I Really Don't Get the Ulzzang Thing

I've been working on a oneshot with Himchan, and looking up pictures of him keeps leading me to other ulzzangs. Now, please remember anything I say is just my personal opinion and I respect anyone who likes the ulzzang thing. I barely understand the whole concept itself and the point of it all, so please forgive my ignorance. I discovered KPop in May of 2011, so I'm still learning Korean culture and I certainly don't know as much about it as I do the Japanese, but you can blame that on me watching anime since childhood.

From what I know, ulzzang means "best face." I also know that Koreans have a very specific idea of beauty, with the V-line face, big eyes, slim and tall body, etc. whereas here in America we are taught to find beauty in many forms. I don't really like that about Korean culture. Of course people who look like that are beautiful, but I'm just the kind of person who finds beauty in a lot of things and to have such a set idea is strange to me. Not bashing anyone, just my opinion.

Looking at these ulzzangs, it's clear most have had some kind of plastic surgery, especially with the eyes. South Korea is the plastic capital of the world and Koreans have a very relaxed attitude of it, I get that. Korean surgeons are also extremely good at what they do, because I haven't seen many Korean surgery slip ups, while the rest of the world is usually screwed afterwards. If anyone I know is ever determined to change anything about their appearance, I'm telling them to go to South Korea, no questions asked. But, I really wished all these Asians didn't want to change themselves so much. At first they all wanted to look more Caucasian, and now it's become something new altogether.

I hate it when I look at a female idol and it's damn obvious she's had surgery on her eyes (even worse on a guy). If an Asian gets double eyelids for medical reasons, then okay, but just because they want to be accepted, then it's for the wrong reasons. If they themselves think it's just the most beautiful thing in the world, then who am I to judge? But I think at least half (if not most) idols are pressured into it, and I hate that. For someone to not accept you just because you don't look exactly like every other Barbie in the world, come on! It's ridiculous. Personally, I like the look of single eyelids and small eyes. It's what drew me to Asians in the first place, and why I ended up finding them gorgeous.

I'm quoting Adele here. "I make music for the ears, not the eyes."

Now I love a y idol as much as the next fan, but my idea of beauty is different I guess. I like flaws. It makes the person special and unique. It's what makes them beautiful to me.

And it's very hard to find a flaw on an ulzzang. That kind of perfection is a flaw to me, the kind of flaw that I hate.

I fell for Aron of NU'EST when I saw the MV for "Not Over You," in a scene where it looked like it had been really hot that day and everyone was sweating. He looked a mess, and I loved it. It was one of the few times I'd seen a KPop idol not looking like a god/goddess of love.

So you understand that I notice people for what is unique to them. That's just me. If I see a group's MV and everyone looks the same at first glance, I quit watching. It's probably the reason I don't listen to that many girl groups. Guys always get away with not being as made up, so they're not pressured to the extent women are. It and I hate it, but because guys seem to look more diverse in the KPop world, I just gravitate to them more. I love 2NE1 because they aren't one of those "perfect" looking groups. Yes, I know Bom has had multiple surgeries, but I think it worked out well for her. On Youtube I'm the top comment for the "Fire" (Space version) MV, and I keep getting replies about Bom for what I said. (People need to shut up.)

I'm not saying I hate all ulzzangs. And I don't hate the ulzzangs themselves. I just hate how people think the "best face" is a very narrow definition of beauty. I'd like to see more people of shapes and sizes be thought of as ulzzangs, that's all.

By the way, I still don't get the point of ulzzangs. Are they like models and just post pics of themselves for your viewing pleasure? Please explain in the comments. zRebel just doesn't get it. At all.

For a long time I didn't really like Himchan because of how he looked. I'm pretty sure he's gotten surgery on his eyes and nose, and I just didn't like it. But then I saw him in some of their shows and watched him laugh and smile. I couldn't not like him anymore. He has such a great smile and he's so much fun. That's another thing I like, great smiles and comedians. The one requirement for my future husband is that he has to make me laugh every day.

Of course, as much as I've bashed the ulzzang subculture, I am a bit of hypocrite. All girls at one point in their life have wanted to change themselves. Let's face it, we are a very insecure gender. No wonder, we're pressured to compete with one another so much. I am guilty of wishing I was a whole different person, but I've grown up and come to love myself. That's important girls, you need to learn to find beauty within yourself, as well as what is on the outside. You'll be a lot happier when you're confident, and confidence is very y.

But back to ulzzangs. I just don't get the concept. Why do they all want big eyes and V-faces and why do people enjoy looking at them so much? *shrugs* But I love Himchan. He's just too much fun to not like. ^^

And now I gotta finish the oneshot with him. Later, peeps. *waves* XD

Wow. Just last night, I stumbled upon a post on Netizen Buzz. It has the before (bare) and after (with make-up, contact lenses, wig) pics of ulzzangs. I was amazed on how make-up and circular lenses could change a person's appearance I couldn't recognize him/her. I posted a blog too. I just felt bad that they have this set standard of what beautiful is that they go through that. My friends watched Ulzzang Shidae and so they know of this transformation before I did. I wonder if someone told them they were pretty even without make-up and large eyes. I dunno either. They take pics and post them online. Others are models, I think.

I honestly had no idea what an ulzzang is until this post oops I'm stupid XD
"I make music for the ears, not the eyes." --> this is true for Hollywood music, but I really don't think it applies to K-Pop. I think what makes K-Pop different is that it's a very visual genre, and that the visuals are just as important as the sound. I like that about K-Pop. If I don't like the MV of a song, I kind of start not liking the song in general so much. Also, if an MV is awesome, it makes me more likely to like the song.
I think visuals are important. I think it's important for an idol to put an effort into looking good. I never really minded plastic surgery, but I am against the whole beauty standard thing, I agree :)
