Personality. 

daebyeol started off as an insecure girl that let her self esteem be determined by how others viewed her and what they said. but after learning to accept herself she was able to reconnect with her inner child and go back to the confident self loving daebyeol.

the confidence that she now has allows her to come off as very chill. she can talk to anyone with no problem and can be playful, even a bit touchy since she's comfortable in her own skin. she takes many things with a grain of salt not letting much stir her up. she feels she already went through so much degrading that nothing can hurt her anymore. since she feels that she lost her childhood she is lenient on her members when it comes to messing around during practice (in reason) and just having fun. it can make her seem irresponsible since some things she deems fine like going clubbing might cause scandals but they're young adults, they might as well live it up while they can since they work so hard. she's actually very responsible just might not seem so to somes standards.

since she's went through so much it has allowed her to be very wise. she always has some words of wisdom to say and knows just the advice to give her members for almost everything except love since even she doesn't have much experience. but she doesn't mind being a mother figure to the girls, they can really ask her anything and she'd answer them honestly. she sees her members as her kids and wants to protect them from the horrors of the world. but it also comes with the less fun qualities like her nagging when they're not listening. but she doesn't nag often, it takes a lot to get her to nag.

its hard to get anything past her because shes so observant and can see the little things in people. she can spot someone with an eating disorder from a mile away just from their habits. since she sees herself in almost every trainee she can seem a bit overbearing trying to solve their problems instead of letting them live through it because she doesn't want them to struggle. but sometimes its just apart of their journey and she has a hard time accepting that.

when it comes to her own feelings its hard for her to talk about any struggles she's going through that aren't major like what she went through before. she just feels like its not as important even though all her emotions are definitely valid.

Background.

born in daegu and raised in a loving home daebyeol had a good life growing up. she went to an international school, many thought that meant she was rich but she was actually admitted because her mom was the music teacher there. her mom was an aspiring opera singer all her life, she performed on stages in europe and america since opera was bigger there than in asia. she wasn't a big time legendary opera singer but she did have respect as someone with a lot of experience. her father was an english teacher in germany at the time of her mothers performance in the same country. he went to her show and it was love at first sight basically. even though he was just to random regular dude in the audience he somehow secured the bag they ended up getting married and settling in korea. her dad was actually born in america but was korean so he definitely wanted daebyeol to speak english since it was more comfortable for him. hence, international school.

daebyeol was basically born to sing. her mom didn't pressure her at all, instead it came really naturally. she was singing as soon as she could and had a powerful voice since the beginning. her mom trained her herself and she was apart of the school choir since kindergarten. she didn't even have to be a kpop fan to know that she wanted to be a singer. daebyeol's mom knew that being an opera singer was difficult in itself so she encouraged her to auditon for entertainment agencies.

of course the first place she auditioned was sm entertainment. she was actual told by the staff that auditioned her that she had a beautiful voice but she was too fat and to come back after losing weight. believe it or not it was the first time daebyeol heard that. she was aware that she was bigger than average but she was confident in it and it never bothered her. of course sometimes boys at school made comments but she always had a sassy comment right back for them so she never took it seriously or thought she was fat.

daebyeol's parents didn't like that they told an 11 year old to lose weight and be back. they assured her that she was fine and the right company would accept her how she is. thankfully it didn't take long to find because next she auditioned for jyp and got accepted.

ex boyfriend / jin minguk / 12/25/1989 / producer & songwriter at dal media / enfp / fc: loco  minguk became a jyp songwriter/producer in 2013. he made a lot of the songs at the time and when jyp appointed daebyeol to become a songwriter she worked with him. they got along really well and began a relationship a few months later. he was her first serious boyfriend and she was happy in the relationship. he was a good guy that always told her she was beautiful and treated her with respect. they made some amazing music together and he helped her improve her skils a lot. he didn't know all the struggles she was facing at the time because she never told him since she didn't want to be judged. she never thougth he'd understand anyways. they dated for 2 years until she decided to leae jyp and since she wanted to leave it all behind that included him too. she did the whole its not you its me thing and they were both left heartbroken. after breaking up he's dating once more but it was short lasting and never compared to her. he still loves her and is hoping for another chance but didn't recommend her the job just for that, he actually thought about her. he wouldn't be overly aggressive about it. he's still a supportive and nice guy that she used to know.

