A rural story

130611115125-girls-education-intro-horizThe Acharya family owned a small house connected to a farm in the Chikale village of the Raigad district in Maharashtra. The family consisted of four people : Rajesh Acharya, his wife Rukmani Acharya, his elder son Raju Acharya and his younger daugher Rita Acharya. Rajesh used to work in the farm from 7 am to 7 pm  everyday. Rukmani was a house wife and looked after house chores and kids. Raju was a school student and Rita stayed at home with her mother and helped her. The family was poor and with only one person earning in the house it was difficult to send both the kids to school. The parents decided that Raju would be sent to school while Rita will stay home. Rita was more intelligent and hard working then Raju. But the parents being uneducated and also the backward thinking of the rural people, their son was prefered over their daughter. Raju was given all the facilities a kid should receive from their parents. While Rita was deprived of many facilities. Raju knew that Rita was more intelligent than him and would always make her do his homework. Rita would never complaint as that was the only time she could study. She always wanted to go to school with her brother but was refused by her parents everytime she asked. But one day she met someone that could help her go to school.

' The Teach One, Teach All ' was a Mumbai based NGO. Their motif was to educate as many underpriveleged kids as possible. Every month they use to visit a remote village in Maharashtra and spread the importance of education in the village. They have been succesful 80% of the time. Their next stop was the Chikale village. On their way to the village Shanti one of the workers in the NGO had a weird feeling about the village. She thought that there is someone out there in the village with whom she would have a special bonding. This really irritated her as she didn't know how to deal with these feelings. They soon reached the village and visited the houses. The workers devided themselves into groups to visit the houses. Shanti went to the east side of the village and visited Rita's house first.

As Shanti entered the house she could see Rita and her mother doing some house hold work. Rukmani invited her inside and made her sit on a stool as they didn't have money to buy furniture. Shanti explained them why she was there and talked with Rita as well. Shanti was impressed with Rita's knowledge even though she didn't attend school. Shanti pleaded Rukmani to send Rita to their one month education programme. With much convincing from Shanti, Rukmani finally agreed.

From next day Rita started attending the education programme by the Teach One, Teach All organisation. Shanti could see that Rita was a cheerful and intelligent girl with many dreams in her eyes. Shanti always helped Rita with her problems and studies. Shanti and Rita developed a bond and were more like sisters rather than teacher-student relation. Soon it was the end of the month and time for the NGO workers to leave. Shanti didn't want to leave Rita as she was the only one whose parents were not convinced to send her to the local school regularly.

Shanti talked with her parents many times but they always gave the excuse of being poor. At her finaly day Shanti visited the Acharya household with a plan. She offered to sponsor Rita's education on her. Rita's parents finally agreed and with Shanti's help Rita started going to school with her brother.

Today it has been 5 years since Shanti had started to sponsor Rita's education. Rita was very bright in her studies and has cleared her 10th standard exam with distinction. She wishes to apply in city colleges. She wants to be close to her Shanti 'didi'.

With Shanti's determination and Rita's hard work they have manged to inspire many girls in the villages to educate themselves and live a good life.
