ulzzang name: girim

style: Hyorin is not very fashion-conscious - her school uniform is left as it came. She doesn't add any cool accessories, nor does she really wear jewelry (she only wears a necklacke given to her by her parents), mostly because she's lazy in the mornings and doesn't bother prettying herself up. When she's not wearing her uniform, she prefers to wear loose, comfortable and baggy clothing. Oversized shirts and sweaters are a staple of hers. In addition, there isn't a skirt in sight, aside from her uniform, in her closet. If she's forced to wear one, she usually borrows it from friends.
others: Hyorin is near sighted and often wears glasses indoors when she's relaxing due to convenience and comfort. However, when she leaves the house, she pops on contact lenses since she hates the feeling of glasses slipping down her nose when she's busy and trying to study or practice.
background: Hyorin was born in Hongdae, South Korea from two loving parents. Her life was pretty typical - she wasn't ridiculously rich, nor was her family struggling to make ends meet, they had enough to comfortably live. Unlike most kids, Hyorin was probably more obedient than the rest. She is not the type of girl to talk back to her parents, nor has she ever gotten in an extremely heated argument. This is not because they get along all the time, but because Hyorin is always the first to apologize even if she feels like it's not her fault. Because her parents really valued filial piety, she was brought up with the mindset that her parents always had to be respected. And she wasn't bitter about it, it was second nature to her.

When she was 10, she discovered that she had a talent for singing. Her mother, wanting her to be more socially active, forced her to join her elementary school's choir and from then on singing had been a big part of her life. Although she was getting good grades in elementary to high school - she was one of those lucky students that did it with minimal effort. (She's not a genius, she just crammed in information better than the rest.) Singing, however, was something she loved. Hyorin wanted to continue improving her voice, her technique - she wanted people to listen to her, and to compliment her for it, therefore unlike her studies, she pursued singing more intensely and practiced whenever possible. Her parents didn't stop her from doing it, they were happy that she had so much passion for it, that they supported her.

In highschool, she managed to join an elite (well, in that school, the show choir had extremely high standards and only accepted the best vocalists, so in her mind it was pretty prestigious, even if other students saw it as a silly club.) And there she met a boy, who had one of strongest voices she had heard, and immediately she had great respect for him - and maybe even a silly one-sided fangirl crush. He had taken extra courses in the summer, and somehow managed to graduate a year earlier than her (even though they were the same age) and had early acceptance into Cheongsan. That was when she decided that she wanted to reach his level and therefore she aspired to enter Cheongsan as well.

personality: Hyorin is a bit of an idiot - socially speaking of course. Academically, she is near the top of her class, but whenever she's with friends, her dorky personality becomes apparent. She's the type to crack stupid, punny jokes, and usually she's the only one laughing at it as if she were a comedic genius. With this, it's easy to see that maturity is not something that comes easily to her. Hyorin's not a baby, but she definitely acts more childish than girls her age. Most teens / young adults are worried about their plans for the future, whereas Hyorin doesn't really pay attention to that and focuses more on the present.  'Relax, enjoy your youth now, worry later' seems to be one of her mindsets that she applies to everything but singing.

When it comes to her voice, Hyorin seems to become a different person. She puts every effort into bettering her vocals and technique, and she doesn't skip out on lessons either. Although she may be childish with her friends, when it's practice or performance time, this girl makes sure to get her act together. Which is also why her choir friends always about having a split personality - when they're out relaxing, she's a complete idiot, but when they are in the practice room - it's as if serious is her middle name.

Besides that, Hyorin tends to be a bit of a pacifist. Like her family life, she is always the first to apologize, but this is mainly due to convenience so she doesn't need to deal with their fighting. This also applies to her social life as well, whenever she gets into an argument with a friend, she quickly apologizes and hopes that everything goes back to normal. Most people know she's just giving them lip service, so they get even more annoyed because they know she's not being totally sincere - but Hyorin has bettered her 'forgive me' techniques over the years, so even if they are annoyed, they /usually/ forgive her quickly.

