what he’s learned and applying it to situations he encounters.

Lian is honest to a fault, and while he does have knowledge of the application of tact in a tense situation, he’s more prone to being blunt and open about things. After all, he has better things to do with his time and energy than dance around a topic or situation. He’d rather be blunt and open about his thoughts and feels and just get it out of the way. For the most part, it works well with the other boys of A1. They know exactly how Lian feels about them, how he feels about situations. He’ll handle things right then and there and speak his mind. And if he doesn’t like you.... Well, Namsun is still working on training Lian in the age-old wisdom of “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say a damn thing.” For the most part, it’s going. (But sometimes Lian just can’t hold his tongue. In those situaitons, it’s not uncommon to see him frown and just...walk away.)

As a performer, Lian aims to be versatile. He learns what he can when he can, everything he possible can. New styles, new genres, new choreographies and old. If he can attend worships, he does. When he has downtime, he’s often watching videos of other dancers, learning their tricks and learning from them. His aim to be confident and able in every field possible, to be one of the most well-rounded dancers within the industry. Because of his determination to be more, to do more, he’s viewed as bold, for being so willing to go out and do, to take risks to learn and know more. He’s a performer through and through, confident and courageous and living showmanship.

Combative might be a strong word for it, but Lian is, to a fault, the sort of individual that doesn’t take kindly to aggression or to individuals that posture or attempt to intimidate others. Authority figures, really. He’s just got a Thing -- capital T and all -- about people using their authority or even their assumed authority to make things happen. He’s also fiercely independent, which doesn’t always work terribly well in his favor. Or in anyone’s really. Lian does things on his time, on his terms, and he has issues being caught relying on others for too much. (For anything at all, really.)
aloof, introverted, stoic
Lian is more quiet than most of his peers, introverted, reticent. He tends to speak more when spoken to rather than starting the conversation, and is known more to sit on the sidelines than interject himself into the thick of things. It doesn’t mean he’s not paying attention -- because he is, and you can be assured of that -- but more that he’s just better with the quiet. It’s hard for Lian to be open about his emotions and feelings. Ironic considering he’s so open about everything else, but when it comes to how he personally feels, Lian tends to clam up and lock it back down. He has issues to work though when it comes to his worth as a dancer within the company, especially after Fantagio decides to scrap the original lineup of seven and makes it a lineup of thirteen. It’s helped to imbue feelings of unworthiness in Lian, causing him to retreat more from those around him, especially the newer members of A1, giving him more reason to be aloof and reticent.

[ BACKGROUND ]

Lian was born early in the morning on July 31, 1997 to Chen Dawei and Haoming. At the time, he was the only child in his family, and though his parents weren’t exceptionally well-of, things were comfortable for the trio. With Daoming as an IT support specialist and Haoming as a secretary in a doctor’s office, the two were able to provide for themselves and their son as well as provide support for their own parents as they aged.

As only children from their respective families, Dawei and Haoming qualified to have a second child under China’s One-Child Policy, and after much discussion, the two agreed to try for another child. On April 29, 1999, Chahua was born. Chahua was, much like Xuelian, healthy and beautiful, and despite the slight increase in financial burden, the family continued on as normal.

Music had always been something of an interest for Lian, but it was never something he took seriously. He sang along to the radio in the mornings as his mother cooked the family breakfast, and he danced like all children do when they’re excited or trying to mimic something cool they’ve seen. But it wasn’t until Lian was accidentally introduced to Bi Rain, a freshly debuted solo artist from South Korea, that the idea of music took on an entirely new concept. Despite only being five years old at the time, Lian begins taking more of an interest in music, going so far as to request lessons in piano and to watch more shows that Rain and similar artists appear on.

In the years that follow Lian’s discovery of Rain, TVXQ and Seven debut. Lian also discovers existing groups like Shinhwa, and he takes a liking to their sound and the flashiness of their stages. They’re not just singers or dancers, they’re performers, and Lian falls in love. In the years that follow, Lian takes an increased interest in music, and in dance especially, and he goes out of his way to seek out lessons and to learn from whatever music show recordings and programs that he can find. 2004 also sees the release of Rain’s It’s Raining, which quickly becomes not just Lian’s favorite song, but also his inspiration. It’s in October of 2004 that the idea of becoming an idol is born.

