as the only son of a ruthless high general of the fire nation and a long history of high generals in his family, chinxi had a lot of expectations on him. being cruel and cold hearted was in his blood, something that generations of men in his family were characterized by but chinxi just didn't have it in him to be like that. after seeing the gruesome truth of war and what the fire nation is truly doing he deserted the military and fled to a small village where he stayed with jeong jeong and chey. now that he's reached enlightenment he's happier than ever and living a peaceful life wandering the earth kingdom as a nonbender named houyan. but the fire nation is still looking for him, his father is far from giving up on finding is son.

– houyan 好人– the name that he goes by in the earth kingdom. its the cantonese pronounciation of hao ren in mandarin meaning nice guy. a child asked him his name while he was in a small earth kingdom village and he asked what he looks like his name is in return. houyan was her response and its the name he's been going by since.

Appearance: chinxi was once known as one of the most handsome men in the fire nation, his hair was mostly half up and half down allowing the rest to flow in the wind and girls to swoon over his looks. his features are masculine yet gentle making him somehow pretty but also manly. his jet black hair and equally dark eyes contrast his pale skin tone in a complimentary way. thick and straight eyebrows with a sharp jawline and full lips. he had a tall and fit body, more on the slim side until he left the fire nation and gained a few pounds. his jaw is still sharp but just cheeks are a bit fuller and he may or may not have a little chub on his stomach from all the good eating and tea. now he has a light beard and mustache that he doesn't bother to get rid of anymore. his hair remains long but instead is put in a messy bun with strands hanging out from the sides. and his skin is tanned from his days wandering in the hot sun.
Style: chinxi's style has changed drastically since he lelft the fire nation. coming from an upper class family he wore the finest hanfu's, shades of black and red embroided with dragon prints. his signature look when fighting included a black weimao hat because he couldn't stand to see his victims faces during war. fashion wasn't a top priority for him, instead he looked nice by default due to the high quality clothes they were able to afford. after deserting the fire nation his style is the polar opposite of what it used to be, wearing a series of wool cloths wrapped in a similar fashion to the silk hanfu's he used to wear. his clothes are baggy and a messily put together, usually slightly dirty from his nomadic lifestyle paired with some slippers. he keeps his things in a bamboo bag carried on his back. he actually carries no weapons with him because he doesn't want to be associated with violence at all. just yueqin incase he feels like breaking into song.

