Scriptwriting for cinema - a synopsis for a feature film

I'll start in the middle of things. There I was, after 7 weeks my scriptwriting course at the Spanish university ended. Of course, procrastinating till the last weekend, I started on Sunday evening. But as usual YouTube got in the way. 'Oh, just one more video won't hurt' and it ended up being 10 P.M. Sigh. 'Okay, I'll start now'. And that's how it went. I asked a friend if she wanted to read it everytime I was a little further down my story. It ended up being 1 P.M. when I was finally done with my synopsis, but hey I did it! The next day I printed it and on Tuesday, the day of the deadline, I delivered it to my professor's office. Now I have to wait till January to hear my final grade. Sigh. The torture. Ah well, I learned a lot, I loved the course and this is my final product. Don't you dare copying it! It's mine :)

Standing next to her parents at her brother’s grave, she feels the cold wind through her thin coat. Ji Eun and her parents had to bury her brother themselves, a few weeks ago, at a piece of land that wasn’t claimed by the leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The situation in North Korea had worsened over the past few months; there was a civil movement, the government got stricter and closed the borders completely. The rigorous winter took its toll on many people, including her brother. When Ji Eun and her parents get back to their small home, her father announces he had been talking to some people to plan their escape from North Korea. The knock on the door makes everybody look up and her father stands up to open the door. He invites the man into their small living room and explains that this man will help them escape. Ji Eun looks at the man and notices a small flag of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on the inside of his coat. Her mother asks her to get some fruit for their guest from the kitchen. Suddenly, Ji Eun hears people enter the living room, her mother screaming, the sound of a gun being loaded and her father yelling to her through the wall to get out. Ji Eun crawls through the small window and falls onto the cold ground on the other side. She hears 2 gunshots from inside the house that makes her whole body tremble in fear. When the front door opens she runs into a near alleyway and hides herself. She hears people run into the alleyway and one of them orders the others to find her and kill her. The whole night she keeps herself hidden in the alleyway while people keep running past within just meters from her.

When dawn arrives it quiets down and Ji Eun considers her options; these people will keep chasing her until they kill her. The only option is to escape to China in the North or South Korea in the South. Ji Eun decides to run to the next city and when it is still dark enough, she runs to the transportation center that is a few blocks away. Her father worked there and she had visited him there occasionally after school was over. The trucks always got loaded in the evening and would leave early in the morning to transport goods to other cities. Ji Eun climbs into the back of one of the trucks and to her luck finds the trucks is transporting fruit, of which she eats some right away. She doesn’t know how long she had waited when suddenly the drivers starts the truck and drives to another city.

When the truck slows down, Ji Eun takes some fruit, jumps out of the truck and realizes she is in a big city when she sees tall buildings surrounding her. The sun was shining bright in the cloudless sky, Ji Eun had fallen asleep in the truck after being on her guard all night. When she walks past a small bookstore, the newspaper catches her eye; The Pyongyang Times. The truck had brought her all the way to the capital, about 170 kilometers away from the border with South Korea. She takes the newspaper with her and walks along the busy streets. When she walks past an electronics store, she sees a picture of herself on the television that is standing in the window display. The news report states that she is the daughter of the leader of an underground, civil movement that wants to overthrow the government. The one who turns her in will receive a great reward, given personally by the leader of North Korea. The television shows a picture of her father, a secret passage in their home, people of the civil movement getting arrested and executed. Ji Eun was shocked, the symbol the saw on the people’s clothes confirmed the story was real. She had seen the symbol several times on her father’s clothes and when she asked what it meant, he said that in time she would find out. Now that she is so far away from home she thought she would be safe, but now even here she can’t trust anyone anymore with this message for everyone to see. Out of fear, she makes her way out of the city as quickly as she can and walks along a small country road towards the South Korean border.

