Super Junior: The History.

Suju05twins.jpg

It all began on November 6th 2005, when Super Junior, a twelve member korean boy group made their debut on SBS Popular Songs,
with Twin's (Knockout). The group 'Super Junior' was only supposed to last a few months, before the members it held would break off
into smaller groups. This group was known more correctly as Super Junior 05'. On November 8th, Twins was released as a digital single, with
two more new songs making up the mini album.
The album sold 28,536 copies in their first month, which wasn't too bad for a rookie group, but their weren't as popular as DBSK, who had made their debut earlier that SJ. However, when the two bands collaborated in December 05, with Show Me Your Love, their popularity began to rise. The single was the best selling of 2005, with 45,000 being bought in the first month of release. However, the future for Super Junior was unknown, and even to the young members
things were confusing. Leeteuk, the leader, said "I wasn't sure what was going to happen to me, or my members. I wondered if I would still be in Super Junior in a years time. Everything was confusing."

In February 2006, Super Junior made a swift comeback with their now well known song 'Miracle.' The song had a happy vibe
with 'cute' dance routines and bold colours. The hair colours changed, as well as some of the appearances and Super Junior was
beginning to emerge as one of the bigger groups in the korean music world. It was an important step for them as a band, as it was later
confirmed that Super Junior would be staying as one big group, and was no longer a large trial run. "Miracle" was the group's first single to peak #1 in online music charts in South Korea as well as the music charts of Thailand, drawing interest from international markets. SM Entertainment
were pleased with the progress. However, they wanted more from the group. They began setting up Super Junior 02. This would be a band similar to Super Junior running along side to make more members, however this idea was abandoned the following month.

May 23, 2006. It was announced that Super Junior would be growing in size as an addition of one member entered the group.
Not all ELF's (Ever Lasting Friends) were happy with this idea, but were up to welcoming Cho Kyuhyun. He'd be found in a talent competition in 2005,
around the time of Super Junior 05's debut. He stepped into the group, and immediatey faced hostility not only from fans but from one member. Leeteuk.
All fans know he doesn't like new people really, but after a while warmed to Kyuhyun, and the two are now inseperable. Fans also welcomed Kyuhyun.

2 days later on May 25th, 'U' the groups third single came out. Fans loved it and is now one of the groups best known tracks.
It featured catchy rhythm and fast dance moves. Along with 3D music videos, the group had made a smash hit. With the addition the of
Cho Kyuhyun, the group was complete and Super Junior was officially born. They were now extremely popular and fans from all over Asia had
begun to love their music. "U" exceeded 400,000 downloads online within five hours of release and ultimately surpassed 1.7 million downloads, crashing the online server. The physical single of "U", with a total of three tracks, was released on June 6, eventually selling over 81,000 units in South Korea. The single became one of Korea's most popular songs of the year, taking up number one spots for five consecutive weeks on two of Korea's top music programs. By the end of the year, Super Junior collected over seven awards in five of South Korea's top music award ceremonies, and was one of the three Best Newcomer winners at the 21st Golden Disk Awards.

Later that year, the first of many sub groups, 'KRY' was born. The name KRY, comes from Kyuhyun, Ryeowook and Yesung,
the groups top vocalist and lead singers. With their wide range of musical talent, they were a ballad group, singing slow meaningful and more powerful
songs than the pop Super Junior were currently promoting. They sang 'The One I love' the theme music to KDrama 'Hyena' on Music Bank.

In February 2007, Super Junior T was born. It featured members, Leeteuk, Heechul, Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin and Eunhyuk. This group
was the 'trot' genre, designed to promote the 90's music, in a more modern and happy way. The group featured the more outgoing members, rather than the slower more peaceful members. Eunhyuk, Shindong and Leeteuk are famous for being comedians, and Kangin in turn is funny and outgoing. The group released 'Rokugo'  on 23rd February 2007.

April19th 2007 saw the darkest and bleakest time of Super Junior's career. Leeteuk, Eunhyuk, Shindong and maknae Kyuhyun
along with managers and production team were returning home from a recording of Super Junior's Kiss The Radio. The four were involved in a serious car
accident which left Eunhyuk and Shindong mildly injured, Leeteuk recieving 150 stitches to his head, and Kyuhyun in a life threatening painful situation.
It halted the activites for Don't Don their fourth single. The events of that morning still affect and haunt the minds of the members and it is something that fans remember every time they see them. Kyuhyun still has the scars to prove it, and has never shown them on camera, after having six broken ribs which pierced his lungs. His Father saved him from an operation that would have caused him to lose his singing voice. Kyuhyun thanks his Father for that every day. Leeteuk and Kyuhyun grew closer after this incident and all in all it made the bond between the members even stronger.

On September 20th 2007, Super Junior made their long awaited come back as one group with 'Dont Don.' This was contreversial song that sparked
different responses from critics. Up until this point Super Junior had been sweet, cute and funny, yet now they were coming with a strong, powerful and manly image. Fans loved it. The single sold over 60,000 units on the first day of the release and made debut at number one on the Monthly chart on September 2007.  The album itself went on to sell more than 160,000 copies by the end of the year, becomingthe second best selling record of 2007. Super Junior recieved seven nominations for Mnet Music festival and won three, one consititing of Artist of the Year. They then went on to collect two more awards from the 22nd Golden Disk awards, one being the Disk Bonsang (record of the year.) Their careers had taken off.