chinxi is a free spirited person, after leaving the fire nation and being exposed to many ways of life he's become very open minded. he's the kind of guy that can be friends with anyone, seeing other people happy makes him happy. knowing that he could've possibly made someones day with something he said or his actions is enough for him to be satisfied. he's able to stay optimistic and enthusiastic even in the hardest times. coming up with creative ways to get out of a certain situation. he somehow finds the humor in everything. he gets happy when people want to hear about his travels and loves learning new things, just being in a new place makes him excited.
he's the kind of person that wears his heart on his sleeve, he never wants to intentionally hurt someone and seeing others hurt is too much for a big heart like his. after reaching enlightenment he's become a light hearted person, before he used to be argumentative when he didn't agree with someone but now he just lets things go. he's learned to forgive his parents and let go of the past, its no longer a deep wound that he carries. he just wants the world to be at peace with each other. fighting in any way only causes him stress so he always ends up the mediator in situations.
the only issues that he has is he can be too selfless, he sacrafices himself for other people. people love that he's a friendly guy but any manipulative person can easily take advantage of him. his kind heart causes him to be naive and not realize when people have bad intentions. when he believes in something he believes it with all his heart so it takes a lot of convincing to change his mind. whenever people tell him what to do he questions their authority because theres nothing more that he hates than someone telling him what to do due to his dads old ways. his stubbornness causes him to be impulsive, he just wants to have fun and live a light hearted life so he would go towards whereever the fun is. he just has this need for adventure and doesn't like structure since thats all his life was back at the fire nation.
Background: chinxi is the son of high general bujing and xiaohuo who was apart of the domestic forces. bujing and xiaohuo both come from a long line of high generals, with chinxi showing exceptional talent in fire bending and swordsmanship from a young age he was expected to continue the family legacy. chinxi had the typical life of an upper class fire nation citizen, he went to the best schools and had the best training. besides his father being domineering his life was fairly easy, but the life his father constantly pushed on him wasn't the life that he wanted. something about it felt off. as his father boasted about the fire nation and his job, all he could think about was the other nations and the innocent people hurt in the process. his dad said it was the sacrifice that had to be made for the betterment of the nation. but it still seemed wrong.
at 16 his father forced him to join the military, there was a lot of expectation put on him because of his family history. chinxi was very talented, possibly a great asset to the army but instead of taking it seriously he lazed around and flirted with girls. during this stage in his life him and his father budded heads the most, if it wasn't for his mother breaking up their fights bujing might've pulled a ozai on him. his father found him ungrateful for not taking advantage of all the opportunities he's given him. chinxi was moved up to liutenant when he didn't deserve it and he couldn't care less. there were many opportunities for chinxi to be deployed, he was more than ready to fight for his country but avoided it at all costs. the only reason he was able to do this was his father but after seeing how he didn't take his opportunities seriously, his dad was tired of protecting him. chinxi was moved to the unit of captain chey who wasn't excited to have the stubborn lieutenant on his team but they soon realized that they have more in common than they thought.
for the first time chinxi got exposed to the true horrors that the fire nation was causing to hundreds of small villages all over the earth kingdom. he had an idea about what was happening but it was way worse than he ever thought. he tried confiding in the other soldiers and lieutenants but they all just ended up sounding like his father. chey was the only person that agreed with his concerns, they questioned how much good they were really doing. with chinxi's reasoning chey and him deserted the fire nation together and had to constantly move around due to the fire nation's constant pursuit of them, especially chinxi. after a while they found out about jeong jeong and joined his small camp in the northwestern earth kingdom. with jeong jeong's help chinxi learned to accept himself as he is and vowed never to fire bend again.
since then chinxi has been wandering parts of the earth kingdom alone enjoying the cultures of small villages and giving a helping hand to those in need. he made it his duty to spread as much happiness as he could in such a corrupt world. even if people don't know he's fire nation at least he feels satisfied that he's helping others instead of hurting them. he makes a living as an artist, doing free portraits and providing free art classes for anyone that wants to learn, mostly kids. he might decide to randomly help an elderly shop owner free of pay just to make her smile. he has never been happier in life, it was easier than he thought it leave his old life behind. but his parents are still dealing with the loss of their son and are determined to find him and bring him back home, even if its not what he wants. at the end of the day chinxi is bujing's son so he's not willing to give up so easily.

Likes:
• dancing – he discovered dancing while in the earth kingdom and fell in love with it. he can't dance well but finds it really fun. he's been to earth kingdom parties and girls find his weird dancing cute for some reason.
• roast duck – its one of his favorite food, at the fire nation they cut it in small pieces but in the earth kingdom they leave it whole. theres something about biting into a whole duck and making a mess that makes it even more delicious. the earth kingdom's special sauce is definitely better too.
• smoked sea slug – a nostalgic dish that he's been eating since he was a kid. he hasn't had it since he left the fire nation and sometimes he can't help but reminisce about the taste of the tentacles, his favorite part.
• parties – chinxi was one of the "most important kids in the fire nation" that people referred to back at ember island. he was the life of the party, talked to everyone and had his fair share of girls. even now he still finds himself at a few parties with girls on either side. he's just always down for a good time.
• alcohol – being a certified party boy chinxi was taking shots of sorghum liquor before he was even legal. despite having years of drinking experience he still gets tipsy fairly easily. but it takes him a while to get to the point where he can't control himself.
• tea – he's actually learned to appreciate tea and how the different kinds can affect your body or change your mood. he drinks tea almost every day. just sitting back and enjoying a nice hot cup of tea while enjoying the view is the most relaxing past time. lychee tea is his favorite.
• animals – he's sweet to any animal he comes across, he's the kind of guy to feed the rodents on the street.
Dislikes:
• bullies – he has always been the type to help the underdog. if he sees injustice being done then he'll step in and protect the other person. he doesn't like fighting but if it gets to that point then so be it. he would never fire bend though since he takes his vow very seriously.
• bugs – he still can't get used to all the damn bugs in the earth kingdom. he's a big baby when it comes to any insect.
• the fire nation – it's obvious why, his genuine dislike for his own nation is what makes him blend in so well with the earth kingdom who also has a deep hatred for them
Hobbies:
• painting – he gets his artistic abilities from his mom. it was just something he did as a hobby, girls in the fire nation would ask him for a portrait and he was nice enough to agree without realizing that was their way of flirting with him. now he paints beautiful things he sees on his journey, selling his art to merchants is his main source of income. he likes to find new art supplies on his journey too.
• gambling – back in the fire nation chinxi blew and won a lot of money on gambling. there's just a rush that comes with winning and it was a fun past time even though he barely won. some people fight over things like that but he never took it that seriously. he would sit there for hours betting and losing every damn time but the few times he won he was really happy although it was never enough to compensate for how much he lost.
• kuai ball – during the summers chinxi would go to ember island with his family and dominate the kuai ball court with his friends. his acrobatic abilities helped him to be really good at the game. he isn't competitive so he didn't mind losing but he barely lost as well.
• pai sho + cards – at least three times a week chinxi can be spotted playing pai sho or cards with the elders of the village while drinking some wine. he's actually really good at pai sho for some reason, when they bet money he'll probably spend it on buying everyone a drink instead.
Habits:
• he's a messy person and has a bad habit or running late since he's so disorganized
• unintentionally getting girls because he's really friendly
• laughing at everything when he's drunk
• whipping out his terrible dancing whenever he hears music, even if its randomly on the street

