Idol Slant Episode 1 - My First Love Part I: Lee Sunkyu

I decided to start blog-posting about my opinion on different K-Pop idols/groups (from those I like to those I dislike). It's purely my opinion on them. It's almost like a rant, but not quite. I just felt like doing it, for the funs xD This is also a way of improving my writing and my English.

This is my opinion and I understand that there are different P.O.V, depending on the person.

Enjoy and give me you opinion/feedback! ^^ Thank you

Lee Sunkyu a.k.a Sunny. This is the name of my first K-Pop love/bias. I say love, because I totally love this girl. I can almost say she’s like a role-model in many ways (an idol role-model of course).

The first K-Pop song I ever heard was “Gee” (along with “Sorry Sorry”, but that’s another story) and I immediately fell in love with Sunny’s voice. When I saw the MV, I was told one of my friends “That’s her, she’s my favorite, I just know it.”. And I was right. As I began discovering K-Pop (and, in this case, Girls’ Generation), my admiration for Sunny only grew. I can honestly say she - as an idol and a person under public scrutiny - never disappointed me. Let me explain: sometimes, when you like an idol so much, you have a certain idea of him/her and when he/she does sometime that, supposedly, goes against his/her norm, you might feel a little disappointed with an action he/she did, something he/she said. Well, never happened to me.

First of all, let me just say I admire this girl: she started as a trainee in a relatively small company for five years, then she was transferred to another company, where she was supposed to debut in a duo – which never debuted – and, in 2007 she was transferred to SMEnt and debuted as a member of Girls’ Generation. She was the last one to join and debuted in the same year as she was transferred. It takes a lot of effort.

Sunny has a great public image, from my point of view: she’s very smart, eloquent, funny, nice, cute and beautiful. Yes, beautiful. I know many people think of her as one of the “ugliest” (how I hate this word) girls in Girls’ Generation, but not for me. It might be my bias-self talking – after all, this is all about me ranting about my opinions towards idols – but for me, along with Tiffany (I’ll talk about her later), Sunny is one of the prettiest members of Girls’ Generation and – if you don’t mind me being bold – one of the prettiest idols. Again, this is purely my opinion and I understand that there are different opinions.

Not only she is beautiful, she has an enormous talent. It’s only a shame people don’t recognize her like a truly talented person, rather than the “cute one”. But hey, this is purely my opinion. I’ve noticed that most of people that only listen to Girls’ Generation from time to time don’t get to see her full potential – and, it makes sense since Girls’ Generation promotional songs aren’t exactly the best songs to display one’s vocal ability. When can see that Sunny has a great voice in songs like “Finally Now”, “It’s Love”, “Your Doll”, “How Great Is Your Love”, “I Love You, I Love You” and others, especially ballads. While I agree that Sunny isn’t the best in terms of technique, she has one of the best voices in terms of range and, when she doesn’t use her “aegyo” voice, she has a really beautiful tone, pleasant to the ear.

I wish she would practice more her technique though – this is not entirely her fault, of course, it depends in the singer, but also the company and the time he/she has to practice, among other reasons. Her biggest problem relies on breathing and being able to sustain a note, especially in dance tracks. Also, her voice isn’t exactly made for lower ranges, and while I simply adore her lines in “Tell Me Your Wish”, I think it was a little too low for her range. Nonetheless, I simply love her voice and just hearing her sing makes me smile.

Sunny is perfect for variety shows. She’s funny and smart, she knows what the audience wants and she knows how to make people laugh and be interested in her. If it wasn’t the case, she wouldn’t be the only member of IY Season 1 present in Season 2 – I’m sad she left.

Not only in variety shows, but also hosting programs, Sunny has proved she has talent. First she was a co-DJ with Sungmin in Chun Ji, then she co-hosted “The M” with Hyungjoon and later Seulong and now she’s the host of “Music Island”.

In the acting department, she’s also doing well. The first time I saw her acting was during “Girls’ Generation’s Horror Movie Factory” and I never expect her to be so good at acting. Her voice acting in “Koala Kid” was good and cute; she made her character sound sweet but strong and determined. I only saw cuts, but I liked what I saw. As for her role as “Brenda Strong” in “Catch Me If You Can”, I can only say I was completely blown away. Projects like this really make the idols stand out and show what they are really capable of.

Changing the subject to something more on the romantic side, I totally ship Sunny with Sungmin (I’ll talk about him later). I just think they are perfect together. Let me get this straight: I started “shipping” them in a playful way, because they were my first two biases, from the same company and stuff like that. When I found out interactions between them and that they had hosted a radio program together, I totally spazzed my brains out. It was like a dream come true. Even today I get really excited when I see their names together. Recently my heart stopped twice: when, during a game in IY, Sungmin said he liked Sunny and later, during an interview for “We Got Married”, Sungmin said he would like to participate with Sunny. I would like that too Sungmin, I would like that too.

Well, I could stay all day here blabbering about Lee Sunkyu – believe me, I could – but I don’t think there’s the need.  She’s special. A girl like her is a dream, that’s what I think – if I was a boy, I would love to be her boyfriend, just saying.

Some funny facts:

-       Sunny and her sisters share the same birthday (May 15). There is only a 1 in 133000 chance for three siblings to share the same birthday. She’s really special right? :P

-       We share the same blood type *Crazy me trying to find similarities between me and her*

-       Her big chest made see that s aren’t evil xD

-       When I first saw her short hair, I loved it. After a while I just wanted to punch the stylist to put her some extensions, as I was sick and tired of that short hair. But I love her current hair length, she looks a goddess.

-       I also “ship” Sunny and Tiffany together. But it’s only for fun x)
