Original Characters (And why hating on them is... disagreeable)

This is an op-ed on original characters (OC's) and why I think you're idiotic disagree with you if you resent them.

Firstly, by "resent" I mean that you hate original characters in general. I do not mean to say that hating one specific character (for whatever reason, perhaps you dislike annoying antagonists) is wrong; I mean to say that hating all original characters ever (simply because they are an original character) is wrong.

Because you're wrong.

I've seen people who think OC's are useless or dumb or frustrating. But what these people fail to realize is that, on this website at the very least, all characters are original characters.

Simply because an author uses an idol in their story does not mean that idol is not an original character. How would it ever be possible to write about a real person you do not know [much of] completely non-fictionally? It's not. Just because you're using the idol's face does not mean that that idol is not an original character. Sure, we've all seen those disclaimer messages that exclaim "I do not own this person!" but you still own the intellectual property that is the character you've created based on the person.  You still have to develop and describe the idol just as you would a completely made-up character, albeit most likely in less detail.

The argument that the idol is still not an original character because you "know so much about them" and therefore can write very accurately about this person exists because you assume that the image and personality the idol promotes and displays is true. However, that's not an educated assumption. You should be assuming that this may or may not be the idol's true self; a tug of war of or give and take nothing, if you will. No matter what you assume, the idol is  still an original character because you are basing the character off of the present public personality or creating your own.

The celebrities you've decided to use in your story is just as original character-y as all the other original characters.

I've going to use this confession from AFF Confessions on tumblr to help fortify my point.

(The confession brings up my next point, but I'll get to that soon.)

Most every character in a book is original. They can be based off of someone, but if the characters appear in the long run (or a semi-long run), they are most likely original (assuming that not plagiarism has happened). Characters in those published books listed above are original. Hell, if all this hasn't convinced you that if you're using a celebrity, they're still an original character than maybe Fifty Shades of Grey or The Mortal Instruments will.

The often criticized and mocked by anyone but a housewife book of Fifty Shades of Grey was originally Twilight fanfiction. That was once Edward and Bella getting down with it rather than whatever the names were changed to (I've never read the book, don't whip me).

Believe it or not, the entirety of The Mortal Instruments was once or based off of Harry Potter! It was Harry Potter fanfiction!

It is so easy to change the names so that your totally-not-an-original-character character (the idol) becomes an original character. And why is it so easy? Because (s)he was always one! Focus on a bit of revising, editing, the usual stuff and you have a novel (and a character) all its own.

Another less than respectable reason to hate OC's is because they are ALWAYS Mary Sue's (or the complete opposite, which I'm sure has a name) (see picture below).

Here's a thing I was taught when I read How To Read Literature Like a Professor last year: "Always" is [almost] always inappropriate to use when speaking about literature.

Because there's always going to be some fool who will prove you wrong.

Of course, referring back to what I said earlier, people who hate OC's fail to realize that all or most characters, on this website at the very least, are original. So that means the second male lead, idol or not, that didn't end up with the girl is also an OC. This nullifies the point that OC's always end up with the romantic interest.  Also, how dull would a story be if every character was a Mary Sue or Gary Stu? I imagine even parody writers wouldn't stoop that low (but who knows).

Well, I've spent enough time (two days to be exact) writing what has been written above. I would have commented on another confession but I'm tired. Two of the three confessions about OC's on AFF Confessions posted thus far hate on OC's and I disagreed with that, so I wrote this. Probably more lengthy than what most people would've responded with but I wanted to get my opinion on OC's out there (even if no one would read it).

Thanks if you got it this far, I guess. Leave what you feel about OC's in the comments.... if you want.

And here's the last confession:

Haha! I commented on that last confession in my blog. Some people should stop making and stating generalizations and assumptions. Perhaps they have read perfect OCs, but it doesn't mean all OC's ever written are like that. And like what I mentioned in that post, the kpop artists featured in my fics are essentially OCs. I write their fictional counterparts based on how I perceive them. I cannot claim that the Donghae in my fic is the real Donghae. Even though writers try to make their characters close to the real ones, giving them their mannerisms or preferences, they are still not the real kpop artists.

Glad that someone agrees with me on this :)

there are some seriously well-written ocs
i just haven't seen many on aff
like there's a couple harry potter ones that i absolutely love

my problem with a couple of oc stories on aff is that some people, instead of making a perfectly respectable oc as her own character, make this kind of black-hole-sue "you" character. in an effort to make this character more "relatable", they get rid of any and all visible personality traits.
then, it's kind of easy to pretend that she's "you", but it's also kind of boring and pointless.
and then the love interest tends to be flat and boring and overall it's just not a story that can capture my attention well

there was this one time i was reading a girl group fic
which can be okay, if you don't make them blatantly amazing (perfect all-kill with predebut single + immediate triple crowns on every show ever + jealousy from very established girl groups)
but it was like there was a vocal, a dancer, a rapper, and then a super purty maknae who was an amazing singer and dancer and rapper and had like every male idol ever thinking that she was the best thing since sliced bread
that's like, you didn't even try to make a character before getting into blatant wish fulfillment

tl;dr: i don't really have a problem with ocs. i have a problem with ocs that are blatantly written with wish fulfillment and nothing else in mind.
