How To Be A Writer (for dummies)

This blog post just came out of nowhere. I am bored, the temperature is 38 degrees Celsius, and I have just finished updating some of my fics. So here I am, Jungreum at your service, to take up another space on your computer screens. I present to you a rundown on the ways how you can be the best. Fanfic. Writer. Ever. (Kidding.)

*cue Looney Tunes theme*

Warning. This blog post just came from the imagination of a weird and lame fangirl. Reader discretion is advised.

(Now for the feature presentation....)

1. Learn proper grammar. The number one rule that everyone should follow. Learning the proper grammar is the very first step on how you can be a good fanfic writer. Why? It's because people read your story/ies. And grammar is very important if you want to get your message across. Learn the basics: pronouns, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, so on and so forth. Learn the proper sentence construction, so that readers can easily grasp what you intend to say. Though I'm not a native English speaker, and I'm not that proud of my own English skills, I'm trying, at least, to make sure that everything I write would pass the standards of MS Word's Spell Check. Since my fics are in English, I literally put in blood and sweat in everything I write. Yu ken do it too.

2. Be original. The fanfic world is full of reused, reduced, and recycled ideas and storylines. And I must say, trying to build an original storyline is very difficult. So, let us learn from Mr. Laurence J. Peter with his quote "Originality is the fine art of remembering what you hear but forgetting where you heard it". It's okay to use the most famous plots: rich girl-poor boy, vampire-mortal, teacher-student, boss-employee, among many others. But at least try to come up with some unique add-ons to those storylines. Let's say: alien-slash-superhero-slash-lawyer-slash-doctor-guy meets predator-slash-werewolf-slash-secret agent-slash-superstar-girl.

3. Learn how to accept criticism. Srsly. Criticism, especially if taken as constructive, can help one hone his/her skills and talents. Especially in writing. Readers are the greatest critics. They'll know what's good, what's bad, and what's great. Unless your reader is your childhood archenemy, you can trust them everytime.

4. Read. I know, I know. Some of you might not enjoy reading, especially if you are required to read for a book report. But did you know that good writers are also good readers? And that 90% of a smart person's entire life was built on reading? And did you know that I only made up that percentage? Reading gives you three benefits, just like a multivitamin pill: it enhances your vocabulary, it widens your imagination, and it makes your parents think that you're actually studying.

5. Be committed to write. You know what's "writer's block"? It is when a writer runs out of ideas or loses interest in writing. And that is much more evil than any other superhero villain. Writing requires one to be committed and hardworking. If you can't stand an hour of writing, then writing is not for you. Maybe you should try being a singer. Or an artist. Or a secret agent.

I was thinking of adding numbers 6 to 10 here. But I really need to eat now and I'm starting to feel lazy. I hope these tips somehow helped you. Because I'm serious about this post. Honest.

TTFN.

Thank you for the advice. Actually I am also what you say a crappy "writer" because I have a really bad grammar but I'll try to read ( books) to enhance my vocabulary. (It's a shocking that I like writing stories but in reality I hate reading REAL books.)
