[Rant] Before you get respect as a writer, you need to give respect to the readers first

I do not normally write a whole blog post just to rant, especially because of another blog post that made me unhappy. Most of the time I would comment and let it go, but this matter has been bothering me for too long.

I have seen tons of writers who say they are writing for themselves, because they love to write, but then want to hear from their readers. They want subscriptions, comments, just anything to show them they are being appreciated, being respected. It sounds contradictory to me. I mean, if you write for yourself, you would write even if nobody would read your story. You would continue writing, regardless of anything. If writing is your passion, nothing else should matter. But to force readers to give you respect by making them subscribe or threatening them to only continue the story when you get a certain amount of comments - that's just wrong in my eyes.

I know every writer wants to hear something for the readers, but it should not be in the form of subscriptions and comments. I mean, you should not force them to do so unwillingly. If someone wants to subscribe or comment, they should do so willingly. I see lots of readers stop updating and deleting their stories because they argue nobody appreciates their stories. They put so much time in it but nobody gives them any respect. But those are also the people who say they write because they love to, they write for themselves. I do not get it why they would stop just because seemingly nobody reads it.

Respect is not something you should be striving for. Writing should be your goal and respect is something you gain as you walk that road. I always stood by my belief that if I become an author worth respecting, readers will speak up themselves. I will get comments and subscribers and upvotes without having to ask for it. That is why I have never once asked anyone to subscribe or comment on my stories. I never end my updates with 'please comment or subscribe!' but with a 'thank you and until next time!' because it should be good enough that someone is reading your stories. And people will give you respect if you deserve it. People will comment when you deserve it, subscribe to your story if it is worth it.

Saying that you dislike silent readers is already prove enough that you do not deserve any respect right now. Because if you want respect, you need to give some respect too. Give those who read your stories but do not give any feedback some respect. They read your story, that should be enough. The biggest joy of a writer is to have stories that are read. If you write well, they will. I feel disrespected as a reader myself that some people would say that silent readers are rude and impolite. What the?

I might not subscribe to every story I read, but I try to give long comments with constructive feedback whenever I read stories. I might not always have the time to, but that does not mean I do not try to. And you know, not everyone has that much time to comment on every story. Just because you do, does not mean others do. I do so especially to those who have stories with little to no comments, wanting to help them.

I mean, when I posted my first story, I had a handful of subscribers and from time to time a comment that I would read with glee. But I continued writing, not caring about anything else, becaise writing is what I want and I was sure that as long as I continued writing and practicing my writing, I would one day get appreciation from readers. Right now, I have readers that pop up and tell me they have been reading my stories all this time but want to comment because they really liked it a lot. They found my story worth commenting on.

Some readers might not be able to comment a lot, might not want to or are capable of subscribing. That should not matter. I read stories on LiveJournal without an account and without commenting, but the good stories I willl remember and reread and will tell other people. The same goes for stories on Asianfanfics. Respect is not a number, should not be a number. If you are a writer worth respecting, you will get your respect from the readers. You do not have to ask for it.

In sum, I believe that if you cannot respect that some readers will not say anything, will not subscribe, comment or upvote, then I do not really think you should be getting any respect either. Every reader is a reader, and your stories should be available for every one of them. You should not be saying that some are bad readers and some are good. They are all your readers, readers that took time to read your stories. Stop complaining about how you took so much time writing a chapter but nobody seems to appreciate it. When you act like that, you already lost my respect.

100% agree...
Somehow, they currently put their stories for subscribers only or even friends only.
it's lucky when u have subscribed the story you like the most however for some, even you have subscribed u still can't read because u're not in their friend list. I was upset on how writers' behave (not all though). I mostly decide to unsubscribed. huff!!

well-said!!! I hate it whenever I see comments like those -- for the same reasons. In my reading experience, the authors who write well never beg for comments or subscriptions. Rather, it's the ones who do that automatically turn me away and discourage me from reading. Shameless begging and bashing is counter-effective.

