Intelligent is what you could describe Ling when you first get to know her. At school, she does really well academically even if her family is of lower class. She would burn the midnight oil and study most of the time. You could see her at the school's library during lunch break; silently reading on a book or two, or on weekends, she would stay holed up in the public library from noon till evening. Many had call her names; 'Peasant', 'Lowlife', 'Slave' and even 'Rubbish'. Due to her class in the society, she is intelligent enough not to fight back and just let them do and say whatever they want. Ling would just go her way and waste her time with studying because she was aiming for the Government Entrance Exam.

Ling is also an independent girl. She knows that her family is poor, and asking for things would only make her feel terrible for both her parents and her family. So, she learns to cope with things on her own and tries not to burden her family. There's only so little for the family to eat, to cloth themselves and she has other elder and younger siblings to take care of, that Ling lost all interest in the joys of the world like the rest of the teenagers her age is enjoying. She's a headstrong character and would do things on her own, trying her best to prove that even a low life could present themselves like a noble and be proud of who she is. Ling even learnt martial arts in order to protect her own self from being bullied as she grows up.

This girl is undeniably courageous. She has been withstanding the teases, the insults and the bullying because all she could think of is someday, they all would pay for discriminating the lower-ranked people and feel sorry for themselves. Her courage is admired by many of her friends of the same family class, and they adore her for having such a huge dream on changing the fate of the people like her. She would always tell them stories of how she would change people's perception on the rights a lower-ranked family deserves and how she would undo the poverty her neighbourhood area is going through. Many adults had laughed at her, even her own parents state that she is crazy.

Despite her courageous character, Ling actually has a shy side of hers. This happens mostly because of the insults she receives and because she lacks in confidence. The only thing she could is to bow her head down while remembering what each and every one of the insults she receives until she became numb of it all. She would not say anything since she is shy of what they would say to her since she could not fight back and in the end, she would just keep quiet and goes away to study on her own. Not to forget, Ling is very shy when it comes to the interacting with the other gender. She would blush like mad IF a guy comes up to talk to her. But, most of the time, she was just fooled around with, and it made her become shy which leads to insecurity.

Basically, the Lees are made up of 8 people which consist of her parents, 2 elder brothers, Ling herself and 3 other younger sisters and brother. She grows up in the house her grandparents left her parents with 5 other siblings filling up the household. Ling is independent, which means there's not much trouble coming from her as she could do things on her own. At school, Ling is always bullied, but she never told her parents about it because she know that their ranks in the Empire is what causing them such mistreat. They call her name and bash her most of the time, but she still went on with her studies since she loves books and that she dreams big, and in order to fulfill her dreams, she would need all the knowledge she could get. Outside, people would look at their family in disgust if they are seen around the town or even worse they are sometimes ignored when they wish to purchase some goods. People would always look down on them.

Ling then makes a courageous decision to study all out to enter the Government Entrance Exam. This exam takes place once every four years and since she was young, Ling has been aiming for this exam to come when she finally reaches the right age to be able to take the exams. She hopes that with all the hard work and effort, despite her parents constant shake of their heads and her brothers' constant teasing, she would be able to pass with flying colours and prove to the other people that the lower-classed people are just as capable of doing something as the nobles and commoners are. Ling took up the exam and finally, going on her own, she made it until the Final Exams. Ling was overjoyed and her parents were surprised with her, and so are many others who knows their family of eight. But, she was unlucky as when the Finals is supposed to commence, she was ordered to search for a certain lost scroll by the Head of Minister; who detests the low lives very much. She was actually sabotaged and being the lower class she is, she has to obey his order and went off to the Royal Library to find it.

While she was searching for the said scroll, she mumbled to herself, complaining about the discrimination towards the poor and so on and so fourth about her points that she would use during her Finals. Little did she know, that the Princess of Shiro Empire had sneaked up on her and followed her to the Royal Library since she heard of an Exam Candidate who is a lady and looks like her if you would look closely. The Princess then surprised her and she fell on heaps of scrolls that she couldn't even finish going through yet. Then, the Princess made a proposal to her to swap places with her and to stand in her place as the Princess of Shiro Empire. The Princess told Ling that she heard what the girl said and that using her points, she would be able to convey whatever she wants especially if she stands in as the Princess of Shiro.

So, since then, she would come to the Palace's Tower to visit the Princess as a friend the Princess becomes attached to. But, little did other people know that they carefully swapped their places, taught each other things and soon after learning enough things about one another, they transformed and become a different person.

