Perseverance

I write this while thinking of a friend of mine who I know is having a hard time with stuff. No need for names so they know who they are.

Perseverance, why do so many give up when they've only just begun? What motivates one to continue on in the challenge and what stops people from pursuing theirs even further?

There's no right or wrong answer to why people stop writing, singing, dreaming it varies from person to person. Sometimes the person was chasing after something that they really did not desire, maybe they got tired, maybe they didn't think it was worth it in the end.

If you want a good example of people who didn't give up compared to the thousands who throw in the towel then we could be here for a while. The paralympics would be a good place to start, all of the people started from broken dreams or dreams they felt almost were impossible to reach.

But for the sake of this being relevant I will stick to a group that people on here know well. The stars of the Korean pop world.

All of them had a humble beginning, some starting with almost nothing, some with the desire to become famous. If you want examples of those who had not a lot you could say U-know from DBSK, Jokwon from 2AM and Sunye from Wonder Girls. For those with more priviledges Changmin from DBSK and Siwon from Super Junior.

But no matter what their social class they all started from the bottom and those who were able to keep up, didn't get sick, in scandals etc were able to debut and become one of the many numerous faces of Korea. To me there's no such person as the 'face of' a particular country because there are too many people to just decide one.

As time goes on and more groups debut, those who have been around for a while become more popular and they win at least a few awards at the music shows. So no wonder that there are groups or members in particular who suffer from 'celebrity disease/complex' which is essentially:

A disease that makes a person think that everyone that surrounds them is looking at them and/or they're better than everyone, its quite a fatal disease if left untreated due to the fact that it would most likely cause another more fatal disease which is called "douche" or "douchette" for a girl (source: Urban Dictionary)

Even the nicest ones in front of the camera on variety shows may end up being sick with this. It's no joke, fans are smarter than people think and those who see the real idol can tell if the person suffers from this or not. It isn't about destroying the tall poppy syndrome in them, I'm pointing out that not everyone feels the need to keep improving if they are already famous and widely acclaimed.

But then you have groups like MBLAQ and U-KISS who in my eyes are the epitome of perserverance in the kpop industry. MBLAQ though are all talented whether it be vocalist G.O down to rapper Mir yet their success on the music shows is limited. No wonder they have to get Joon to work hard through variety and acting in dramas and G.O on Immortal Song 2 they have to persevere to keep up with the other groups that may be getting more popularity for whatever the reason.

And U-KISS, though I'm a Cassie/Inspirit my heart really aches for them. U-KISS for whatever the reason have not won a single award on a music show. If the shows weren't a big deal then it wouldn't matter but it's all a competition there and to win means that they are considered valuable to the industry in Korea and there's something about getting the trophy which a lot of people may not understand, but for them it's their Holy Grail. On their cameo on Strong Heart they pretended to win an award and something about it really saddened me just how emotional they got for a pretend award. A lot of kpop stars seem to accept the trophies half hearted after winning them a lot but for U-KISS it's still out of reach.

Yet, they don't give up. They keep working hard to spread Kpop all over the world, getting recognition in places such as South America and other parts of the world. I listen to a lot of groups but out of all of them I have the most respect for U-KISS because of their attitudes despite the situation. They don't seem to complain or grumble, they strive to keep doing what they do.

My main point is, if these people didn't give up then what's to say that we can't do the same? Yes it's hard, the challenges are always there to be a nuisance and it's easy to be discouraged. The race has to be run if you want to win and you can settle for less if you wish but then you may regret not going the whole way.

Don't give up. You can do it.