With every car that she sees in the distance, she hides in the ditch next to the road, slowing her down in the progress. She twists her ankle and she sits down on a big rock next to the road to rest, watching the sun set on the horizon. Suddenly, she hears footsteps from behind her and out of the forest comes a young man in a military uniform. He stares at her and after a few seconds his eyes get big and he lifts his finger to point at her. Ji Eun gets up and starts to run, knowing the man recognizes her. He comes running after her and due to the lack of food and energy, she can’t outrun him. He catches up with her and pulls her arm, making her stop. Ji Eun starts hitting him, hoping she can break free. The man grips both of her arms firmly, making her stop and she looks up at him, frightened at what will happen next. For a few seconds he just holds her, then when a car approaches he pulls her behind a tree with him. When the car is gone, he introduces himself as Jaejoong and says he knows who she is, but also that he wants to help her. Ji Eun looks at him and doesn’t trust him. What if he is another spy like the man who said he would help her family escape, but ended up killing her parents? A person called Jaejoong from out of the forest and in a hurry he covers Ji Eun’s face in mud, gives her his coat to wear and tells her to keep quiet. An older man walks up to them and asks him who she is. Jaejoong answers he found her at the side of the road and that she had asked him for help. The older man tells Jaejoong to take her to the military base. Ji Eun doesn’t have another option than just to go with Jaejoong and trust him.

When they arrive at the military base, Jaejoong takes her to the infirmary and on their way there a lot of other soldiers give him friendly remarks. The infirmary is nearly empty and Jaejoong asks a nurse to take a look at Ji Eun’s ankle. While the nurse is bandaging her ankle, a soldier comes in and tells Jaejoong the leader of North Korea wants to talk to him. All the nurses and patients look up at the mentioning of his name. Jaejoong nods and walks out. When Ji Eun asks the nurse why the leader of North Korea wants to talk to a regular soldier like Jaejoong, she tells her that he is his nephew. The nurse offers to wash Ji Eun’s face, but she immediately reclines and asks where the bathroom is. On her way to the bathroom she comes across the dressing room and she quietly enters it. Ji Eun changes her into nurse’s clothes and sneaks her way out of the infirmary, to the hallway that leads to the exit. Then she bumps into Jaejoong and he asks her where she is going and why she is wearing nurse’s clothes. People pass by and Jaejoong takes her to an empty room to avoid any unwanted listening ears. Ji Eun tells him she knows he is the nephew of the leader of North Korea. He tells her he has seen the tragedy of people suffering under his uncle’s reign and wants to end this dictatorship. Jaejoong says he can provide South Korea all the inside information they need to overthrow the North Korean government. Ji Eun feels the honesty of his story and decides to trust him. Jaejoong convinces her to stay for the night so that they can run away early in the morning. He hides her in one of the storage rooms of the military base and promises her he will come back to her in the morning.

The next morning Jaejoong comes back, but he is not alone. With him are some soldiers who are smiling widely when they see Ji Eun. They tie her up and take her to the first sergeant of the military base. He congratulates Jaejoong with his catch, knowing Ji Eun is a fugitive, on the run for the government. Ji Eun feels betrayed by Jaejoong and fears the worst. The first sergeant calls the general who is the head of the military and advises the leader. When the general hears of this accomplishment he tells the leader, who requests for Jaejoong to bring the fugitive to him in Kaesong immediately. With 2 other soldiers, Jaejoong transports Ji Eun in a truck to Kaesong. While the 2 soldiers are sitting in the front of the truck, Jaejoong and Ji Eun are sitting in the back. Jaejoong writes a note and shows it to her, without the soldiers knowing. On the note it says that he is sorry, but that this was the only way he could get them near the border with South Korea. He had spoken with his uncle over the phone the other night, hearing he was in Kaesong. Jaejoong asks Ji Eun to trust him. When the truck stops to refuel, Jaejoong knocks out the 2 soldiers, unties Ji Euns handcuffs and drives down to a secret tunnel that leads to South Korean ground.

When they arrive they hear cars nearing and with gun shots being fired, Jaejoong and Ji Eun run through the tunnel to the other side of the border. A soldier shoots Jaejoong in the back and he stumbles over, into the arms of a South Korean soldier when everything goes black. He wakes up in a hospital bed and next to him is Ji Eun, she was waiting for him to wake up. When he tries to move his hands he notices he is handcuffed to the bed. Ji Eun smiles and tells him they made it, but that they know who he is and they have a lot of questions for him. He smiles back, they both know this is the start of a change for North Korea.

And here I am, writing my cliché, very first blog on Asianfanfics.com. And you know what? I think I like it already. The anonymity, the 'I-don't-care-what-I-write-cause-you-don't-know-me-anyway' attitude is something liberating. I could say whatever I want, without having to think about what the consequences are. For once, I don't have to face responsibility and it feels amazing!

Thank you... to whoever reads this or doesn't read it *takes a deep bow*.