• he used to hate his name because chinxi means to invade or onslaught and he just found the meaning to be disgusting. but during his travels he learned that his name can also mean healing snake, he was known as one of the kindest dragons and spread medical knowledge so he can help people. knowing that gave him hope that maybe he truly isn't bad despite his family history.
• he feels way more relaxed now because there's no pressure to look perfect and neat all the time. he realized that earth kingdom girls like guys who are a little more rugged compared to fire nation girls.
• he hasn't had many girlfriends but he's had way too many flings to count. he takes relationships seriously so he wouldn't just date a girl he doesn't actually like. he has found himself falling for a few earth kingdom girls but could never commit because he can't stay in one place for too long. his longest relationship lasted a few months, almost a year and the only reason it ended was because he left the fire nation. many guys find themselves going to brothels but he doesn't have to because he somehow gets girls either way even when he isn't trying.
• his biggest fear is that the fire nation finds him again, its not something he's actively worried about but it subconscious
• he knows how to play the morin khuur but he hasn't played it in a long time. while on his travels he learned how to play a short song on the guzheng from an elderly shop owner. he has a yueqin that he carries with his everywhere. if he can't sleep then he'll stay up making a song

• his "story" is that his earth kingdom village was colonized by fire nation so now he's just a refugee wandering the earth kingdom. people usually don't ask much after that, just talk about their hatred for the fire nation in which he can't help but agree

• all his travels have made him kind of wise, he knows a lot about the many cultures of the earth kingdom
• he likes his freedom and doesn't like following rules, he questions them instead but he hasn't had a problem with that outside of the fire nation

• he can make a few earth kingdom dishes. on his travels he's met many people who invited him into their home so he can have a cozy place to stay and all of them have been nice and treated him like family. he tries to help around the house as much as he can since he is taking up space so he's learned to cook from helping out in the kitchen.

