LOVE STORY

and so our story starts at the beginning of the school year....

jungkook is smart enough to know it was a coincidence- of course it was a coincidence, this is real life! how come he can't stop thinking about her, though? on the first day of the first semester, he was minding his business, leaving the first class of the day- gen studies, how riveting- when his eyes had met hers. at that exact moment, a bell-like sound rang loudly in his ears. it was like time stopped- just himself with this girl, who had the saddest eyes jungkook had seen in a long time. her dark hair, her plump lips, the chain around her plaid skirt- he found that he took notice of everything. and then it was over. her head hung low and she continued on her way. jungkook, still in a slight daze, heard someone next to him answer and talk on the phone. oh, he thought. that's all it was. jungkook couldn't help but remember one of his favorite movies, kimi no na wa. he recalled what he said to himself after watching it, that if he heard bells when he saw a girl, he would take it as a sign that she is his soulmate. but this isn't a movie, he reminded himself. he gathered his bearings and continued on.

⛈ as the days went by, jungkook realized he saw this girl more and more. she minded her business playing games or listened to music, on her way to class or simply under a tree. always alone, he noted. every time he came across her that nagging voice appeared in his head, reminding him of the bells. jungkook grew to admire her from afar, often daydreamed about what she was like, what she was into, what her dreams were. unintentionally he had put her on a pedestal without even saying a word to her- until a few weeks later, when he finally gathered the courage to talk to her. jungkook convinced himself it wasn't because of the bells, he was just genuinely interested in her (but maybe it's also the bells). he spotted her under the tree, nintendo switch in her hand, and made his way over to her. "uh, hi." the boy said, fidgeting a bit. the girl continued to play, seemingly engrossed in her game, not paying him any mind. "um, hello?" jungkook coughed a bit, finally getting the girl's attention as she looked up. suna was surprised someone was actually trying to talk to her. this happens sometimes, but hardly ever lasts. she said nothing, just staring up at the tall boy from her spot on the ground. "can i sit here too?" he asked, subconsciously playing with his hands and looking everywhere but at her. when suna didn't answer, he took the initiative to sit down anyway. "i uh- i really likes games too. what are you playing?" no answer. suna thought he might go away, but he just pulled out some school work and started working.

⛈ suna later on found out his name was jeon jungkook. he introduced himself at their second encounter at the school's cafe. suna wasn't quite sure what to think about him. he's nice, but slightly pushy. eager, but respectful. he talked to her without expecting her to speak in return- it was almost kinda refreshing. he definitely was one of the most persistent people to ever try and befriend suna, that's for sure. for weeks suna still remained silent, not letting this strange boy chip away at her resolve. weeks turn to months, at which point suna (who i imagine has started to get closer to a few of the girls by this point) lamented to some of her dorm mates about how annoying her admirer was. some of them looked worried and even angry, suggesting she contact someone if he was being too bothersome. however, suna found that she didn't want to do that. deep down she had this feeling that jungkook was completely harmless. her thoughts drifted to their previous encounters, one time jungkook brang her favorite pastry as a gift, to him wiggling and dancing until suna took out an earbud so that jungkook could goof around with her, every time suna's eyes would roll when jungkook came up with a lame joke. she hated to admit it, but a part of her had gotten used to jungkook, even looked forward to when the shy boy (who was steadily becoming less shy every time they interact) would come running over with a dopey grin on his face.

⛈ one particular night, suna found herself following someone holding a canvas, curious as to what was painted on it. she found herself at the school's art exhibit, not quite remembering how she got there but enjoying the art nonetheless, so drawn in that she didn't notice the time. when suna finally left, it was nightfall. she stared agape on the steps for a minute before anxiety quickly crept in, her thoughts became mush as she started to move her feet. i don't know how to get to the dorms from here, oh my god- even with the street lamps it's so dark, where do i go? where am i? i know what happens to girls at night on college campuses, i'm gonna get hurt, i- "suna?" the young girl, who had tears streaming down her face, turned to look for the owner of the voice. "are you okay?" a sweaty and tired looking jungkook, adorned in his baseball uniform covered in dirt. she vaguely remembered him telling suna that he played baseball. he must've had practice, a surprisingly calm thing she thought to herself. despite her refusal to answer, jungkook seemed to put the pieces together and started leading her back to her dorm, speaking to her softly and trying to distract her by telling her a funny story from practice. "so then jonggyu and seungki both went for the ball and ended up crashing into each other- oh, here we are." the pair stood outside of suna's dorm, quiet for a moment before suna actually spoke. "don't tell anyone about this." she said, ignoring jungkook's stunned expression and entering her dorm. suna stood there, her back resting on the door, thinking about jungkook's smile and his kindness. for the first time, he made her heart race.

