OTHER NAMES

우에노 카이토 the hangul of the romanization of his japanese name, mostly used for administration purposes during his time in south korea.
kaito-kun considering that he's japanese, a lot of people decided to call his name while attaching "-kun" at the back, often humming the "-kun" or using a naval voice like in the japanese animations. used by close friends, teammates or just fellow classmates alike. even ambrose tsai calls him this.
kai-waii a clever play on words, combining his first name and "kawaii" because look at him, he's adorable. many close friends and teammates love to call him this to . he doesn't mind.

baku-san it comes from the legend of his species, the baku itself where it says that a person who wakes up from a bad dream can call out to baku. a child having a nightmare in japan will wake up and repeat three times, "baku-san, come eat my dream." legends say that the baku will come into the child's room and devour the bad dream, allowing the child to go back to sleep peacefully. also, the baku can also be summoned for protection from bad dreams before falling asleep.

japanese his mother tongue and due to his origins, he is accustomed to using the kyoto dialect, an inner kansai dialect. nearing eight hundred years of living, kaito has a wide knowledge of the various types of japanese from the old to the early middle to the late middle and to the current modern japanese. he has a strong base of reading and writing kanji due to his age and isn't as familiar with hiragana and katakana as current normies are.
english the foreign language taught to him in the classroom growing up, still taking take it up as a elective in foreign language class because he seems to enjoy learning the language. it's also because he thinks it's crucial to know enough english to survive in the outside world later.
korean well, he's currently a foreign student in south korea so there wasn't much of a choice for him. he's a quick learner and is going to continue improving. if you see him diligently studying unlike the student-athlete he is, he's not cramming class subjects... he's learning korean by himself but is always asking around so people can help correct him or complete his sentences. he wants to be able to speak the language fluidly so he's always trying.

human form his eyes are golden during the day and dark grey during the night. he's capable of lurking in the shadows or the night's darkness in his human form but he still has the voice of when he's in baku form. (other than that, he looks like shotaro during make a wish era)

STYLE he doesn't wear his uniform the way he was told. he tucks in his shirts so he can wear accesories like jean chains and statement belts that stand out. he uses a clip-on bow tie so that he doesn't have to wear a necktie around his shirt's collar. he wears pants of colors other than the one he received, usually matching his shirts with his pants but sometimes mixing colors like white and beige, black and beige, black and white.

despite the earliest human records of the baku came from around the 14th to 15th century, the baku themselves have been around even before then. ueno kaito himself was born in the year 1228 and his sister, even older, in the year 144 bc. the mythical creatures and monsters of japan are known for their long lives and for their cautious approaches to living life alongside normies. kaito’s family were no different, both his parents having the total of around sixty nine thousand years of life when put together. kaito grew up in kyoto, one of the most creature and monster populated places in japan. he was in a neighbourhood full of different spirits, creatures, monsters, and descendants of japan’s legendary creatures. he felt comfortable, secure, and safe. the neighbourhood’s residents helped each other find jobs, the kids were friends with one another, and most importantly, they made sure their identities and abilities were well-hidden to normies. of course, to some creatures, they were regarded in a positive light but that was not the case for monsters or spirits whose lores were centered around villainy or wickedness.

for kaito and his family, being a baku meant that he protected others against evil and sickness. however, the rather distasteful (that is how his father phrases it, expressing dissatisfcation at how illustrations of bakus were more rough and made their species look less nice than they were) historic illustrations of the traditional baku have caused many misunderstandings regarding bakus such as himself. he, as a baku, indeed has an elephant’s trunk, rhinoceros' eyes, a fox’s tail and a tiger's paws but he was not as intimidating as the sculptures or illustrations depicted him to be. in fact, bakus are shy creatures. despite having hundreds of years being misunderstood, he was used to it yet somehow, it still stung the same amount of pain every single time he felt as if those who acted nice in front of him may not have pure intentions like he did.

it hit him when he was around 400 years old (around 15 years in human age, the age where a normie would assume that he's going through "puberty") that he was slowly getting tired of consuming other’s nightmares. yet, he couldn’t stop. that’s what he was born to do and lives off of. every night, he can see one’s happiness, delight, or thrill when visiting one’s dreams and if a nightmare occurred, he consumed them to protect someone. he was doing a good deed but there was an emotional emptiness (not hunger-provoked). he wanted to be protected too. he wanted to have someone to share his nightmares with. however, kaito was not emotionally mature enough to deal with his emotions and chose to avoid facing them at all, suppressing them as he continued on with life.

he bursted one day, almost causing one of his sister riko’s friends (who was sleeping over due to a sleepover party) to live an empty life after nearly devouring all their hopes, dreams and desires. at that moment, kaito was surprised, scared and realized something from his actions. he didn’t know his limit. he didn’t know if this was caused by his emotions or “hunger”. he reflected, almost gaining a smash on the head by his sister and her friend (who thankfully, after calming down, forgived him). he didn’t have everything figured out like his sister riko and this signalled something to his parents.