The Lees are one of the family that lives in the lower-ranked family district. They are known for their kindness which her parents would help their neighbours and friends do what ever they could when they offer to lend a hand. Although they are from a lower class, Ling never complained about the things they lack at all because she knows, somewhere out there, there are other people who are suffering more than they are. The family is quite popular too among the low-ranked society because of Ling. She would always spread her ideas about discrimination; some would admire her courage, but some would just laugh it off.

Prince of Shiro Empire (Princess of Shiro Empire's cousin); Huang Zi Tao is a very hardworking person despite he is the prince. He does not let others do things for him even if it is their duty, As an apprentice of the Emperor, Tao studies very hard to uphold his position as the Emperor's most trusted men who will be on the throne when the right time comes. He would study about the their empire and their opposite, the Kuro. Be it financially, to military and even the people, he has to know every single detail and try to improve all of it.

Tao is undeniably a soft-spoken person since he was a child. He dislikes using his authority and power, and practices manners and being polite with others no matter what age or classes they are from. Tao is always respected for this behaviour of his and many supports him for being the next Emperor. Tao would just politely answers that it is the Emperor's decision and has no power whatsoever over it.

With his soft-spoken trait and being the hardworking person he is, Tao is also an understanding individual. He would not let others suffer because of him and he would understand what others feel. He would always listen when the people have problems and he would try to help them. Tao has never been to the lower-ranked province since his parents says that it is off-limits, but he just thinks that it is not true and some day he wishes to go to the prohibited province and meet the people there.

Finally, this prince is also well-known for his athletic personality. He is as well-trained as the Princess of Shiro is and they even trained together when they were young. He likes to practice the martial arts he learnt since he was small especially Wushu. Tao would never miss the chance to spar with one or two of the best fighters their Empire has and he would really enjoy fighting. This prince would also sometimes sneak out to head off to the town to watch a public fighting competition and once he even participated as a masked stranger who won the competition and donated everything that he won to the villagers.

Intellectual is TaeMin's biggest personality, He is one of the scholars who passed the Final Government Entrance Exam. He is an acquaintance of Ling when they both got to know each other when they took the Exam. TaeMin is also childish at times. He likes to visit and study together with Ling whenever the Exams would be approaching and share thoughts with each other. He is also a very cheerful person. There are times, when Ling seems a little unhappy when she felt hurt of what people were insulting her with when she took the Exams, and TaeMin would find a way to cheer her up. TaeMin is also very friendly and does not care about classes and ranks the Empire withholds. He likes to be friends with Ling and her family members and that's it, it is his decision.

expand storyline:

Ling's main point of entering the Palace as an exchange of her life with the Princess's freedom is to stop the discrimination and lower or weaken the people's point of view on different classes in the society. She would study all the things she never thought she could get access to and people would obey her wishes as the next ruler of the Empire. She participate in the Court and help the Emperor in his duty. The Emperor, being an intellectual individual, notices the change in his daughter since she always brought in this new lower-ranked friend with her to the tower and finally learns the truth when he himself saw the girl's little tattoo when his daughter never have one as a Royal family. He did not took actions right away and tries to figure out what this girl by the name Ling is trying to do by imposing as his daughter and endangering her own position as a lower class peasant.
But then, Tao comes along, back from his journey to complete a certain mission given out by the Emperor. He comes back and receives a new order from the Emperor. He is told to figure out the reason behind his fiancee's (Princess of Shiro) sudden personality change. He found out that she is actually swapping places with the Princess and is just a lowly commoner. He did not tell the Emperor right away, but by that time, the Emperor have already found out about Ling's identity. Tao does not falter and misjudge yet he tries to befriend this girl who is imposing as his fiancee and cousin to find out the truth behind her identity. One day, when she was on her way home after changing back to her real self with the Princess, she came face to face with Tao, who took her hand and raised it to show the pearl bracelet he gave her.
During all the time Ling and Tao were together, their constant chatting - Ling is very shy at first - (before he found out about her) and sharing stories about one another - which Ling is still very shy with and bows her head low when they talk to each other - (after he found out about her), they would slowly develop feelings for each other. Tao is afraid to let the Emperor know about Ling's and the Princess's secret, and he even told her that if the truth comes out and Ling is to be punished, Tao would also take the punishment with her.
Maybe, someday, they would get caught and the punishment for Ling would be severe when the Ministries and the Emperor holds a meeting. But, since the Emperor personally know Ling even when she thought he didn't had given the girl a chance. She is given a spot among the Scholars and her very first mission is to improve on the provinces which were going through poverty and are being discriminated.
