She made you decent, and in return you made her so happy

I took my time to watch a film titled “One Day” today. The book is popular and more loved than the film, but I haven’t read it. For some who already read the book, there are comments that said this film doesn’t do the book any good and they could have been make a better film for such phenomenal book. But for me, this film gave me just enough and I gave my love to it.

First of all, I love the setting at the beginning, well, most of the time they had beautiful setting, but there was just something that gave me an impression with the dawn of the exquisite city and after party university graduated and to add the beauty, the after rain.

And I love what happened between them. She made you decent, and in return you made her so happy is one of my favorite quotes from the film. The quote actually defines everything that happened between Dexter and Emma. Dexter, a playboy which eventually grown a thing with drugs and alcohol become decent, if it was not charming when he had Emma with him. And when he lost her, he just lost himself.

Emma in the other hand found her happiness in Dexter. Like no matter how hard she tried to get rid of him, she just couldn’t because there lay her happiness. If she got rid of him, well, it just meant she got rid of happiness. And Dexter never does her any harm, because she made him decent and so they made each other right.

She was my bestfriend.  Dexter said and that was what they were. Bestfriend. And I couldn’t say how beautiful they made they word be. Dexter even though he was a player and he ended up messing his own life, he never does her any harm. He wasn’t that jerk he used to be when he was with other people and it just happened naturally. She didn’t need to do anything because her presence alone was all it took for him to be decent.

I grow to love them as I watched them every July 15th. I watched their relationship, what they did with their life, how they rose, how they fell. Not just in romantic way between them, but fully, their life. All beautifully shown in just one day of their life but it was enough for me to relate and understand. I fell in love with their relationship and hope the happiness they deserve after all those years struggling.

And that was why I was crushed by the end of the film.

(major spoiler)

Actually, I knew that Emma was going to die in the film (I read the youtube comments which said so) so I thought it wouldn’t really hit me. And I even knew when it was going to come, so I like (no, don’t tell me this is where she is going to die. No, it can’t be right? But the situation is perfect. No, maybe not here. No. no. Damn, I’m right. This is where she dies)

After being with them for twenty years, there’s this thing inside of me that screaming,

(No! At least if you want to kill her, kill her in softer way!! No. Don’t end it here. Please.) And I just kept screaming (Okay, this is what you need to stir up the emotion, at least let her survive until she arrived at the hospital, at least until she met Dexter, at least until they had their final words. At least don’t do that to her body! Come on, this is their anniversary day! They had perfect planned date ahead! They are in love! Just please do them this favor. Twenty years together, twenty years of love, struggling, life, and everything that came with it. They were so right, so perfect, so beautiful. They deserve it.)

And really, I was literally begging as I watched the scene with tears streaming down like crazy. And believe me, I cry when I write this. They film is good because they show the beautiful feeling and relationship that give you enough reasons to sincerely cry with them.

And the last, the film just didn’t want me to stop crying. The scene where Dexter lay on the floor after beaten up and Sylvie (his ex-wife) came to help him then he started to cry as he said (I screw up. I screw up.) That was just… heartbreaking. I cried with you, Dexter.

And the scene where his daughter cast aside his hand put me to worry as I afraid she would grow up with the thought that her father was nothing but garbage and grown up to be a bad person. And here’s the thing about Dexter, Dexter was not a bad man, he screwed up, but he was never bad. He was good with Sylvie, and Sylvie did rescue him with his state in the past even though she later had affair with other. And he took a good care of Jasmine (his daughter) when she was a baby. He tried to be a good husband, a good father. Dexter had his things when it came to the person he loved.)

But thankfully, at the end of the film, it showed that he worked his way with his daughter and his daughter was nothing but sweet. (and I love how she always loved Emma.)

And I would be complete fine. Completely, perfectly, fine, if the film end there. With the warm smile, sweet words, chuckle, heart-smacking “She was my best friend”, another gorgeous setting. I would at least have some remaining pieces of heart if it ended there. But guess what, no. This mean film wouldn’t let you to even have pieces of your heart. (“You need to cry more. You need to suffer and end up writing about this film with heart wrenching pain,” said the film.)

The movie end with another scene of Emma and Dexter in their 1988 years, after their almost did it, we found out that they went for a walk and got another session. The next scene where they ran down stairs, running on streets, sharing kisses (giving a perfect film poster) and to add, with my most favorite setting of the movie  (exquisite city with after rain)

It ended when they agreed to meet each other again in the future, and how she believed they would, and how it became the start of everything, of all those one day in twenty years,

And how they said goodbye, as she walked away, further and further, and how she became smaller in his sight, and how they did everything with smile and how I realized it was the start of their love for each other in that moment,

And how that smile and love survived through all those years, and how they still had it, and how their goodbye happened twenty years later on the same one day.

(For me, the scene indicates what happened twenty years later, they parted with love and believe they would meet again. And how she walked away from him, and how he kept looking at her, but then in the end, he moved on and even without her, she was always in his mind and heart)

Note, I was literally screaming (NO! THIS TIME NO! You violate me enough!) as the film went black and told me it was over. That was how they end it!! Can you believe them?! Can you believe how, how, meany they are! I told you, at least end it at the hill! This was just… too much.

Well, that was a little bit of me and One Day. Painful.

But in the end, One Day will be an unforgettable journey and became one of my favorite love stories. Dexter, Emma, I wish you happiness.

A little bit about the cast.

Jim Sturgess is charming! I love him with all kind of haircut and style he provided in each one days. And of course, the smile. He has this lovely face which was not just good looking but also sweet. He gives you the vibe of lovable bad boy.

His acting was wonderful. The sweetness and the pain. I could feel it.

Anne Hathaway. Conventionally beautiful. I know some people was crying because her accent, but because English is not my language, so I didn’t really pay attention to it. Well, even tough I must admit that I didn’t realize she was using an English accent before I read other comments (I though she was jut playing with accent). But, overall, she was lovely.

The film actually has list of lovely ladies with Romola Garai and Patricia Clarkson in addition.

Okay, this film has a set of eye candy cast.

Conclusion, this film is beautiful and heartbreaking. This is a love story. I am feeling the love.

In case, someone read this, please feel free to recomend me a film!