his parents encouraged him to be sent to the best creature or monster school to learn about himself and his limits, provided that it can also help him freshen up as he goes to a different scenery and environment than where he lived right now. his parents are one of the wealthy and influential creature or monster families in kyoto, given their constant long-living and perseverance to survive. they invested along with several other powerful kyoto households in daeghoul fright about three hundred years ago, pushing forward a proposal or idea for a partnership with the best school in kyoto so that they can start an exchange program to students (this would later translate in them encouraging daeghoul fright to build an university that will also partner kyoto’s best university for a funded exchange program).

life is all about timing and for kaito, he was at the right time as his parents pat him in the back and told him to start packing his bags. his father sternly told him, “son, it’s time for you to head to daeghoul. maybe that new environment will do you good in figuring yourself out.” as the youngest child and only son, kaito could only nod to his parents’ decision. deep down, he wanted to get away from the usual scenes of kyoto that made him realize this inner angst that he’s been suppressing. kaito did think to himself, “perhaps, going away will do me good, after all.” so, that was how he ended up as a so-called “trial” student from kyoto, entering daeghoul fright as a foreign student in his freshman year.

― night vision no matter how dark or pitch black the night is, he can still see clearly regardless of whether he's in his baku form or not and it still works even if he's sleepy or unwell or ill. he didn't think much of it until people pointed it out that it's a great attribute because it helps him a lot in his daily life. kaito still laughs when he thinks about it, who knew not bumping into things or people when trying to find the light switch or door or bathroom due to his night vision was a good thing?

powers

devouring nightmares the powers he was born with as a baku, only able to use it if the person having the nightmares realize that they are having a nightmares and choose to wake up or continues to close their eyes. in short, the person having nighmares have to be aware that they're in a nightmares since he can sense when one is having nightmares so unlike the legend of the baku, ther's no need to chant "baku-san, come eat my dream" three times for him to appear.
the ability to see someone's dreams along with nightmares it is the reason why he doesn't need a chant, unlike what the legends suggest. this power allows him to not mistakenly devour one's good dreams. he can see the dreams and nightmares of people that are within 3 kilometers of his location in which he can select whose dreams or nightmares to see. it's not like all the dreams and nightmares attack him at once but he can preview them one by one before choosing one to focus on. he doesn't need to make physical contact with someone to know their dreams and nightmares.
camouflage, teleportation he's able to be one with the shadows and darkness of the night, camouflaging himself so that he is not detected by normie senses or by other monsters or creatures. paired with this is his power to teleport from one place to another. it explains how he's able to hop from one person's bedroom to another without being noticed. he's able to teleport during the day as well, though he's not able to camouflage with his surroundings like he does during the night.
shapeshifting into his baku form self explanatory. he stays camouflaged with the shadows and the night's darkness in his baku form. it's so that normies don't see his human form. he can shift back to his human form and only other monster or creatures can see it. even if he shows his human form to another monster or creature, a true normie in the same room will see him as his baku form. half normies or those who are born into monster families will be able to see him as his human form.

side effects

the good his powers are good for others since it helps people sleep well through the night without any bad dreams and even if he uses his powers at night and loses sleep, he doesn't feel any fatigue because he's fulfilled his portion of "hunger" regarding nightmares. it gives him a sense of empathy or sympathy towards others and sometimes, it helps him bond or interact with them. after almost eight hundred years of life, he can tell that his powers help him understand the state of someone's inner well-being that's often overlooked or left unspoken since his powers allow him to see both the dreams people don't talk about and the ones that are bizzarre, abstract, funny, or worth telling others.
the bad his powers being more beneficial for others than it does to himself raises the question: how does he stay nightmare free? the answer is he simply cannot. he's never free from nightmares as he lives on them and due to them overwhelming him more than not, it sometimes drains him emotionally at times. if he does his nightmare devouring on days where he is feeling unwell or ill, he will experience headaches and cold sweat the next day. due to his powers being associated with darkness and bad dreams, it goes against what he wants to be known for; the good person that he is underneath all the nightmares and shadows.

HOW HE EATS NIGHTMARES devouring nightmares is viewed as a neccesity for a baku and despite the lights out rules in daeghoul fright, he finds a loophole. when the lights of the student dorm in daeghoul fright is completely out, kaito is able to focus and use his powers more effectively. he can detect whose having nightmares even quicker and can teleport even faster too. of course, he's careful not to be seen in his human form when devouring the nightmares of a female student. the way he can eat a nightmare is to approach the person, make contact with their forehead or shoulder (the spot where you can feel a pulse), and inside his own mind, kaito must chant, "nightmares do come true".

