Cliches in Fanfiction

Cliche (noun): predictable, overused expression or idea

Emily decided that there are 9 cliches in fanfic writing today; she also concluded that I have written 4 of them. Those are:

1.
Amnesia - okay I made it work, right?  In I Remember, I purposefully did not focus too much on the amnesia, and instead just used it to kind of set everything in motion.
2. Falling for your best friend - um, no spoilers, but anyone who has read My Best Friend knows that there is a pretty big plot twist and that it is not the typical best friend story. I guess that 2min story I wrote where Tae is a e also counts too haha oh lord.
3. Falling for the popular guy in a school - I guess Fairytale kinda fits this category. I honestly don’t like Fairytale that much so....we’re going to move on
4. Arranged marriage to some jackass/playboy - okay I had major feels when Leeteuk was leaving for the army so Picture Perfect happened. However, the cliche arranged marriage is some sweet girl engaged to a jerk. However, in my story, my main character has major commitment issues and she’s kind of the jerk while Leeteuk is an angel.

Others she named were:
1. Falling in love with a bully/gangster -  yeah I don’t know. Gangs are not that easy to get closed to...just saying. In real life, would probably be a lot scarier.
2. Teacher/student - yeah also not going there. I have still yet to meet a super hot teacher. Our IT guy at school is kinda attractive, but...ewww not to date or anything.
3. Step-siblings (or real siblings. I mean...to each their own...) - Well in Black & White, Joonmyun and Kyungsoo were cousins by marriage....but yeah I haven’t gone there yet. Probably never will.
4. Working as a maid - Will never do one of these stories. EVER.
5. Girl pretends to be a guy - or this. EVER.

Keep in mind that cliched plots aren't necessarily a bad thing. I think these cliches should be the foundation of a plot, something one uses to build on and personalize. Some of my favorite Sekai stories and Krislay stories both involve amnesia, yet they're so different, both from each other and from other amnesia stories. My favorite Baekyeol story is about best friends falling in love.

However, if the cliche becomes your whole plot, we have a problem.

Cliches are alright if someone can pull it off. By pulling it off it means, your readers won't be able to guess what will happen in the story next. ;3

Love at first sight is also terrible, because to me love at first sight = LOOKS LOOKS LOOKS <3
Also, popular girl(s) hating you (who is almost always a part of SNSD i d k why), which leads into kingkas and queenkas and I still dunno what the 'ka' part means, jerk with heart of gold, main nerd girl pulling off glasses and getting new hairstyle and BAM GORGEOUS (wow this one is so overused in fanfics I can't even-), et cetera et cetera

Your cliche plots fit into your story because you make them entertaining and interesting to read.