(In other news, I'm usually one of those "silent readers" people complain about lol >.< but once in a while I do try to comment if something touches me, as a way of saying "thanks for writing that; I appreciated reading it." so thank you :))

^^ hear hear! :D you have just re-inspired my reason for writing, and for that, I thank you~ sometimes people just become distracted by comments or subscribers that you forget about how good writing is.. but hey, no one's perfect and you reminded me of how lovely writing is <3

But since I will only stress myself trying to do better just to get a bit of emotion from the new readers or an affirmation that the story is doing just fine, my mind shifted. I dun care now LOL XDDD I have stories in private for me and myself only and stories here in AFF.

It's a give and take relationship. Without readers, story is useless. Without writers, there are no stories. So, respect each other.

"I do not get it why they would stop just because seemingly nobody reads it." Ah, so what use is a story then if it isn't read? o.O Note here that I will look at it from the perspective of the author. If there is no audience, I can understand why she or he may want to stop 'publishing'. There is a difference between 'writing' and 'publishing'. Authors write for themselves. They write what they want to read. And they can do just that, write. But when writer decides to share it and publish it online, and his target audience didn't seem to like it... The most logical thing to do is to discontinue publishing it. Why pursue a story that is not worth reading? He or she can write it on his/her doc to improve or not.

It goes down to purpose and objective. AFF is not a place for budding writers to get constructive feedback. A lot of my friends left for other writing platforms and forums. This is merely a fanfiction site, to have fun. So, I don't also get why authors need to beg for comments, upvotes or subscribers or why readers seem averse to giving out comments, etc.

Back in 2010, readers comment. But as the site grew bigger in 2012 [esp after the March 2012 crash when twitter world finally found about AFF's existence], the community changed. I wasn't used to having 100 silent readers. I was in my second year and I got terrified LOL I am used to having less readers at a time, but is very vocal XD Change is inevitable so one needs to be flexible. Satisfaction can no longer be derived from comments. Motivation, this time, must come from the author alone. When I started, writing is a joint experience, a ride with readers. It was fun. But since I can't dwell in the past, this lack of appreciation and the feel of a hundred eyes staring blankly at you, stressed me a lot, I ended my story in five chapters for the first time LOL. It was good that I introduced a conflict already, but not the major one, so I was able to wiggle my way out XD I did that twice.

did i lose your respect? because i did ask the readers to comment, but it's because i love replying and talking to people ;a; i can't ask people to subscribe my story because i do realize that they have the right to like or dislike it.

after i read this, i just felt like i already lost your respect ;a;

i like this. you made a very good point over something that is really aggrivating. I have to admit, I use write "please comment and subscribe!" in the end of storie but, you know, that was over my innocence. That was way back when I first started writing and wanted some feedback on my first story. But other than that I don't mind. Forcing people to subscribe and comment makes it look like the writer just wants the attention and not the appreciation. If I see that the views of my stories are increasing, then I know people read it. That's all it takes for me to be satisfied. And it's more aggrivating when the authors barley update and ask for it all. The only thing I "ask from readers" is to be my friend if they want to view my profile. But that's for privacy reasons. Otherwise, anyone can read my stories. Comment or not, Sub or not. Don't have a lot of subscribers or commenters? Writers should be greatful for those specks of people. Like I am.

point made. you said it all and said it very well. i rarely receive comments every time but people do stop by and leave something for me from time to time, surprise me with an upvoe, and i feel glee when i read/see it. comments are important, but that they should not hold that much value to the story written. if it's written well it'll definitely get something in the long run. writers tend to get readers who understand their positions and always respect them if they can see from the point of view of readers too. i also feel proud when readers sign up for aff just to leave a comment on my story too - i think that's one of the best things.

BLESS THIS POST
I've been meaning to speak up about this for a long time but I never found the right way to phrase it. The relatively new feature that was added ("subscribers only") just exacerbates the problem. To be honest, I don't read stories that mark it as that. For one, I wouldn't know enough of their stories and writing styles and for another, I immediately classify them as the attention seekers who claim they write for themselves but in the end only seek glory and recognition. There is nothing bad in that but the lapse between their words and actions just annoys me a little too much sometimes.

I love this post, I just get so frustrated when authors complain about people not commenting or subscribing