⛈ suna, filled with appreciation, was more open to jungkook after that night. she engaged in conversations with him, in a suna-like way of course, and the pair even hung out off campus often, especially to grab food. suna asked ahran about sports so she could talk about baseball with jungkook, she even showed up to some of his practices and games just to support him. he started meeting up with suna to walk her to classes, to the music club, wherever she needed to go. suna sent him a playlist of all her favorite classical music as a suna-way of saying thank you. sometimes at night she'd think about it all until 3 in the morning, how much her life had changed and how warm and happy suna felt these days. she remembered the night the school hosted a karaoke fundraiser for the baseball team, jungkook asked suna to come with him of course. suna denied the opportunity to sing, but she enjoyed her time there regardless, jungkook singing a cheesy k-pop love song to her had suna in near tears from giggling. suna decided that she trusted him. in the span of six months, jungkook steadily became the most important person in her life. the next day, she brought him to an empty classroom and started to sing. jungkook, already head over heels at that point, found himself falling deeper. of course she sings too. i'm not surprised, she's my soulmate. jungkook had joined in, singing a sweet melody.

⛈ the two started up their singing rendezvous, at his or her empty dorm, in classrooms, wherever. suna was delighted that jungkook sang with her so it became a very special time for her. after each singing sesh, suna confided to jungkook about her life growing up- her strict mother, lackluster childhood and her amazing little sister. she couldn't help but leave out her ex, that's just a wall that would probably never come down anytime soon. jungkook, meanwhile, found himself wondering why she doesn't show her talent off. she's one of the best singers he's heard, why is she keeping this a secret? her voice could be reaching millions by now on social media. maybe she just needs a little push? everyone will love her as much as i do. jungkook had good intentions, he really did. perhaps blinded by his admiration, he never stopped to consider how suna would feel when he secretly recorded her singing and posted it. my whole world. isn't she amazing? he captioned it, blissfully unaware. jungkook didn't have a huge following, but the majority of his followers were other yeong-ung students. the post didn't go viral but it was seen, and that's really all it took. suna had woken up the next morning by the talkative gently nudging her. "suna, have you seen this? you're so good!"

⛈ suna hadn't been blinded by rage many times in her life. in fact, it was probably the first time she recalled ever being this angry. suna knocked on jungkook's door and just seethed, even after he answered she stood there and quietly asked "how could you?" the smile fell right off of jungkook's face. what followed was an argument that tore each other apart, suna tearfully asking him how he could do something like this behind her back, jungkook defending himself by saying he was just trying to help. "what do you think this is jungkook, a star is born? the real world isn't a movie! we're not even a couple, and we never will be!" before going, suna painfully told him why she was so hurt by this, what started it all for her- dae seunggi. it felt like she ripped herself in half by even speaking about him but she wanted him to know just how betrayed she felt. and with that, it was over. suna had walked away and blocked jungkook on her phone, talking down jaewon who was ready to go give him a black eye at the sight of her teary face. he didn't even ask me to prom yet... suna sighed to herself, locked in her room for hours.

ENDING

jungkook feels absolutely gutted. he had no idea of her past, but he realizes even without that context it was still a ty thing for him to do, no matter the intentions. he just wants to apologize to her straight away, but his friends advise him to give her some time, which jungkook does despite how torturous it feels. on his way to class one morning, looking and feeling a mess, he spots a boy talking to suna and her acutally responding (he just wanted some notes from class) sends jungkook into a jealous fit, picking a fight with him after suna walks away because how dare he try and talk to my soulmate? needless to say, he goes back to the dorm with a black eye that night ("the other guy looks worse, trust me") feeling even more like an idiot. this whole situation made him realize that he loves suna- actually suna. he loves her chapped lips and grumpy mornings and the way she gets cheese all over her face when eating ramen. it may of started with melodic bells and an idealized dreamy version, but nothing compares to the real her. and so he has to fix this.

⛈ it's not any better on suna's end. a week goes by, prom steadily approaching, and jungkook's absence in her life leaves an ache in her heart. the girls try and convince her that he's trash, she can do better, but suna just can't buy it. yes she's still hurt by what he did, but being away from him just made her realize that she's in love with him. the very thing she was trying to deny these last few months has been true all along, and suna has no idea what to do about it. of course jungkook needs to be held accountable for what he's done but... can't they work it out? what does she even say to him? the urge to run over to his dorm every day is strong, but she holds herself back. the day before prom, suna is alone in the dorm making herself some breakfast to try and cheer herself up, when she hears a knock on the door. she doesn't realize that a sound that used to give her slight anxiety before, has no affect on her now. over the year her confidence has improved from making new friends that brought out the best in her. suna halts her cooking to answer the door.

⛈ the sight of jungkook with a faded black eye is not on suna's bingo card for the morning. "can i come in?" still stunned, suna just simply nods and steps back, closing the door behind them. jungkook speaks from his heart, taking accountability for his mistake, admitting he had an idealized version of suna in his head at first, essentially laying out all of the reasons he ed up and apologizing for them. some of his shyness returns as he begins to sing the chorus to one of his favorite songs that remind him of suna (be there by seafret). in tears, suna throws her arms around him and accepts his apology. both of them are teary messes but eventually gather themselves together to continue breakfast. suna looks over at jungkook while scrambling the eggs, "you know, if we were a movie, we'd be the cheesiest one... that was kind of corny." over an american style breakfast, jungkook asks suna to prom, and the young girl accepts with no hesitations. despite all of this, the two still don't actually say 'i love you' to each other just yet, and aren't official couple. i guess we'll just have to see in the story...