The next few tears sees the debut of more groups, many of which Lian takes an interest in. Girls Generation, Shinee, Kara, 2AM, 2PM, IU. There’s a vast variety of music to listen to and enjoy, from ballads to spectacular dance-heavy pop numbers, and Lian is truly in love with it all. He learns all the dances he can, practices hard at the piano, and puts on shows in those mornings in the kitchen, serenading his mother and younger sister with an enthusiasm that is charming and a bit naive. (His Korean is atrocious, but the fact of the matter remains that Lian is learning it at all, and through exposure to music no less!) But all of that pales in comparison to mid-October when Rain, Lian’s favorite musician, has another comeback. Although Lian’s parents don’t know it yet, Lian decides then and there: he wants to be a musician. He wants to be a performer. Lian wants to be an idol. He spends the next year or so learning Korean -- for real, from books and guides rather than just from songs -- and working at convincing his parents to let him pursue his dream.

Although Lian’s parents aren’t terribly thrilled with the idea of their only son going off to a foreign country to become a trainee, the decide to humor him. At thirteen years old, Lian is given his wish to venture to South Korea. His father takes a shortterm transfer to a South Korean branch of his company, and father and son move to a small, cramped apartment in Seoul. Between adjusting to the new city and attending school, Lian submits audition tapes and attends auditions on the weekends until, unbelievably, he’s accepted by not one or two, but three different companies. With acceptance letters from JYP, Pledis and MBK in hand, it should surprise no one that Lian’s first impulse is to accept and join JYP Entertainment. After all, JYP was Rain’s home for several years, and Rain is still his idol.

For the next two years, Lian trains hard. Despite not having the greatest Korean, he makes friends with a number of other trainees. Some of the artists in JYP speak Chinese -- a few even are Chinese -- and he finds himself in good company among them. Despite his more reserved nature, Lian finds himself respected by his peers, and between them and his own determination, Lian’s skills grow by leaps and bounds. But everything changed in 2012 when, after a period of several hopeful months, JYP debuts the JJ Project. Lian isn’t part of it, which isn’t a huge deal, but in the weeks that follow, Lian finds himself increasingly distanced from the boys he’d been grouped with until, in early 2013, Lian finds hismelf excluded from most of the trainee group’s projects. He doesn’t realize it for another couple weeks, but he’s been cut from the project group that JYP is preparing to debut. By the time Who is Next: WIN airs in September 2013, it was as if Lian had never been part of the group. At the end of 2013, Lian leaves JYP Entertainment, his trainee contract having expired during his time at the company. Rather than renewing it and hoping for another chance, Lian takes his chances and leaves.

At the start of the year, Lian begins sending out audition tapes again as well as setting up in person auditions at various companies. Using what he’d learned at JYP, Lian tailors his auditions and chooses his companies more carefully. In March, after a handful of rejections and even more instances of being ignored completely, Lian gets a response from Fantagio. After a followup audition, Lian is given an offer. With his parents continued, though however wary, blessing, Lian takes it.

★ dance — Taeyong, NCT [bu: Yibo, Uniq] x x x — Very strong, powerful style of dance. Could almost be called aggressive. Excels in hiphop and powerful concepts, but has worked hard to perform well in more fluid, modern styles. He excels in freestyling, both a more professional version, where he shows his skills as a dancer, but also in a more variety-focused manner, where he aims to show off but also entertain.
★ vocal — Wonho, soloist [bu: Joshua, SVT] x x x — Generally has a softer, distinctive edge to his voice, making it easy to pick him out from the others. Has a slight lisp if he’s not paying attention or hyper focused, much to Lian's flustered chagrin (and the general delight of A1’s fans). Can also take on a rougher quality that sounds good in hip hop and rock styles, ie, but can just as well hold his own with belting, high notes, held notes, and just in general against A1’s main vocalists ie.
★ rap — Seoho, Oneus x — Rap isn’t his strongest point by any means, but Lian has a pretty decent sense of rhythm and flow thanks to years of dance and time spent hanging around Namsun, so he’s picked up a few things here and there. He’ll never measure up to Namsun, or to any of the other rappers of the group, but he can hold his own in a part switch or in unit songs if they need someone to rap a few lines.
★ speech — Yibo, Uniq x — In general, Lian’s voice when speaking Chinese is a bit higher, because it’s more innate and familiar, and his Korean is a bit lower (and slower) because he’s careful with his word choice and because sometimes it takes him a moment to mentally translate and find the right vocabulary.
