appearance: having long hair is an absolute blasphemy for her, as she sees that it gets in her way during work. she prefers to wear khaki shorts or baggy cargos at work, along with shirts or tanktops that are in annoyingly bright colors or weird patterns. she refrains from wearing any jewelry except for a silver chain with a tiny bear charm on it (a gift from her mother). canvas trainers or boots most likely picked up from an antique store are the shoes you'll usually see her in. despite her boyish appearance, she has absolutely nothing against wearing girly items and will without any compelling, although freakishly amplified high heels are the exception. regularly she'll wear loose shirts and jeans/shorts, not too interested in looking fashionable.

background: born and raised in the bustling party city of shanghai, lanying was exposed to an array of ideas from a young age. her mother being a teacher relocated from south korea to china, she met her father at the primary school she taught at, where he was the history teacher. growing up with an academic influence, she was expected to go into a promising career that would support her once she grew up. and although there was a time during her teen years when she rebelled against that, common sense (and a not-so-gentle push from a childhood friend) led her in the right direction. ever since she was little she enjoyed to run around and explore, a notable experience being when she lookt he liberty to go 'investigate' the 'creepy fish shop' near her house, which is where she met one of her closest friends, zhang yixing. although they were enemies at first (since she insulted the unicorn drawing he had posted on the counter), they quickly grew close and became partners in crime. to her family, he was like the son they never had, and vice versa with the zhangs.
once graduating from school, she made the plans to study abroad in south korea since it seemed like such an interesting place. she managed to convince yixing to come with her (being the very agreeable person she is), and the two of them settled down in seoul not long after. while staying there she met hyoyeon (a teaching major) and sooyoung (a literature major) looking into a double major for teaching and geology, she started to find interest in rocks and thd fossils and clues that are often inside of them. after volunteering at a dig, she met one of the members of the team (sam, you can choose who, i don't have a preference) and got recruited. now she works as an analyst with the team.
personality: the most common word used to describe lanying is 'eccentric' (and that's mostly reserved for people who don't want to be rude and call her weird). with an imagination that wanders and crazy ideas, she calls herself the specialist of her team simply for the reason that she often uses her random ideas to help people out of situations they're in. sneaky, she's constantly sniffing around anything new to spot out anything somewhat interesting. but despite this, missing something in plain view isn't uncommon with her. she's known for not being very sentimental- if you gave her something disposable that was meant to have a really deep meaning, she would most likely throw it away sooner or later. with that being said, she is unknowingly rude more often than not, and other times she is rude on purpose. but with the latter, she's usually just trying to make a joke that ends up being snarky or offensive. a skeptical being at times, she doubts the abilities of her and her teammates a bit too much for her own liking, and will point that out by making the funniest remark she can muster. the allover thing with her is that she likes to make people laugh. whenever there's the opportunity to make a joke, she cracks it no matter how vulgar or unneeded it was. a bit of an egoist, she often talks about herself being on top of the world (even though most of her friends end up setting her on the bottom of the food chain). that along with her annoying tendancy to never shut up end up making a lot of people shy away from her or quickly get fed up with her antics. but an easy way to get her quiet is to give her something to do. if something is assigned on her part, she'll get it done to the best of her abilities. and although a lot of people call her childish because of her disposition, she likes to think of herself as a smart individual. mostly because of the innumerable things and possibilities to any situation that she'll think of, but not for much else. a curious and adventurous soul, she's (mostly) willing to do anything for the sake of the thrill. but being a prideful creature, she doesn't take criticism well, especially when it actually applies to her. on the other hand, she loves competing with people and will do almost anything to start some sort of race or competition with her company. a social person, being left alone is one of her least favorite things and she's known to make friends with practically anyone when put on spot.

family: oh hyeri | 42 | alive | mother | english teacher | a silly, creative woman who passed most of her humor onto lanying. she loves nothing more than to make people laugh, and her students appreciate that more than she could ever fathom. she isn't too strict with lanying, but pressures her to get good grades and make a promising future for herself.
chen xiaoli | 47 | alive | father | history teacher | much more no-nonsense than his wife, his quiet and more plain personality levels out the amount of crazy in his family. he still knows how to show affection, but is much more awkward about it and doesn't really know what to do. stern in his raising of lanying, he might end up being more harsh than he intends to be- he just wants to get his point over without misunderstanfing.

love interest: kim jongin | 20: upon first glance you wouldn't think that jongin has much personality due to his somewhat stony exterior. a 'little brat' (as dubbed by his older sisters), he is actually quite mischevious and silly once he gets to know you, as he only opens up to people he trusts. although it seems like he'd be some sort of 'y beast', he's not in the least. he's just a sulky kid who is lazy and sluggish the majority of the time. but he has a weak spot for exploring and getting himself into potentially dangerous situations, during which he'll act like a cocky bastard. in reality he actually doesn't know what he's doing but he really likes to act like he does. having a problem explaining his emotions with words, he prefers to resort to actions to tell his feelings. he usually uses one or two word expressions when he's too lazy to explain physically (aka, "tired." "hungry." "bored.", and those happen to be three of his favorites).
jongin and lanying love nothing more than to annoy and tease each other, with usually results in laughs for the whole team. when they're not doing that, lanying tries to keep a steady conversation with him, but that doesn't ever really end well, being that he might conk out when she goes off on a tangent. behind all the generally brother-sister relationship they have, they do care deeply for each other but rarely show it.
actually meeting at her school, he first noticed her when she introduced herself to the class as chen lanying. he misunderstood her and blurted out "chen linglong? so you're chinese?", to which she replied with "LANying, kimmy. get it memorized!". after that they would tease each other with stupid nicknames and the such during class. most people in their classes would refer to them as 'the two dunces' who provide the majority of laughs during lectures.
back up: jung ilhoon | 21 : it's hard to put words to ilhoon's personality; especially if you're planning on using a word other than 'troll'. sarcastic and jeering, there's nobody better at making people feel bad about themselves than ilhoon. with a sharp tongue and an arsenal of insults, you might have the urge to punch him the majority of the time that you're around him. awkward when it comes to actual relationships, he prefers to friend zone everyone he knows and create a bubble of isolation around his heart. a show-off, you might think that he only has bad personality traits at this point. but there are some gold traits in there somewhere- you just gotta dig deep. really really deep.
you could call the relationship between ilhoon and lanying love-hate, as they annoy the out of each other as well as being near-imcomplete without the other. constantly teasing, bad-mouthing, and being just plain mean, most people would either call them crazy or bipolar when they're spotted sharing ice cream with each other happily. the truth is simply that you can't have yin without yang, right?
they first met when lanying had been chewing an obscene amount of bubblegum when she was out on a walk with chao, spitting the giant glob out on the patch of pavement that ilhoon stepped in a second later. she wouldn't have noticed if it weren't for the hissy fit he threw once his foot got stuck to the concrete, after which she had to scrape the gum off his shoe and do his history assignments for a week as recompinsation.
requests?: a scene where lanying had been teasing jongin about his one-word answers to everything, mocking him by answering him in the same matter. they end up having a conversation just by talking like that until lanying blurts out "love" and she has to explain what she meant. (and you and i both know what she was talking about- i mean wat that is so freaking corny and stupid what am i writing)
