Eating the Seoul Style: Ramyun

How many of you guys have had mac and cheese before? Okay, so basically everyone. Mac and cheese is an all time favorite among Americans and especially, for college students. The same applies to Ramyun noodles. It's cheap, its easy to make, it's quick and it's delicious. It requires basically 0 cooking skills and yet it tastes so terribly good. I'm here to help you enjoy your noodles the right way.

라면 (ramyun)

라면 (ramyun), for those of you who don't know, is the bowl of golden delicious god-made stuff smack in the middle of that picture. Even though the common romanization is Ramyun, it's pronounced lah-myun. The 면 (myun) part means noodles.

There are many many different brands of Korean's favorite snack meal. The common and the most favorited brands are 신라면 (shinramyun) and 너구리 (neoguri), the two shown above. There are about six packs in each of those bundles so that's hella cheap. Kpop idols have also filmed CFs for many brands. 2PM Nichkhun did a cheese ramyun, Beast did one for a bowl noodle brand, JYJ Yoochun did one, IU, T-ara Jiyeon and SNSD and more!

Now to cook dem noodles. There are soo many different ways to cook this. Experts say that the best absolute perfect way (see what I did there?! yes sir!) is to cook it exactly the way it instructs on the back of the label. I pleasantly disagree! Here's how I cook them. ahh food time

1. Boil the water.

That's a key word. Boil. Sit your back down and wait until you see the cute little bubbles come up.

2. Break the noodle into four pieces and drop them in

Breaking it up just makes it cook faster. And no, breaking it into exactly four pieces doesn't play any significant role here. If you added the noodle before the water is boiling then.. poo you. No good noodle fo yu!

3. Add a drop or two of vinegar

Now that is the little secret. The little drop of vinegar makes dem noodles softer and yummier.

4. Wait

Yeah sorry buddy. Life just keeps disappointing you left and right, huh.

5. Keep the noodle, dump the water

Another little secret. That water that you just cooked the noodle in contains all the oil and other bad stuff in the noodle. So when the noodle is just a little bit undercooked, fish out the noodles, ask them to wait patiently on a clean bowl and kiss the old water goodbye.

6. New water, same noodles

Just as it says. Get some new water and reinsert the noodles back in. I like to use little bit of water here cuz I don't like too much soup with my ramyun.

7. Timberrr!

Dump the prepackaged soup, the little dried up ingredients inside and crack in an egg or two. I only use about a third of the soup because dayum dat shiz hot! Oh hot damn this is my jamm....

8. Wait

Yeah. Again.

9. Jump up and cry tears of happiness because yo noodles are ready for you

Yeah. Do them.

10. Thank me

You welcum. winkwinkwinwknwinwk

A lot of people also like to add a lot of extra stuff in their noodles. Personally, I'm just too lazy and this already requires the most cooking I've ever done so I don't need anything else. But if you're one of those people, you can add almost anything in there and it'll still taste good.

As shown above, you can mix and add anything to fit your style. Also that's really red. Like life threatening red. Someone should go get that checked.

Also time for vocab. Yay

In the bowl on the left:

파 (pah) = green onions

게란 (gyelan) = egg

당근 (danggeun) = carrot

치즈 (chij) = cheese

(^also fail romanization there.... sorry >< oh and I just assumed that the white shape thing is cheese.. I have no idea though. Either way cheese is many's favorite addition)

In the bowl on the right:

새우 (saewoo) = shrimp

버섯 (buhsut) = mushroom

낙지 (nakjee) = small octupus

Alright so now that you've learned enough and drooled enough, go go make them. Have fun. And best of luck to you.

Hope you guys enjoyed this! cuz Nichkhun got some. and enjoyed it. winkwinwknwiwnkwnk
