shenghui grew up in a poor village on the edge of nanjing, china. his family did agriculture for a living, and shenghui honestly grew up thinking he would become a farmer as well. fortunately, by the time he was born, the village had enough money and labor to afford to send their children to school in a nearby town that was bigger than the village. it was there that shenghui realized just how poor his family was.
many kids made fun of shenghui and his village friends for being poor, and when shenghui brought it up to the teachers, they only shrugged and said that he should ignore those kids. to be honest, shenghui didn't realize that the teachers liked the richer kids better until he was much older. right then, he was just hurt that the teachers wouldn't help him because he thought that teachers were supposed to help all the kids.
the only teacher who really liked him was the music teacher. she would teach him how to sing and how to read sheet music, and when shenghui was in fifth grade, he joined the school choir. there, he finally felt like he belonged. no one made fun of him for being poor; instead, the choir kids all told him that they liked his voice, and that made him happy beyond reason.
when he was in middle school, shenghui often zoned out in class. melodies played in his head, and he wanted to write them all down to show his new music teacher (who also liked him a lot). unfortunately, his grades dropped, and his parents forced him to drop out of choir to focus on his studies. he was angry at first, but when he stayed behind to talk to his teacher, she told him that his parents were very thoughtful because 'you have to have good scores to get into music school too!'
thankfully, shenghui raised his grades, and his parents allowed him to join the choir again. he was happy up until high school, when the pressure of gaokao (college entrance exam) nearly crushed him. his old insecurities about being poor returned since his high school was located in a richer part of town and everyone around him had cool clothes and fancy new technology and he didn't. his friends from middle school went to different schools, and shenghui didn't have any friends.
the first year was okay, but halfway through the second year, his mental state steadily deteriorated, both from school and from the fact that he didn't have any friends to share his pain. his only salvation was music, but his parents were considering making him quit choir again (fyi chinese high school is only three years, and they take the exam the third year, so they're pretty much done learning halfway through the second year and spend the rest of the time studying). he knew he couldn't quit or else he'd shatter, but he also knew that his parents wouldn't understand and would make him quit anyway, so he started spending more time alone in his room, writing out all the melodies in his head.
during the summer, shenghui met a group of indie composers who worked in a studio close to his school. they accepted him for who he was, and he started hanging out with them a lot. while with them, he felt relaxed and actually happy since these people knew what it was like to love music as much as him. but shenghui also had to go to study sessions that his parents paid for, and he didn't want to waste their money but he genuinely didn't think he could study so much without breaking down.
it was then that one of his composer friends suggested smoking to ease anxiety. shenghui wasn't any stranger to smoking, his dad smoked, and so did every man he knew, but he'd never considered it for himself. now that the option was presented to him, however, he didn't think it'd be too bad and accepted the offer. the results were marvellous, and when he smoked a cigarette, he could slow down and take a breather. the musky smoke brought the world into sharp focus, and he could just use that time to relax and not think about anything.
of course, his mother wouldn't be happy if she found out he was smoking underage, so he hid it from her and only smoked one or two a week, when he was really stressed. it almost became his reward at the end of the week, and that was how he got through the entirety of his third year.

dw i'll get more in depth in the actual character but basically he's a very quiet kid who's shy at first so it seems like he's uncomfy around you and doesn't want you to be around, but in reality he very much would like to get to know you but doesn't know how to express that. once you do get to know him, he's quite cheerful and has an innocent kind of humor, though he's still sort of awkward. he exudes awkwardness.

kazuki entered beau entertainment in 2015, and being foreigners, they just bonded naturally. even though shenghui doesn't know japanese and kazuki doesn't know chinese, they noticed that the last character of their names matched up, and that brought them closer in an instant. since shenghui tends to be a mom friend and kazuki riddled with insecurities, shenghui often finds himself taking care of kazuki a lot, and kazuki goes to shenghui often when he needs to talk.
