(00) a short horror story - another

He was frightened, terror in his eyes when I would close the lights. I’d chuckle and ruffle his hair, telling him that there were no such things as monsters and would often hold a spray bottle with water inside, but I would label it as “Monster Repel” because I knew he loved Pokémon and that it would calm him.

I came home late at night that day, sighing as I entered the apartment that he and I shared. Once I walked into the lonely excuse of a living room, I noticed something different. He wasn’t in the living room, watching television or reading books. The living room was, in fact, dark. No light to be seen.

I began to worry, my palms sweating as I locked the front door and speed walked to his room. His room was located next to mine; he would often run and sleep next to me at the of midnight. My sweaty hand was now on the knob of his room. I hesitate, but reluctantly open the door.

There he was – smiling at me – with a book on his hands. I sigh in relief; it was rare to see him in his room alone. He had a lamp next to him that was lit. I bent down to kiss his forehead goodnight. As I turn to walk away, I feel him tug on my shirt. I look back and he looked at me in the eye.

“Daddy,” he said, “Could you check under my bed for monsters?”

Again, I chuckle, and bent down. I realize I don’t have the “Monster Repel”, but I wanted to get this over with. He watches me with his head tilted. Entertaining him, I bent my head down and took a peek under the bed and there was another him.

He looked frightened as he said, “Daddy, there’s someone on my bed.”