In addition to her pseudo-pacifistic nature, Hyorin is not the type to start drama because she finds it annoying and useless. She goes along with what her friends say, or side-steps their comments subtly if she disagrees with them. If she does get offended by something, she keeps it to herself and suppresses it until she forgets about it, or deals with it when no one's watching. Honestly, she's not that peaceful, and when she's angry, she often releases her annoyance behind closed doors, but in public, she still manages to maintain a carefree front. Besides, with her happy-go-lucky nature, most people forget that even she can get upset or angry.

family:
jang daehyun | 50 | sound engineer | father | a bit thick-headed, forgetful, slightly crude.
song ae ri | 48 | writer / producer for promotions | mother | outspoken, opinionated, easily offended.
friends:
bang minah | 19 | student / best friend - voice division | upbeat, charismatic, energetic (very much like hyorin, but less idiotic and more cute)
rival(s):
kim hyojung (aka. hyorin) | 22 | the top student in the whole voice division | blunt - has a sharp tongue, passionate, opinionated. (this is a one sided rivalry, hyorin has a great respect for hyojung's voice and she desperately wants to get to her level, while hyojung doesn't even know of the latter's existence, since well, they are both in different years and she's too busy to pay attention to first years. the fact that hyojung's nickname is 'hyorin' is just another factor in her one sided rivalry.)

love interest: Byun Baekhyun
history: Baekhyun and Hyorin met in their first year of high school when they both passed auditions and made it into the school's "elite" show-choir. She immediately fell in love with his ridiculously strong singing and his almost effortless belting. Of course, from that point, Hyorin placed him on a pedestal as /the/ best singer in school. Her admiration was also mixed with a small crush since he matched his amazing voice, with an equally charming and charismatic personality. But she knew it was mainly a frivolous fangirl crush, so she didn't pay much attention to it.

In the summer, he would take as many courses as possible and although no one knew why he did this, everyone soon found out that it was because he was offered early admission into Cheongsan. So, he graduated a year earlier than her and they stopped contacting each other. Of course she was slightly hurt, but she figured that it was because university was demanding.

When Hyorin passed the audition and was admitted into the same university. Hyorin soon found out that within the small vocal division of the school, Baekhyun had already made himself to be one of the top vocalists in the school, and the most promising in his year.

Since she was a first year, and by then he was in second year, they only had one class that overlapped, (because he just so happened to be taking a first year course) But when she approached him, he had forgotten who she was. Hyorin had accepted the fact that they weren't super close friends, but she had still expected the male to remember someone he had sang with ever since he began high school - was she really that forgettable, or did he just have too many friends that she never stood out?

In addition, it seemed like his reputation in Cheongsan only inflated his ego because instead of being the friendly guy she knew back then, he was now an egotistical, cocky .

This came as a shock to Hyorin because even though Baekhyun was extremely popular in highschool as well, but he didn't let that get to his head. So why the sudden change? She figured that the idea of 'fame changing people' could also apply to prestigious universities. The constant praise and compliments coming from highly acclaimed vocal professors fueled Baekhyun's ego to the point where he became conceited and overly-critical of everyone else. Basically, his reputation had made him into a stuck-up douchebag.

relationship: Despite his newly acquired irritating personality, Hyorin still looks up to his vocal abilities, and although his comments towards other singers are blunt and rude, she agrees with the main points of what he says (although he could phrase it in a nicer way), therefore to better her voice, she constantly bothers Baekhyun to practice and help her out. Or course, she also does this because she hopes singing with him will jog his memory and he'll magically remember who she was, but practicing is her main priority.

Baekhyun, on the other hand, doesn't remember Hyorin at all. He was a busy guy - he was the number one vocalist in his year, he didn't have time to dwell on the past. His main priority was focusing on his future. Baekhyun finds Hyorin's pestering to be annoying, and he only finally agreed to help her when she broke him down, and he couldn't ignore her anymore. Because of this, he gives her overly-harsh critiques and hopes that if he bashes her vocal abilities enough, she wouldn't want his help anymore. But somehow, no matter how much crap he throws at her, she doesn't seem to be offended at all. His egotistical personality is slowly worn down by how cheerful Hyorin always seems to be and he starts to sloooowly revert back to how he used to act.

request(s): (This will make more sense when you've read 'history' below)
Baekhyun harshly critiques her singing technique, calling out her voice for only being cute, and lacking a lower register. Tired of his constant accusations, Hyorin decides for the first time in her university life to sing using her natural voice, causing him to go speechless, not because her natural voice is THAT amazing, but because he just didn't know she had it in her. This voice would also trigger some sort of memory and he remembers a girl back in high school who sounded like her but who also had a ridiculously high voice when she was joking around.