groupmates / pandora / mom to all the girls. she saw a lot of them training so they already looked up to her and opened up to her since they saw her as so udnerstanding. so now that she's in the group they respect her and go to her for any issues and comfort. she knows that a lot of them are young and immature so she tries her best to protect them yet let them have some fun too because as a trainee she felt like she missed a lot of the fun of childhood.

best friend / bae "suzy" sooji / 10/10/1994 / actress & ex idol / infj / daebyeol was suzy's first friend during training. she only trained for a few months before getting put into the miss a lineup with daebyeol. you'd think they had beef but suzy was really nice and they they were the same age at the time while the rest of the group was older so of course they gravitated towards each other. suzy is the opposite of daebyeol, she's beautiful, one of south korea's loves that can't do any wrong which is also why she admires daebyeol. even after she debuted they still talked and suzy told her about the idol life and all the guys trying to date her. but she hated having to be composed and pretty all the time. she wanted to go wild since she was young but she was never able to and still isn't able to. its like the public only saw her beauty and forgot that she was only 14 when she debuted. suzy wishes she could be as free as daebyeol, she loves that she could be weird around her when they're alone and she won't judge. she can say the most outrageous thing and daebyeol would encourage her to let it out because she knows that she holds back a lot. suzy is known as unproblematic but she really loves some good tea so when they meet daebyeol tells her the idol world tea and she tells her the actor world tea. based on appearance they're unlikely friends but opposites attract and suzy loves daebyeol with all her heart, she'll show her support for her in anyways she can.

ex boyfriend / lee "joohoney" jooheon / 10/6/1994 / idol in monsta x / enfj / her first boyfriend was actually jooheon, he thought she was pretty and asked her out.  they dated for 5 months in 2012 and he was her first kiss. they broke up because she was honestly insecure and clingy all the time and he couldn't deal with it. they remained friends after though but haven't talked since he left jyp not too long after. when they meet again after daebyeol debuts he'd she shocked to see her because she's nothing like the girl he dated before. he thought she was hot before but now she was insane. they'd have a friendship that turns into casual because they are young adults with healthy libidos and she isn't about to have with a stranger at a club that could give her an std so its a win/win for both of them. when they're not doing that they'd have a wholesome friendship full of friendly banter and encouraging words. they'd even hang out just as friends too, their flirting isn't crazy to give anyone the wrong idea. they're both very supportive of each other and want the best for each other but definitely don't want a relationship together.

Trainee Life.
daebyeol joined jyp thinking that her amazing singing voice would get her to debut in under a year since they already accepted her for how she looked. boy was she wrong. daebyeol was never around so many talented people, you'd think she'd feel intimidated but she really loved it actually. she enjoyed learning from new people and making friends with similar interests, monthly evaluations weren't even that stressful for her because found them to be fun. she knew she was talented enough to not get kicked out so she didn't have anything to worry about.

the first year was really good. she didn't feel much pressure besides being away from her family was hard. there were a lot of nice people she met since she was one of the youngest there. the beginning of a long dreadful journey started in august of 2006. jyp confirmed that he wanted to debut a group called wonder girls and 12 year old daebyeol was in the running to be apart of it. for the first time jyp and staff were nitpicking everything she did. suddenly she wasn't pretty enough, wasn't skinny enough, wasn't a good enough dancer. she was really thrown off guard because she got good reviews up until now. she was put on a strict diet to lose 9kg in a month and it was like torture but she did it. even after all her efforts she was eliminated from the lineup because of her age, they were going to debut in february and daebyeol would still be 12 which was way too young. something that she had no control over when she tried so hard to be what they wanted. they could've easily waited for her to turn 13 but obviously they didn't care enough to do so.

other than the homesickness, this was the first experience she had with the bad sides of training. since she wasn't a regular trainee anymore, she was considered to be in a group, they were harder on her than before. when hyuna left wonder girls she thought it was her chance so she went on a very restricted diet to lose more weight and show that she was debut material but they chose yubin instead. after so much rejection in a year she gained all the weight back due to binge eating. she weighed more than she did when she joined jyp so the company kicked her out and offered to let her back in if she lost the weight again.

daebyeol was only 13 but going through full on depression and binge eating disorder. she felt ugly and worthless after being torn apart, tried proving herself and still wasn't good enough. her parents tried to convince her otherwise but after over 2 years away from them and going through puberty, their words went through one ear and out the other. daebyeol had to watch wonder girls reach peak success with tell me and nobody and it ate away at her. she was happy for them of course since she knew them personally but felt like she was missing out.

