The abuse of "Tell me what you think"

Okay.. So I am in a 'bad mood' right now. Scratch that. I am not in the bad mood, I am in a furios mood as of now. I wanted to kill someone, I wanted to strangle someone, I wanted to... urghhhhhh..

Why?

Of course some of you are curios (some are irritated because I am ranting, once again)

Okay, let me tell you a story.

In FFN, I have an account there. Thus I am reading stories there.

One fanfic caught my interest, it was really interesting. The plot is interesting but of course, not all writers are perfect and she (The writer, I am assuming that she was a she.) has some mistakes and the parahraphing and some the monologues are kind of confusing. But I respect that, cause I am not a perfect writer and I admit that my grammar is horrible.

But let's skip that and go to the real thing.

So in every chapter. she added on her author notes this line:

"Please Read and Review. Tell me what you think"

So of course, I reviewed and told her what I think. I pointed out some of her mistakes in the story and give my thoughts about the plot itself. I also kind of complained about the monologue thing. And the characters personality and all. But I did that not to disrespect her, instead I did that with the thought in my mind. That it is a help to improve her story more.

But what I get in returned?

This:

"If YOU think that my story is horrible then don't read. I am the author, I have the write to do whatever I want in my story. And I am not a perfect person, I sometimes make mistakes. I am sure that you do as well. If you don't like the flow and characteristics of my characters then DON'T READ! I don't need your opinion!"

............

....

O---kay.

I am so pissed for the reason that. How dare she!!!

She told -wrote- in her author notes in EVERY chapters that people can tell her what they think so why is she complaining IF I am doing what she told me to do. I am writing my opinion, I am letting her know my thoughts about the story.

I don't really get it you know. How writers said "Tell me what you think" but if someone critics their works, they turned into a HOT MESS who complained because someone pointed out something negative in their story.

Well, excuse me. The moment you said "Tell me what you think". You should be ready to receive positive AND NEGATIVE reviews and comments. If you don't like criticism then say this instead: "Tell me positive things ONLY"

Okay???

Urghhhh..

I just need to let that out.

Sorry guys.

Ahh ... her words is kinda harsh....I can understand why you so angry... maybe she misunderstood your words. Try to explain to her, if she still don't accept it then fine lol. Or just ignore her, that maybe better.

Some authors are like that.. they ask you if there's something wrong with their work but they get offended :P that's one of the reasons why I don't suggest things :P so just ignore her~

Not leaving a comment is worse I guess. At least you took time to tell her what you think. My unnie used the sandwich to illustrate how we can comment. Start with something nice, then go into the details of what needs improvement, then end with an encouragement. It is better if we give positive comments along with the negative so that the author would be more receptive. There are things we like and we don't like in stories we read but instead of just focusing on the negative, let us give even a few positive, encouraging words. I mean, there must be something we like in the story, that even with its flaws we continue reading.

Her response is nothing new. There are writers like her here and I have met a few of them. They ask for feedback or opinions about their fic in a blog post, but after you took time to read and actually comment, they will get mad at you. Hehe. When all I did was encourage her to do better by providing tips and suggestions. So, I just explain that the comment wasn't mean to discourage her as a writer. Someone asked about her grammar, and I told her how many mistakes I spotted. She asked me to enumerate them. I did. Then she deleted my comments lol I gave her an average score while those after me, who saw the edited version, gave her a high one. Lol.

We will meet different personalities every day. Let us just know how to keep ourselves in check while dealing with them.