GENERAL BUJING / FATHER / 60 / FIRE NATION HIGH GENERAL / STRICT, COLD, AGGRESSIVE / FC: ANDY LAU chinxi's relationship with his father is very strained. usually people who are ruthless to the public come home and they're completely different but bujing ran his household like a dictator. chinxi and his father don't see eye to eye on anything. bujing sees his son as incompetent and blames xiaohuo for giving him a son who is such a disgrace to the family. bujing's hot temper and chinxi's stubborn ways has caused many fights between the two. while xiaohuo would hug chinxi if she ever saw him again, bujing would either have to kill him or throw him in jail with no mercy.
XIAOHUO / MOTHER / 50 / DOMESTIC FORCES / WARM, COMPLIANT, STRICT / FC: ZHOU XUN growing up with a bunch of brothers and parents who never once expressed their love, xiaohuo was lacking in the caring aspect of motherhood. she tried her best to understand chinxi, she was a lot more gentle than bujing but she agrees with bujing wanting chinxi to become a high general to keep the family tradition going. even though she knew he didn't want to be in the military she encouraged it because her parents were expecting that of her son. she knows chinxi has always been brave, its something she admires about him. she isn't half as brave as he is because her true dream is to be an art teacher at a school but she crumbled under the pressure and expectations of her family, nonetheless she's an amazing artist. the last time she heard from chinxi was the letter he sent a while before he deserted the fire nation. he expressed how hard it was and the terrible things he saw. he hoped that her reply would be something along the lines of i'll try to bring you home but instead she just said he's doing his duty by serving the nation and she's proud. deep down she knew when she wrote that that it wasn't what he wanted to hear and she can't help but blame herself for his disappearance. chinxi actually misses his mom from time to time, he wanted to go back to the fire nation to get her but he knows she would never have enough courage.
CHEY / MENTOR / 30 / EX FIRE NATION CAPTAIN / FC IDEAS: SONG SEUNG HOON, IKO UWAIS, HARRY SHUM JR, HENRY GOLDING, TAKESHI KANESHIRO chinxi considers chey a good friend, they got close while in battle and even closer when they traveled together after deserting the fire nation. to chey chinxi is like a clumsy younger brother, he's so full of life and kind that chey wants to protect him. chey doesn't agree with chinxi's decision to wander the earth kingdom on his own and thinks they should stay as a group instead. but he knows chinxi is stubborn so all he can do is hope that he stays safe.
JEONG JEONG / MENTOR / 60 / EX FIRE NATION ADMIRAL / FC IDEAS: ZHANG FENGYI, RYU SEUNG RYONG chinxi sees jeong jeong as very wise and someone he looks up to, similar to chey. he taught him fire bending when he was younger and jeong jeong remembers being impressed with his fire bending despite his young age. chinxi sees jeong jeong as someone that has his whole life together and seems enlightened even though he has a lot of internal struggles himself. if anything chinxi is more brave than jeong jeong for no longer living secluded and in hiding.
Firebending: chinxi's firebending skills is on a masters level. he's been fire bending from a young age and was forced to take it very seriously and got the best of the best to teach him, even learning from jeong jeong at one point in his life. his abilities excelled others his age and he was a force to reckon with. anyone with such power would boast about their abilities but he wasn't like that, he only fought when he had to and never truly found joy in the art of bending. he hasn't fire bended in a long time so he's not sure if he still harbors the same amount of power that he used to, especially since he's finally at peace and truly happy within.
Chang Quan: Any efficient warrior can't only rely on his or her bending as attacks. Hand to hand combat is just as important. As young as 6 years old chinxi was taught the art of chang quan while his father and grandfather and great grandfather all watched, anticipating the day when he would too take the ranks of a high general. chang quan also known as long fist emphasizes extension and a strong defense. after years of studying the craft chinxi can easily defend himself in a fight, constantly keeping his opponents at a distance and gracefully avoiding attacks with his hands behind his back. he lets the other person tire themselves out before he does a strong quick attack. his acrobatic abilities make for an impressive show as jumping from high grounds and flipping is all apart of the art.
Qin Na: for close combat like someone attacking him he could use qin na to defeat them quickly, a joint locking technique that he learned from his martial arts master. he doesn't like to use it though because it can be really painful so he rather keep ducking and weaving or using chang quan to defend himself. recently he only used it once against some guy that was being a jerk to a defenseless woman.
Swordsmanship: chinxi's preferred fighting weapon is his liuye dao sword. he learned some of his swordmanship from piandao. his already extended fighting technique allows him to be an amazing swordsman and avoid attacks. he no longer has his sword though. the closest thing to a fight that he recently had was a playful stick fight with a little earth kingdom kid.
Explosives: since he was close to chey while in the military he learned a few things about explosives. he's no expert but can make a basic bomb if he wants to and fireworks.
Herbalism + Foraging: being a nomad has forced chinxi to learn to be one with nature, he's in the beginning stage of learning herbalism and foraging. still trying to figure out which plants are safe by trial and error on himself. he once ingested a plant mistaking it was edible and he passed out for 2 hours then woke up and said well that wasn't it before nibbling on the plant next to it.
How do you feel about the war?
"all the war is doing is causing destruction to the lives of innocent people. people are losing their families and loved ones while the fire nation sits around thinking that they're doing something good. i know whats happening because i was apart of the problem, i'm not proud to admit it but at least i was able to get away from that brainwashed society. ...so basically i hate it.
Do you think it will end soon? Do you want it to?
"honestly no, the fire nation has always has been determined to get what they want and won't stop until they do. its one of the aspects that make them such a "great nation" apparently. i think the world would be a better place if everyone just lived peacefully amongst each other without one nation having to have more control over the others. the only people that don't want the war to end are the one's that are privledged and don't see what's really happening."

"i don't see how that can end well for anyone, unless they aren't a brainwashed idiot but i highly doubt that'll happen. the fire nation forces so much propoganda in your face it's almost impossible to tell the difference between pride in one's nation and just pure ignorance. but i hope they take their duty seriously and try to bring peace, not just from the one sided fire nation view either."
