born and raised in a family of doctors, kazuki was brought up with the expectation that he, too, would eventually become a doctor or go into another 'respectable' profession. he didn't much care, growing up, since it was the only profession ever presented to him. in elementary school, his father took him to work for 'take your child to work day', and kazuki had the chance to interact with real doctors and even see a real surgery taking place.
he fainted. turns out, knives and blood aren't really his thing, but it was okay, because he could just not become a surgeon. things progressed until he was in middle school, when he participated in a study-abroad program to england. his parents didn't want him to live so far away for six months, but they agreed that it was a good learning experience for him.
while in england, kazuki became close friends with an older classmate, yabu kota. he learned that kota was only on this trip because his parents wanted him to become a lawyer and according to them, all successful lawyers need to study in england. but his real passion was music, and kazuki didn't really understand why he would choose music over a 'respectable' profession.
kota didn't explain much, but he dragged kazuki out to london's underground rock scene and introduced him to music and fun, stuff that he'd never experienced before in japan. kazuki thought it was great, but he thought it was too messy of a job to do for life. after the program ended and they returned to japan, he started hanging out with kota more, even though he was a grade above him and in 8th grade.
he didn't realize that he had feelings for his friend until he was 16, and they were hanging out on the swings in the park. the sky was blue and the trees were flaming orange, and the wind blew past and made shivers on his skin, and when he looked at kota, he thought his heart hurt a little bit. he sort of knew that boys weren't allowed to like other boys, but they were friends, right? and friends wouldn't mind such trivialities... right?
he was right; kota didn't mind. in fact, he liked him back! so they started dating secretly, and everything was fine for a year. but then, one of kota's friends found out and turned his back on them, spreading rumors of their homouality across the school, so everyone knew about it and shunned him. none of the parents or teachers knew, and kazuki's parents refused to pull him out from school just because 'kids don't like you'. unfortunately, being the sensitive boi he is, kazuki couldn't walk into school without being bombarded with jeers and death threats, and eventually, even thinking about school made his chest constrict, and he would spend more and more time in the bathroom shaking, trying to breathe, than actually sitting in class and learning.

he thought his anxiety was pretty manageable around this time, but whenever he started having too much fun, he'd think about kota and how it was supposed to be him having fun, and then the guilt would come back, and sometimes, he couldn't even go into the bathroom for fear of seeing a body in the bathtub. after consulting with changsoo, kazuki started chanting in his head 'i'm living your life so you can be happy' each time he was plagued with thoughts about his dead boyfriend, and to some extent, it did work.
