can someone please explain

what are "apply fics" with like new girl groups/boy groups and how do they work?

like, all of them are really well put together.

i see them all around aff and i'm confused on the following

  • is this like a roleplay or something? 
  • do you make characters for the author to use? 
  • how do these work?

 

could someone please explain these to me before i cry.

It is not a role-play, since you do not directly interact with the other characters.
An applyfic has the word "apply" in it, because they allow readers to apply for a character position. Readers submit application forms and then the author picks the applications that works best with her plot. Btw, they provide the form or the questions and give you directions on how to submit them.
So basically, if you get accepted, you see your character in the story. The author may or may not ask the accepted applicants further questions. So you just revert back to being a reader, from being an active participant.

it's like, you apply to be part of the story with your made up character-
and if your character is well-made and gets accepted, the author will write the story around the accepted applicants and their love interests.
