Listening to Silence: A SeoKyu Drabble

The wind was particularly strong on that warm summer afternoon, as it rustled the emerald leaves on the trees and blew the green grass like a tough force, sending the blades rippling in waves. Everything was in movement, yet it was silent. Rarely were there people who truly enjoyed this peaceful tranquility.

Kyuhyun ran a hand through his hair, causing it to become even more disheveled and wild. His eyes surveyed the area for a few moments, and then he spotted brown, wavy locks. She was sitting under a broken tree, scribbling furiously in a notebook, as if her life depended on it. He sauntered over to her and loomed over her, blocking the sunlight.

“Kyuhyun, I can’t see what I’m writing,” Seohyun said, implying for him to move.

He apologized and sat down next to her. “You left your own birthday party.”

“I appreciate what everyone did, but it’s not really my kind of thing,” she mused, glancing at her companion for a few seconds before going back to writing.

“Too noisy and chaotic for you?” Kyuhyun guessed, though it wasn’t really a guess.

He knew her.

Seohyun just nodded her head a bit.

“So what are you writing?” Kyuhyun questioned, trying to get a glimpse of her notebook.

“Goals,” Seohyun answered with a satisfied smile.

The man next to her simply raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “That’s interesting.”

“For the future, you know,” Seohyun told him, “I like to plan things ahead of time so there are no surprises.”

“You don’t like surprises?” Kyuhyun frowned.

“I guess it all depends,” the wiser of the two responded, ending the conversation.

Kyuhyun leaned against the tree, relishing the cool, fresh air on his face. The grass underneath him prickled his skin and he listened closely to his environment--a bird, or maybe two? Perhaps if he listened very closely, he’d hear the tiny sound of Seohyun’s pencil scratching on the paper. He willed his eyes to close and he felt at peace for once. Being Cho Kyuhyun meant no time for experiencing relaxation; this was new to him.

“Are you sleeping?”

Kyuhyun’s eyelids flew open when Seohyun’s voice registered in his ears. She waved a hand over his face and was pouting naturally.

He chuckled, “Nah, I don’t usually fall asleep that easily.”

“Oh,” Seohyun’s eyes suddenly lit up, like she got a brilliant idea.

“What?”

“You should write down your goals too.” Seohyun flipped to a clean, white page and pushed the notebook into his hands.

“Me?” Kyuhyun blinked.

“Yes, you,” Seohyun laughed, handing him her pencil. “Here.”

“I don’t really know...” Kyuhyun mumbled, staring at the blank piece of paper; if he stared long enough, would words magically appear on the page?

“You have to have at least one goal!” the brunette argued.

Seohyun turned herself so was no longer next to Kyuhyun, but rather, facing him. She folded her legs Indian-style and stared expectantly at him, urging him in her mind to write. Kyuhyun let out a sigh and gripped the pencil more tightly, hoping it would help him think up some ideas. He was drawing a huge blank; he didn’t want to disappoint her, he really didn't. His mind then traveled to Seohyun. She differed from her unnies greatly, in so, so many ways.

Mentally, Kyuhyun began making a list.

Seohyun was incredibly wise and well-rounded. She was the one to give advice to the other girls sometimes, despite her age. She was also an honors student and challenged herself in her studies. Seohyun worked hard in everything she did, not allowing herself to fall even a little short of above average. She remembered where she was from, so the stardom never went to her head. Seohyun was polite and well-mannered--so different from someone like Yoona, who would greet him with a few punches. She was a ladylike person, exuding total finesse and beauty. Without a doubt, Seohyun was one of the most feminine members. Lastly, Seohyun stood up for what she believed in. She was strong, and fought for what she believed was right--some called this tenacity, but Kyuhyun called it a passionate fire that would never die. Her honesty could sometimes be stinging, but that’s what honesty was about, the absolute truth.

Kyuhyun realized how lengthy this list was, and what it signified. He really liked Seohyun a lot. Even though Jessica and Yoona were his closest female friends from the nine-member girl group, Seohyun was something else altogether. It made her special.

Then it hit him.

“You’ve got something?” Seohyun asked, smiling.

“Yeah, I think so.” Kyuhyun beamed.

“Let’s hear it,” Seohyun said encouragingly, eyes twinkling.

Kyuhyun sighed, “It’s not really a goal though, since I’ve already achieved it.”

“That’s great, what is it?” Seohyun persisted.

“I want to find my perfect girl, my other half.”

“And you’ve found her?”

“I’m sure of it,” Kyuhyun said confidently.

Silence enveloped the two; Kyuhyun turned away from Seohyun, who was still trying to make meaning of his words. A full five minutes of nothingness passed, and Seohyun finally spoke up.

“Thanks for telling me,” she smiled.

“I think I might have to wait a while for her,” he leaned against the dilapidated tree again and stared at the light blue sky above him, “But I know it’ll be worth it; I’d wait even a thousand hours for her.”

“You won’t have to wait long, Kyuhyun.” Seohyun assured, resting her back on the tree as well.

“Really?”

“Really.”

The clouds began parting, making way for the sun’s radiance. The wind ceased its madness and everything was calm and quiet, while the youngest ones sat in hushed silence, each contemplating the same thing, but not knowing it.

And that was exactly where they were supposed to be, sitting together under the summer sun in the cool breeze, both perfectly content.

This is yellow because I copy and pasted from my livejournal. Enjoy! :D