backup love interest: Kim Jongdae

division: voice division
class requests: VOVMU000 (voice), VAMUS510 (history of singing), VAMUS111 (rhythm and performance), OPMUS101-2 (acting I for singers), VAMUS101-2 (movement I)

audition tape:  (1st audition / normal voice - rejected)
(2nd audition / high-pitched voice - passed)
reason for wanting to attend cheongsan: Hyorin had hoped to become a singer (not necessarily an idol) in the future, but the direct reason for entering Cheongsan was because she aspired to become like Baekhyun. Honestly, she sounds like some crazed fangirl chasing after him but all she wanted was to have the same vocal education as him - performing with him was just a benefit.
specialty: Her dual voices. Her regular voice is a bit on the normal-lower range (first audition), but she is able to reach extremely high notes (as heard in her second audition - 0:37) Because of this, she is known as a split-personality vocalist in highschool. In university, however, most people only hear the latter, and they don't even know that she has a lower register.
recommendation: n/a
history: Honestly, she didn't go to a highschool that was known for having strong musical programs. She just lucked out that her school had a prominent show choir that had won many competitions and awards.

When Baekhyun was offerred early admission to Cheongsan, Hyorin was happy for him and also  jealous that he was soaring so far ahead of her. Instead of auditioning to enter the fall/winter semester of university, even though her high school studies wasn't over, she auditioned for the spring/summer semester. If she was actually accepted to enter in the spring semester, she would've probably figured something out to complete her high school credits before enrolment. Unfortunately, during her audition, she got rejected. The admission judges unanimously agreed that she had a strong voice, with good control, but they commented that her voice was nothing special, and it lacked uniqueness. In such a demanding world of music - one needed to stand out, and unfortunately Hyorin did not, therefore she didn't pass.

At a loss on what to do, Hyorin consulted her friends who jokingly told her that if the judges wanted something unique, she should audition using her lolicon aka. ridiculously adorable high pitched voice instead.

This voice came about when she was still a sophomore in high school, Baekhyun was constantly treating her like a guy, and to prove her femininety (and annoy him), she decided to sing in an extremely high-pitched, girly voice. Surprisingly, he complimented her about it and called her cute for the first time since they were in the club together. From them on, she would sing using her higher register when they were together. It came to the point where the choir called her the 'Split Personality Vocalist' since she sounded like 2 different people. (This nickname was also combined with the fact that she was carefree and silly most of the time but strangely serious during practice)

Not knowing whether it was a good idea to use her cutesy voice for an audition, because if she failed, she would need to wait till the next semester to audition again, she shook her worries aside and sang in her higher register for her second audition. The judges remembered her from her first audition and were impressed with how high her voice could go. They commended the duality of her vocals, but not-so-subtly hinted that if she wanted to stand out in this competitive field, it would be better to work on her higher register. So after that day, Hyorin only sings using her lolicon voice.

story: Hyorin is looked down upon by most of the students in the class due to her cute voice. It's not as if they bully her, but there is a sense of condescension, of course maybe this was what everyone felt since this division was just highly competitive.

Since she only has a cute voice - or at least this is what they think, they immediately write it off as 'weak', even though she is able to hit ridiculously high notes and belt it out without using her head voice like most others would resort to. Her peers don't believe that she has the ability to sing low notes since they've never heard her sing in that range before. In addition, since they believe that she's only a good soprano, they often vocals as if they were 'forever on helium' (thus her university persona.) But hey, at least she was standing out.

Because of this, a reason why she asks Baekhyun to help her with her technique, was because she wanted to feel more comfortable with her higher register - she hoped that if she practiced enough this would become her new natural voice. Singing in her cute voice for long periods of time placed stress on and she wanted to overcome that feeling. He later unintentionally triggers her to sing using her comfortable lower-register, and from then, begins subtly supporting her while helping her to train her natural voice.

The story of her university life will probably be her struggle between whether to use her natural voice, or her more memorable adorable voice. She feels like her lolicon voice isn't /her/ and so she wants to do one of her solo performances using her natural voice, but she just doesn't know if it's a good idea. In the end, maybe showcasing that she is able to do both well is the key to her success.

suggestions: although baekhyun is her love interest, i'm fine with them just being good friends in the end. it'll be nice to see baekhyun as a strong supporter of her and vice-versa. ; u ;