THE BAKU PARENTS

the relationship of kaito and his father is rather stiff compared to when he's with his mother only because his father's personality is rather guarded and strict towards his only son, his younger child. kaito understands this behaviour from his father and has caught several occurances in which his father expresses his affection in his own methods so kaito knows well in his mind and heart that his father is always looking out after him, just in his own methods different from others.

befitting of a history teacher whose wisdom comes from her living experience, kaito's mother is always understanding and warm with her opinions and advices towards him. his mother taught him well, from his manners, ethics, attitude, and behaviour towards others and people can point it out that kaito was raised well within his family. kaito adores his mother a lot and respects her never-ending ambition and goal to continue teaching others about the subject of history in order for her students to avoid the worst possibilities of the future and to not replay the mistakes of the past.

seo "winter" hayan, FATED TO PLAY CUPID
first meeting winter through devouring her nightmares of snow storms and avalanches, kaito really got to understand her more and they bonded after having shared talks about other deeper things every now and then. winter became a familiar face within the crowd and kaito always greets her whenever they bump into each other or see each other in between classes or sports practices. right now, kaito is looking to bridge the relationship of winter and a certain gumiho senior by playing cupid as he knows most of her inner nightmares and insecurities which he would inform that gumiho. if it can help the two progress faster, why not?

YI HWON, THE GUMIHO SENPAI
they first met when hwon was extremely surprised by the sudden appearance of kaito from the shadows to which he shouted "for the love of all livers, !" and kaito spent three minutes apologizing "summimasen". even after they've bonded over reminiscing about their pasts and inner angsts of life, hwon still has not gotten used to the habit of kaito popping out from the shadows. hwon's heart goes soft at the sight of kaito because quote, "you make me want to protecc your uwu , kaito-kun". hwon's curiosity towards winter was the start of kaito's role as the cupid between the two and naturally, he started to be the bridge within the two. hwon sticks around kaito and vice versa because when he looks at kaito, hwon is reminded of the genuine good side of himself he's long forgotten after past events.

ambrose tsai yuhsuan, caretaking nurse

kaito feels comfortable being taken care of by ambrose because ambrose and him can communicate more easily through english rather than korean so kaito sees him as a reliable big brother that he can go to when he has certain things to ask that he cannot utter in korean. ambrose, having been in daeghoul for a while now, understands the struggle of being a foreigner and looks after kaito just as others have done for him in the past. sometimes, kaito can be found using the nursing room as a place to rest or nap.

RIKO UENO, OLDER SISTER, 1,875, 22 ^{human age}
kaito and his sister are an interesting pair of siblings. they know enough about each other to call their relationship family but other than what they need to know, they don't really care. despite that, riko still looks out for him and just when kaito feels like she's a great sister, she goes and secretly borrows from his closet to which he also does the same from hers. the two don't bicker and contact each other occassionally, when it's needed. riko is usually the one who contacts kaito first to ask about his day at daeghoul right and sometimes, kaito would have to be faced with lists of things riko asks him to buy in south korea before he goes back to kyoto.

JIN BONHWA, UNDER AMBROSE'S WINGS TOO
kaito first saw bonhwa when he was going to go to ambrose's nurse office to consult several things. kaito knew immediately who bonhwa is because he remembered his nightmares of abandonment, death, loneliness, not being accepted for who he is but of course, kaito didn't say a word. the two don't talk to each other and only exchange greetings whenever they bump into each other when they want to see ambrose. even so, bonhwa knows that kaito is a nice guy because he's heard of kaito's personality through others before. it only takes a small gesture from one of them for them to start talking and honestly, if only bonhwa knew that kaito knows of his struggles, he could rely on the baku boy to talk and love himself.

MU LIAN, THE BOY WHO DROWNS IN BAD DREAMS
despite not being in the same year or extracurriculars, kaito recognizes lian as he is one of rare male fearleaders and the er ball and casketball team are fond of the fearleaders. of course, kaito sees through lian from his nightmares of being isolated, not accepted, and losing everything he had. little did he know, this was all going to play out in the wake of the incident of 2019. kaito was surprised to hear the incident's victim was lian. of course, now lian appears to be over the incident and tries to reassure others but kaito knows better that he's still not over the unfairness of the incident's aftermath. lian's current feelings are clear as kaito still sees lian still drowning in his nightmares every single night after the incident. with this, kaito wants to be able to help him get out of the water. he doesn't want lian to drown again.

WANG HAENA, TICKING HOT FIRE BOMB
kaito was warned by his classmates about wang haena. she's someone he should definitely know among the older years and after seeing her in the fearleading squad during games, he understands why. she's as hot as fire, he could tell but he knows better than to judge her because she's more than that. despite not having frequent interactions with him, haena knows him from hwon and winter so she also knows of how nice he is as a person. kaito is still hesitant to approach her himself because honestly, he was and still is intimidated by her from the moment he saw her.