it was after learning that hyuna signed with cube in 2008 did she realize that all hope wasn't lost. she debuted in wonder girls and left because of health problems but there she was at cube trying again so she too wanted to try again. daebyeol made up her mind and worked hard to lose all the weight she gained. she restricted her diet and exercised a lot to lose 17kg in a 40 days. she went from 64kg to 47kg. her parents were actually worried at how unhealthy she was being but she didn't let their concerns stop her. her dad convinced her mom to let her go back to jyp since she put so much work into losing weight so fast and jyp did accept her back.

training picked up right where it stopped for her, some of her friends were no longer there and she realized how lucky she was to get a second chance so she wouldn't give up so easily this time. though jyp staff didn't lighten up either. the happiness she felt in her first year of training never came back. she'd eat normally until a week before the monthly evaluations where she'd starve herself to be skinny. whenever she was down she'd binge eat to make herself feel better then felt disgusted with herself after so she'd purge by throwing it up or exercising to the point of near exhaustion. she was suffering both mentally and physically but hearing a good job at monthly evaluations gave her a dopamine release that made it all worth it. for the next year this was her life until in march 2010 she was once again a candidate to debut, this time in miss a.

daebyeol was close to debut, she was apart of the final lineup. she was training with the other three girls and they got along well. but a longtime trainee named min came from america and gave her a run for her money. it was between those two to see who would debut, both of them learned good girl bad girl and both practiced. min was skinnier than daebyeol so since she learend that skinnier meant prettier she only drank a small cart of soy milk a day to be "prettier" than her. in the end when they had to perform the song in front of staff min was chosen over daebyeol because her dancing was more energetic compared to daebyeol who was starving and on the verge of passing out from the soy milk diet.

this time daebyeol didn't leave. she felt terrible and defeated but refused to give up. she questioned what she was doing wrong but still trained regardless. she still binged and purged but mostly kept her weight between 42-44kg. she was a lot more frail looking but at least she no longer had to worry about her weight being a factor.

as time went by a new problem emerged, the trainees were getting younger and younger. she was only 19 but she was competing with 12 year olds that were insanely talented and it made her feel old. she was no longer in highschool so she put all her energy into training. jyp knew she was very talented and as such a longtime trainee he offered her a part time job to help the younger trainees with singing and become a songwriter since it was something she worked on for a long time while there. she felt honored that he recognized her talent and sat in as a staff member judging the monthly evaluations during the newer trainees evals but still had to participate herself. she finally felt seen and it made her feel like she might really have a chance this time.

when jyp called her into his office to talk about sixteen she thought she wanted her to be a contestant, but instead he wanted her to be one of the judges. he felt that she was there long enough and was experienced enough to know what makes an idol. in her head she wanted to say, "yeah anything but me" but refrained herself. since nayeon was only a year younger than her she asked why she wasn't a good fit for the show. jyp said a lot of disrespectful things to her but this one stung the most. he said, "your face just isn't refreshing enough." here she was an all-rounder and finally the ideal weight but she still wasn't good enough. funny enough she actually questioned getting plastic surgery or bleaching her skin to look more "refreshing" but even she understood that that wouldn't change his mind.

during sixteen she was a judge, she even wrote do it again for them and participated in the songwriting for a lot of their early songs. after working with the girls and seeing them work so hard she was happy for them when they debuted. around the same time sunmi rejoined wonder girls after years and daebyeol just had enough. right after twice debuted she left jyp because she finally accepted that she'd never debut.

not even a month after going back home, daebyeol felt drowsy often and learned that she developed type 2 diabetes from all the yo-yo dieting and her eating disorder. it took a while but she eventually recovered from her eating disorder with the help of her parents and doctors. she stayed away from the idol industry and went to college for music instead along with working as an assistant for her mom at her old school.

she never thought she'd step foot in the idol world again and she was actually fine with that. until she got a phone call from minguk saying that he had a job opening at the agency he was working at and instantly thought of her. she was hesitant but looked into the opportunity. she ended up getting along splendidly with hyojin and got the job as a singing instructor. for the first few months thats what she was, and a part time songwriter with minguk. during her lessons daebyeol gave a lot of wise words to the trainees and it was when she was sitting in on one of her classes did hyojin get the idea that she'd be an amazing leader for pandora.

daebyeol honestly thought she was insane because she thought that life was way out of reach. but she was better now, both physically and mentally and she knew she had to tell her story to the world as a sense of comfort, warning, and inspiration.
