[my thoughts] Red Velvet's Wendy shows her impression of white and black people
i don't usually write a blogs about kpop artists until it's something related to super junior, but today when i read an article about how Red Velvet's Wendy received negative responses from many commenters for making white and black people's impression, i kind of felt disappointed and though about talking about it.
to sum things up, i am kind of disappointed.
one reason is because, very recently i transferred to a new university which despite to it's popularity and high rank, is located in a very poor and ghetto area of the California. as a result of this, everyday that i take the bus to my school, i encounter gang-like, homeless and drug-addict people; however, that does not mean that just because they are living in such a situation, i should stereotype them as a black men because this would create a false and negative image upon an ethnic and race group. in fact, many of the people who i have seen are not necessarily men or even black!
This scandal very upsets me because she used to be my bias in the group. i somehow thought that because she has lived outside of korea and traveled to many countries, she would be an open-minded international artists, but from what i have seen from a so far, she does not have a mature mind set. i totally understand that she is new to this career and in terms of age very young, but she is an idol for the god's sake. so it's not a good excuse for her lack of thoughtfulness. when kpop is growing so much in the world, their idols might as well have to be a lot more conscious of the type of jokes they throw out randomly, or else it would become extremely difficult for them to make it big. unfortunately when it comes to this type of countroversary, the audience would easily forgive and forget. up to this day, taeyeon of SNSD still gets attack for a racist remark toward Alicia Keys by stating, "For a black person, she’s really pretty."
I hate to generalize, but is it me who feels like YG artists are a lot more mature and open minded than the rest of the kpop? i mean seriously, just a while ago taeyand from Big Bang commented about how he likes to make MVs that are very diverse because it gives him the feeling of peace; and then, right after that i read an article about a so called "international" SM artists calling a blank man "gang". when i encounter these moments in kpop, i think to myself "what the hell is going on?" I don't know maybe it's just my mood that's kind of down right now...but i really expected a lot more from Red Velvet, especially since they debuted not a long ago.
