9: Rants about AFF

Actually, I've been wanting to make a post about this since the day I realized that I've been pretty ignorant about how AFF works, but never really got the chance to do so (Or maybe I'm just too lazy...).

Anyway, there's not much and the list will mostly be just about petty things (LOL) but I just really want to let it out. It kind of piled up inside me already so... yeah lol

Disclaimer: By posting this blog entry, I am NOT saying nor implying that I am a better writer/reader/user of AFF. I'm also NOT pertaining to any particular fanfic. All of the things that I will be listing here will be in general.

So, let's start:

1. ____ / ~~~~ as the OC's names.

I've had plenty of times where I'll find a good fanfic with a good plot and a good setting (and it's just darn interesting) but then I'll end up not subscribing to it since the OC's name is 'underline' or 'tilde'. I may seem so picky right now, but honestly, I get really distracted because of it.

Like for example: "____!" Luhan called.

Whenever I read it, it's like: "Underline!" Luhan called.

I'm sorry but, ____/~~~~ is just a big NONO for me. I mean, is it so hard to pick a name for a character? OTL

the 'your username' function of AFF also applies to this.

I like my username, but I don't really think it'll be pretty if it goes like this:

"pakwanii..." Luhan whispered. "I love you, pakwanii."

Nuh-uh. Never gonna work.

2. American names for OC

I don't hate it, really. I just feel kind of iffy about it. Nonetheless, if the story's really good, I still read it.

3. Mary Sues

A rich, kind, smart, cute, but y girl ain't real. NOBODY'S PERFECT, OKAY? IMPERFECT IS PERFECT.

4. Character's trait description

Don't bash me because of this. I know that I also used to do this in my past fanfics before (Oh God, the shame) but now that I realized it, IT'S TOTALLY WRONG. I mean, I read a story so I could visualize the characters in my mind. About how they are, or how they act.

But for example, if you list your character as a strong willed girl, but the plot of the ff is how the girl hurts herself from depression, then that just ruins the whole story. You get what I mean, right? OTL

5. Script Writing

OMFG, NO. JUST NO. A fanfic is NOT  a play, a drama, or anything. Even if you have to repeat 'she/he said' for a million of times (just kidding), THEN DO IT. USE YOUR IMAGINATION AND MAKE YOUR READERS DO THE SAME.

6. Chain posts

Okay, whatever you do, I ain't going to participate in any kind of Chain posts. Hate me all you want, but me does not care.

7. Advertisement

Well, I'm ambivalent about this. I'm fine with users who advertise their stories, AS LONG AS THEY DON'T DO IT ON MY PROFILE OR ANY OF MY STORIES.

Right now, I couldn't think of anything more. I'll just add more if I think of it lolol Ciao~

I hate all those points too.
I mean, naming your main girl as "~~~~~~"? That's a total turn off.

I agree omg like in all of them lol xD

It's like "Hey ______! How are you?" I read it as 'blank' or 'line' or 'underscoreeeee' so..... =.=; I never put my own name in there for some reason..

omg the your username thing. omg. I don't want to read my username every time I read the character's name.. :/

But yeah, I think I prefer korean names over american

I agree with most of what you said--actually all of it. XD It doesn't annoy me too much, but it distracts from my reading, and I usually am good at visualizing things when reading so this affects me even more. I've yet to read a script story though.

And the misuse and repetition of verbs. That's my pet peeve. I don't mean any of your stories, Jaera--you're doing it right so don't worry haha. I've seen some stories where the author uses "statement here," she *snapped* where "she said" would have been perfectly just fine. And they use this same "snapped" word for EVERY OTHER dialogue sentence. Sighs. The character isn't even angry so why use it?

Can't agree more hahaha! I laughed so hard at this: "pakwanii..." Luhan whispered. "I love you, pakwanii." It sounds ridiculous somehow LOL

Me too. Totally agrees with everything you've rant. The underline and username thing is just so annoying. Even if the plot is good, I don't care. If I saw that, I went right out. I don't feel anything about reading a story with the character not having a name. Is it that hard just to pick a name for the OC?

Totally agree with you! Specially the if it is a 'YOU' fic but the main character is a Mary Sue.. meh~ it's not my style and i cant relate to her perfectness XD

Woah. Most of the things i agree with you. Ohh, i love you ^^
I agree abt the underline for OCs. Its so distracting.
I agree about using username for the OC lol, its so weird and....it makes me uncomfortable T^T and sometimes i think poor those ppl who has long usernames..
And american names are fine...but i prefer korean names ^^
About the character traits also ohmygosh so true T^T i usually dont read it.. haha, well, i know some parts might be important but..i usually just skip it... :/
And lastly, oh yeah! Chain posts . I hate it so much. It creeps me but , i dont bother tho...but still when i get it , its so frustrating..
Hehe, sorry for the long comment. I just wanted to let out my opinion :D and thx for sharing this also.. ^^ very cool of you :D

Totally agree^^ I also hate seeing OC's name "____"

OMG. HIVE FIVE.
I totally agree with all of the above XD

The situation does depend for the American name thingy tho the OC could be American or the story setting is in the future/alternate universe...blah blah etc.,

And my dear lord. The _______/~~~~~~ totally irks me too. I mean... Is it really that hard to find a name? A lame one would do. You don't have to overthink your characters' names by making it super meaningful if five languages and make it symbolize right different traits the character had... But please give it a name.

Another thing is when the overuse and abuse of Korean words. Using "Oppa" is fine and all, but honestly? Take a trip to Korea and you'll figure that girls don't exactly talk to their real brothers or boyfriends using the word 'Oppa' five times in the same damn sentence. And choose a language to write a sentence in and continueeeee. Adding in a phrase or two or something that's suppose to be a foreign nickname is nice and all but please don't make anyone speak in five different languages (using romanization, too) in the same freaking sentence.

"Oppa, very mianhae but eotteokae? Aigoo, fine. Let's kaja."

I don't know if that sentence irks you. It bothers me, a lot."

Now my next point isn't just a plain opinion like the above but mainly a problem of personal preference.

Please don't use super hard-to-read fonts like the cursive writing and then adding italics to the cursive writing. That really doesn't work. Especially when you pair it with neon green.

End//

**note: I do not mean anyone in particular and, yes, I sound quite rude but it's only an opinion - MY opinion.

Me too! I would rather the OC has a name :)
