Ramblings

Ok, i need to get this out.

I'm sorry if it offends anyone, esp the non-chinese/non-mandarin speakers.

I've been reading fanfics for quite some time and there is this thing that's been bothering me for awhile now.

I know for Koreans and their culture, age status and seniority is really important. Hence, they call their older brothers/sisters noona, hyung or oppa and younger siblings donsaeng, even if the person is a stranger and not blood related.

However, for the chinese, we do not have this culture.

Noona = 姐姐 =jie3 jie3

Hyung/Oppa = 哥哥 =ge1 ge1

Younger Brother = 弟弟 = di4 di4

Younger Sister = 妹妹 =mei4 mei4

But!! We only use such terms with our family members! Blood related direct and extended family. I do call my older cousins jie jie or ge ge as an act of respect and to signfy our status difference.

However, we do not usually do this with non-blood related people, unlike the koreans. So, it gets really awkward and uncomfortable for me when fanfics about exo-m members includes all this ge ge, jie jie, mei mei and di di's inside. It's really cringe-worthy for mandarin speakers, at least for me. =/

But i guess, 不知者无罪。(The ignorant can't be blamed).

I am Chinese too but if you see that more often, you won't care if the fanfics got those words. I saw that often.