SIM DONGHAE, ER BALL TEAMMATE
donghae is a fellow junior year tudent who only shares one class in common with him so kaito thought he didn't have any chance to become close to him. he knows donghae as one half of the sea searpent siblings so kaito was surprised and also excited to see donghae join the er ball team last year. they've become closer ever since sophmore year and donghae does help kaito interpret and understand several korean words he may be having difficulty with. kaito, in return, tries to teach donghae about er ball seeing as he's not as naturally confident as he is when he's with the swim team.

OH HYERIN, A REGULAR IN HER NIGHTMARES
often known for being a ghost liar whose truth and false becomes unknown and uncontrollable due to the curse, hyerin is suffering inside and it shows to kaito because every single night, he has to devour her nightmares. one night, hyerin wondered who made her sleep well and decided to try and figure it out. upon seeing kaito, her curse immediately caused her to spit out lies and kaito just silently listened to her without questioning the truth or the lies. it was then that the two are in a mutual agreement where kaito gets to devour her nightmares and hyerin will repay him with baked goods or buys him his favorite food or beverages. kaito agreed to this because he doesn't see any bad in it and is glad that he could help hyerin out.

GUO SHUFEN, ER BALL TEAMMATE

cursed with having to live as both a female or male every twenty four hours, kaito sees shufen more as a male during er ball practice and games. shufen is often nice to kaito and tries to take care of him since they're both foreigners (and the fact that shufen is a senior so he wants to give off a nice image to those in years below him). kaito feels the warmth in shufen and enjoys playing er ball alongside shufen. kaito forgets of shufen's curse and more than often, gets surprised when female shufen greets him in the hallway.

the incident of 2019

reaction he isn't closely acquainted with mu lian but as a student-athlete in the casketball and er ball teams, he knows that mu lian is a part of both the fearleading team and the fearmongers so as someone who likes the fearleaders and fearmongers, he was angry and frustrated that the normies at DAE were more brutal, rough, and heartless than the monsters or creatures at daeghoul fright, some actually having cold blood within them. how dare they do such a thing to one of their own? where is the heart in that?
response he was in kyoto at the time with his family but he knew as soon as he heard the news that he had several normies to visit at night. he had to visit the dreams and nightmares of those normies responsible and it sickens him to find out that they hold no remorse from the incident. he let those normies go through their nightmares, opting to send a message in his baku as they twist and turn in their sleep, "nightmares do come true... yours forever, for the rest of your life."
current feelings the incident itself caused him much sympathy for lian, especially after knowing the dreams and nightmares he's had now that he's now a spirit. his heart goes out for the guy despite not knowing him well. then again, kaito really started to believe more in his powers, seeing the truth in his father's words that he could really get to know a person through their dreams and nightmares with them. the incident boosted his confidence and worries within him about his powers because they can backfire on him but if he can use his powers for the good of all monsters, creatures, and normies alike, why not?

dorm kaito tried to make his side of the dorm by making it minimalist and by adding a touch of his favorite color, black. he keeps a closed closet instead of an open one since the minimalist style he has will become a mess if he doesn't keep everything tidy. he does have clothes hangers near his bed that he arranges on the day-to-day according to his schedule so that he can easily change into his training wear after classes and pack clothes to change into easier. his desk is rather empty compared to others because he doesn't give much thought to decorate it as he knows he wouldn't really spend much time sitting by his desk due to practices or going out during his free time. he keeps everything tidy, making sure to fold everything and organize by color.

reputation considering his participation and relations within the two sports teams he's in, kaito is often seen as a jock but not the most popular ones. he's not much of a loud presence compared to other people in his sports teams but people will know him when asked the question, "do you know kaito ueno?" and many will reply, "ah, isn't he the japanese kid who plays sports? he's a pretty chill dude." kaito doesn't put himself out there like other jocks or fearleaders (he'd mention the captain, wang haena as an examlple) but he's there so people seem to recognize him and take note of him for future references when they come across him in class or in the hallways. he's mostly known for his chilled-out and kind behaviour regardless of his status as a jock or a part of daeghoul fright's competitive sports teams.

general relationship
his junior year classmates knew he stood out from the moment he arrived in daeghoul since he didn't seem like a local and it was obvious he was of foreign origins. that was why people have fond sentiments towards him since despite his foreign origins, kaito always tries his best to adapt, learn, and improve himself. he's always asking to his classmates and practices his korean all by himself. it's also the fact that he may seem tough or like a troublemaker but he's actually soft-spoken and just cute. students from other years may have heard of his well-liked behaviour and have taken note of it, although many may still not be quite familiar with him. students from other years will be able to associate kaito's name with his appearances and whispers when they seem him on the er ball field or casketball court.
