Self publishing is a risky business and usually ends up a fail.
I think there's a discussion forum on the net discussing this. Most will tell you that while self-publishing gets your name out, it doesn't always mean success. Mostly because you don't have the tools like publishers do to make it a success.
One thing that concerns me about self-publishing story is its origin from fanfiction. Now what I know is that fanfiction author is generally not accepted in writing community due to lack of credibility, originality, and breach copyright (sort of, and depends on type of fanfiction). Also publishers prefer to publish someone unknown to the net than having someone that already publish the story. What happens in Harry Potter community is that now most writers who wants to gets their name published decides to delete any trace of them on the net.
I think a good example of self publish story that goes right and wrong is 50 shades of grey by E.L. James. She manages to get it popular and earn lots of money, but she got ridiculed, slamed, critized, and has little credibility in the writing community.

1. I prefer not to, which I'll elaborate on #3~4. ;)

2. I would support your Swan Maiden.^^ But then I think it would need a bit of revisions because fan fics usually are driven by the relationships of the characters as we see in idols, so you're going to have to build up the story from scratch rather than relying on the fact that it's this idol plus this idol equals this relationship. (Did that make sense?)

3. Advantages to self-publishing: you don't have the kinds of deadlines that companies set on their authors since you're basically self-employed. You pretty much have free reign with all the parts of the book and you can publish when you want.

4. Disadvantages of self-publishing: you don't have the same kind of promotion that a company can give. Likelihood of your book hitting a beautiful spot on the shelf of the local bookstore is close to null. There is a sort of start-up cost (where you have to pay to get your books published and all that stuff). And in a country where the foreign things are more widely consumed by the market just like where I am, the advantages that a publishing house offers more protection for the author as well. I think. And there's more "foot traffic" with the amount of people that will see your books. Plus, publishing houses style publishing can offer many forms of the book and many more modes through which the consumer will be able to access it.

5. I would really prefer a publishing house. 'Cause if you're with a publishing house, getting your book "exported" will be easier, the existence of "tours" and other perks exist. Like working with other authors from the company to produce anthologies. I think it's really a lot like the idol world. Think of the perks SM artists receive vs. lesser known companies. Not exactly the prettiest picture, but it's probably the most realistic to a degree. :/

BTW is the Korean version of Fated to Love You what you're watching?
