1000 Year Always By Your Side: Meanings

After carefully analyzing several components in this video, I have come up with a few meanings to some possibly key things I noticed throughout the video. Stay tuned and hear my thoughts out?

At the start, we see the five shinigami (or death gods) with a line of souls waiting to board the bus to Heaven. One of the shinigami then realizes that the last man in the line just recently died and they had seen him before. The music video tells of a happy family of what seems to be circus clowns. The boy seems to have contracted some kind of disease that is fatal to him, limiting him to his last days on Earth. The video then replays some memories of the family laughing and smiling together, creating a heartfelt aura to the video. The boy’s father desperately tries to get his son to smile again, but the son refuses to be happy knowing his condition.

We then see the father watch as his son is rushed into the operation room for surgery. He then seems to be talking to some people before running off. Near the end, we see the boy has successfully gone through surgery and awakens to an outpour of balloons, making him smile again. Little did he know, his father had just died in a circus fire, taking his son’s place in Heaven. The man then boards the bus to Heaven, only looking down to fist bump his son once more. The shinigami then salute the man for his great deed.

Some things I noticed:

  • The five black cats are actually the five shinigami. I believe that shinigamis visit people who are dying and watch over them before they die.
  • There is a seen where the father is trying to cheer up the boy. He is actually pretending to blow up a balloon.
  • The items the shinigami are holding. Here is what I think they stand for:

Onew – cane: Sometimes you need a little help in life. Like a cane helps a person walk, others can help you.

Jonghyun – watch: Time is a precious thing. It’s always good to keep track of it.

Taemin – umbrella: Sort of like the cane. On the rainy days in life, there will always be someone to hold an umbrella out for you. There is a silver lining to every cloud.

Key – album: Memories are a precious thing. Look back on the past and reminisce those memories.

Minho – ball: When life gets hard and there’s nowhere to turn, look for a distraction. Forget about the hard thing and live life easy.

         -   The scene where we see the father try to pass through a group of people. The             people are actually the shinigami coming to take the boy’s soul to   Heaven.

The father then makes a deal with the shinigami, asking if he could take his son’s place. The shinigami agree, and he asks if he could wait to say good bye. They then respond with a no. Not knowing what to do, he runs off to perform his last act of kindness for his son before leaving the Earth. Just like when he once blew a fake balloon for his sick son, he can now shower his son with all the real balloons he could ever want.

  • A hidden meaning behind the balloons that I think: It’s like saying, lift up your spirits. Be happy!
  • In one of the scenes, there are two spiraling staircases behind the father. I believe those to be staircases to Heaven possibly?
  • I also just realized that Key also wears a set of keys on his shoulder… I think that may just be a pun for his name or it means that he holds the key to their memories together.
  • Another thing I realize that the father carries that suitcase around with him after he releases the balloons. I think it may mean he is lightening his or his son’s burdens?
  • The glowing hearts: they’re giving they’re hearts away (like in the song lyrics, get it? My heart is yours? No? Okay…)

Something that I thought was weird is that everyone kind of… ignores the father? Which makes me kind of wonder if there’s a possibility the father is already dead and he is just coming back to try to get his kid to be happy again. Eventually he runs out of time and the shinigami are just kind of hounding him about it?

The twist to the story?: The shinigami were expecting the boy but the father was the one to arrive.

Overall, I think the theme is to just live a happy life. Be happy with what you have. Think about the people around you and be happy because someday they may no longer be there for you.

UPDATE:

So the real plot from what I have investigate...

The father died in an unforntunate accident and comes back in an attempt to help his son overcome his terminal illness through joy and laughter. His soul comes back to the boy because he has come to complete his last deed on Earth before leaving. The shinigami are watching over the man because he has a limited time of 49 days to complete such task. Soon time is running out and in a last attempt to make his son smile, he unleashes an avalanche of balloons from a magical suitcase. He then happily leaves the Earth, boarding a Heaven bus protected by SHINee's hearts.
