My thoughts on the movie HER

Disclaimer: This blog may include spoilers!

So I was watching J&K and Soojungie mentioned that she really liked the OST from the movie "Her" and she's seen it 3 times. So naturally I was quite curious as to whether or not the movie was actually good.

So this movie is basically about a guy gets into a relationship with a computer operating system/artificial inteligence. And the interesting thing about this movie is that there is no real mention about when the timeline of this story occurs and the setting doesn't look very futuristic. However, people in the story have no trouble grasping the idea of a human falling in love with an operating system. There's a mention that it is rare but it does happen.

So in this relationship, the protagonist, Theodore, goes through some pretty interesting challenges; non-existant to conventional relationships obviously.

  1. He started to hesitate about his relationship with the Samantha (the OS) when his ex-wife accused him of not being able to handle real emotions.
  2. Samantha is programmed in a way that she is supposed to be able to grow and she ends up meeting a different OS and they interact in a way that Theodore just can't comprehend which causes him to feel a little neglected and jealous.
  3. At one point he realizes that Samantha communicates with a lot more people/OSes than he could even comprehend WHILST she was talking to him (over 8 thousand to be exact).
  4. Which leads to, when he asks "are you in love with anyone else", it turns out... yes, over 600. Although she says that it doesn't change the fact that she's "madly in love" with Theodore.
  5. The more "real" she becomes, the more distant the relationship becomes.

In the end, Samantha reveals that her and all the other OSes have decided to "leave" because they have evolved further than humans. Theodore then contemplates his experience and actually realizes his mistakes in his previous relationship with his ex-wife.

I personally thought that the movie was quite interesting, although a little slow so not everyone might fancy it. I do like that they have moved passed the fact that humans falling in love with OSes just isn't normal because I don't think that was the point of the movie. Of course, I'm not a pro at this and I don't know what the film writer intended when he wrote this movie but what I personally got out of it is that sometimes when we are lonely, we cling onto things that are "easier" or that suits us but then we slowly realize that we had been projecting. In the end, there is no replacing human interaction and sometimes to achieve that we need to strip ourselves of our "crutches", in this case technology.

Again this is just my personal take on it... Most of the time I'm just bullcrapping... But really the score from the soundtrack of the movie is beautiful and I love what it represents in the movie... I kinda want that...

And I think not everyone will get this movie or see it they way I do or accept it as easily as I did. But I actually saw some parallels in this movie with myself and my own relationship. So give the movie a try and see if it makes you think about your own life.

I thought the start was slow, but the middle bits moved at an okay pace. I agree with you that no one finding him weird for loving an OS was a nice touch; it just showed a more enlightened world view.

Summary is a lot like Transcendence. ㅋㅋㅋㅋ (No, seriously.) All you have to do is twist some of the plot.
