my thoughts on exo's second is2 performance

not going to lie, but it wasn't as good as the first. baekchen nailed it, kyungsoo did okay (i think he was pretty nervous, so i'll be slightly lenient on him), and minseok did well at singing, but still, i rather listen to baekchen singing than the latter two. i like minseok's singing voice, don't get me wrong i do, but when you have baekchen nailing the song and just all around doing well, it's kind of hard to compare. kyungsoo was fine, but i also felt that his performance was a bit lackluster compared to baekchen. not saying kyungsoo was terrible here, but i'm hoping he takes what he can from this performance and improve for next time. minseok may have done well, but i think he was washed out a bit by being in the dancer line (that i felt was out of place, especially if they were supposed to be used as back up dancers, because i just wanted to push all of them into the back behind the main vocals instead.)

dancer line did not do it for me. yixing and minseok did well, because they are suave and fluid and just dance well all around. sehun did pretty well too and i was quite impressed by his dancing. kai on the other hand, i just wanted to push off the stage because he literally ruined the whole thing for me. harsh, but true. this song was supposed to be a smooth, easy listening, easy on the ears type song that can easily be put on repeat because of how smooth sounding it was, even with the eighties sound it had, and kai dancing as he was just made me cringe. kai may be a powerful dancer that is supposed to be good at conveying emotion, but i shouldn't have to witness kai dancing like a robot for this song. every move he made was too harsh, was too exact, for this dance, was not suave or smooth at all, and didn't really fit this song.

(i'm sorry, but when kai's supposed to be the best dancer in exo (which is totally offbase in my opinion), he should at least know when to be more smooth and less robotic as was shown. it's been over a year and even if kai has his own style of dance, he should have realized what type of song they were going to do and go off that, instead of trying to use his style (that really only works in like two types of songs, upbeat dance/dubstep/powerful songs), he should have shown us how smooth he could be. it's quite a let down to see him dance, because it seems like he's literally going nowhere and not improving his skills at all. it's like he's complacent and being complacent within a year is not good. while yixing and minseok seem to get better and better with every performance (even though minseok seemed a bit nervous in this performance, probably nervous about his singing part to be honest, minseok still did better than kai). even jongdae who didn't have much skill in dance last year has improved tremendously within the year... not going to lie, but if jongdae had even a fraction of dancer's blood in his body, he would easily surpass kai (sehun probably only needs a couple more performances to do that). jongdae has drive and you can see that he's improving and taking everything in to be the best performer he can be. jongdae may have a long way to go, but if he keeps up with what he's doing, jongdae may possibly be a k-pop legend.

and to see kai not improve at all and continue to do the same type of dance kind of kills me, like seriously, it's been a year... a year ago, i could have easily said that kai was the best dancer in exo (i mean he had a billion teasers showing off his skills), but now, he's not. he's not improving, he's not being innovative, he's not doing anything to show what he's learned. he's literally at a standstill and it stinks. because now, i can clearly say that yixing and minseok are the best dancers of exo, even if minseok doesn't get a lot of chances to shine (but when you know he's good friends with dongwoo and n, both of whom are dancers, and just seems to be able to dance well for most things, as well as, being able to put his own flair on things, i'm pretty sure minseok could easily give kai a run for his money). kai could easily be it, could easily be the best dancer, but when one happens to do the same dance for every single song they do (he even does the same dance for slow songs, that kills me even more), he literally falls short to everyone else. one can be good at one thing, but when you have those couple of people that aren't satisfied, that aren't complacent, that are willing to go out there and try new things, that are innovative, it's only a matter of time until they outshine those that may have been shining so brightly at first but can't seem to shine anymore. yixing has improved so much within a year and is still improving, showing what he's been doing, been practicing, and being able to see him go from being a good dancer to being the best (in my opinion) in exo, it says something.

if kai doesn't realize his shortcomings, it's only a matter of time until sehun passes him up (if he hasn't already, because sehun probably only needs a few more performances and show off his skills as a dancer to do so). minseok is already on par with him (you can fight me all you want on this, but one cannot say minseok doesn't know how to dance well and show that he has what it takes to be one of the main dancers). and if jongdae keeps on improving and actually learns how to freestyle, he could easily surpass kai. jongdae has this energy about him and a love for music that easily shows whenever he dances and how he's improving with every performance easily says something about his character and what he wants to do with his life. even kris and chanyeol could eventually surpass kai if kai continues to do what he's doing.

seriously, this may come off as harsh and you all may think i hate kai or something (i don't), but when you're the main dancer of exo, the dancer that is constantly recognized, i expect better. i expect someone willing to improve and try something new. i expect someone willing to show that they can keep the position they've been given and constantly show why they've been given it. i have high expectations for kai, can't help but have them, especially when he gets a billion teasers for him or is always recognized as the best dancer of exo. he has a title, a name to uphold, and yet, he's doing nothing to tell me that he deserves the title of best dancer in exo to be honest.) [ not going to lie, but kai is on the bottom of my bias list and his inability to improve his dancing skills is one of the major reasons why he is. ]

but to end on a good note, baekchen keeps slaying their song choices and once they finally get that rhythm they need, i'm sure they can start winning performances... kyungsoo just needs to take a deep breath, relax, and be less nervous, because he's a good singer, but when nerves get him, his performances are lackluster because you can see how nervous he is on his face. minseok did well, but when you have baekchen slaying as it is and the dance just not really doing the song justice, it's hard to leave a lasting mark.

baekchen may have slayed, but the song did nothing for me. it didn't leave goosebumps, it didn't leave me wanting more and the only times it did was when baekchen sang. so hopefully next week, the performance will be better and all the boys will be able to take away at least one thing away from this performance.

and i still think jongdae deserves a solo... make it happen sm, make it happen.

The dancer line was uneeded. Maybe Yixing and Sehun only but they didn't need that many people on stage. It made the performance look kind of messy.

I hate the fact that they all had their mics to their mouths when clearly the only people sing were BaekChen and Kyungsoo. :| (and maybe Xiumin)

I love reading your opinions. I really do. You're so opinionated, and it's nice to read a straightforward opinion that isn't sugarcoated.

Everything you said is true, although I don't have as strong an opinion towards the dancing line. To be quite honest, I pay attention to vocals more than dance moves, but now that they've released things that showcase their dancing more, it's hard NOT to focus on their dance moves. I hadn't really pinpointed a "dancer line" or "vocal line" since I had jumped into EXO bias first (which means Jongdae/Minseok biased and Jongdae/Minseok features and eventually Kyungsoo too). I do, however, see Yixing in high regards since Weekly Idol and he showed his routine. After that, I just liked his style more (same with his teasers). Kai never really caught me. I don't know. He was just so overexposed to begin with, and now he has so much to his name. It now...he seemed like the rising star, but now people like Jongdae, Yixing, Minseok, and even Sehun are rising up. There's so much you expect from Kai, which makes critique harder.
Now. As for vocal line, I agree with everything said. BaekChen really pull their weight. And seriously, if Kyungsoo can get his stage fright to get under control, he could really slay song after song. And if the others had more practice with singing, they could get to that point and they'll be unstoppable.

Also, I have a soft spot for Joonmyun's voice, but it isn't as strong...and don't really listen to it live that often.

[I only listened to the is2 performance. I have yet to watch it with the dances and everything.]

Yeah. That should be good for now OTL. I'm rambling.