However, with good comes bad. Kyuhyun returned and along with him a fourteenth person. Henry Lau. 19 years of age. In the track Don't Don, Henry plays the violin whilst members Donghae and Eunhyuk dance around him. This sparked a lot of anger within the fans, who wanted to keep safe the thirteen. On the first performance of Don't Don, the eve of Kyuhyun's come back, fans rallied to chant about the 13. Henry was deeply affected and told SM he no longer wanted to peform but under strict orders he did, recieving hate via online sites such as Twitter. It showed how much fans wanted to keep Super Junior safe.

2008-2009 was Super Junior life changing year. Who knew that they were soon to be international super stars. In April 2008, Super Junior's third sub group, Super Junior-M, meing mandarin, set about promoting music within China. By this point Super Junior were extremely popular and appearances had changed a lot. The members were more manly, and had grown a lot. Hankyung, Siwon, Donghae, Ryeowook, Kyuhyun along with two new members made Henry Lau and Zhou Mi, made up the sub group. More anger was thrown towards SM at the welcoming of two new members. Super Junior was now fifteen, something that divided fans completely. Despite this SJ-M went on to become Super Junior's most successful sub group. They had two sell out concerts in Hong Kong and recieved numerous awards from Chinese television. The debut song 'Super Girl' recieved and nomination from the 21st Melody Awards.

A second sub group was formed shortly after in the form of Super Junior-H (happy.) Members of Super Junior T along with KRY member Yesung, made up the and released their first Single Cooking Cooking! on June 5, 2008. The band were formed to give out a happy, vibrant and playful vibe and helped cheer up those who listened to it. During this time Super Junior-T released the japanese version of Rokogo. That year saw Super Show, the first Asian Tour, come to the stage. Super Junior made a number of trips to different Asian countries performing their tracks to the millions of fans who came to see. In this time the name 'Sapphire Blue' took it's place in the hearts of many as Blue Light Sticks swarmed the concert venues. The concerts were a success, and all were sold out within a day. It was a chance for fans to get to know the real Super Junior and see them for the first time all together. The name 'ELF' also started here. The tour took about half a year, with the group flying away to perform for the humble and dedicated fans who came to watch.

Then came the break through. The biggest break through of their career. The point in which everyone around the world would know their name.
The arrival of their comeback single 'Sorry Sorry' was released for the public on March 12, 2009.  It was also their first album to debut at number one on the Hanteo Charts, selling over 29,000 copies the first day. After only a month of release, the album became South Korea's best-selling album of 2009, and ultimately sold over 250,000 copies in South Korea. It became the best-selling K-pop album in Taiwan,Thailand, China, and the Philippines, in which the latter credited the album to be the first korean pop album to reach number one in music charts from the country. Sorry Sorry became an instant hit, collecting a total of ten number-one awards for ten consecutive weeks in Korea, and stayed as number one for a record-breaking 37 weeks in Taiwan's K-pop singles chart. "Sorry, Sorry" achieved national and international success, and has since been the group's best-selling single in South Korea.[Sorry, Sorry won several accolades at the 24th Golden Disk Awards, including the Disk Daesang (Record of the Year). The fans loved it, even if the members thought it would be a single to be forgotten. International fans were beginning to listen. People from Europe, South America, North America and Australia were beginning to listen to the songs. The dance was posted on Youtube with fans single 'Sorry Sorry' over and over. Fanchants were louder than ever and international fans called out for kpop.

Just after the release of Sorry Sorry came It's You/Neorago. The story was based on the break up of a couple and had the members walking through the music video almost like a story. It was based more on the vocals but helped a catchy rhythm. The group performed and won four consecutive times with Neorago.

Supershow2.jpg

After the success of Sorry, Sorry, Super Junior commenced their second Asia-wide concert tour Super Show 2 on July 17, 2009 in Seoul. They went all over Asia. Tickets sold out within minutes, some even seconds. Online servers crashed and fans demanded more tour dates. Super Junior were rushed of their feet with work. Many were tired out but carried on for the fans. Japan, China, Taiwan, Malaysia all calling out for Super Junior and they went. They performed long hours, all with smiles on their faces. It was the biggest move of their life.

hankyung.jpg

During this time of their life, nothing seemed to be wrong. It wasn't until December of 2009, when chinese member Hankyung, filled a lawsuit against
SM Entertainment over human rights. Along with him nine other members also filled a lawsuit. Years before, DBSK had disbanded due to three members signing lawsuits and leaving SM. It was announced in January of 2010, that Hangeng would be leaving Super Junior to promote music in China. Fans were devastated and more importantly Super Junior had a huge knock back. Things had turned from good to bad in a month. Heechul, Hankyungs closest suffered the most and turned to drink to help him through it.

happy-kangin.jpg

In April 2010, Kangin, Super Junior's strong man left to do his mandatory army service, temporarily leaving Super Junior. The members were in shock, but
were happy for Kangin to do what he wanted in this time. His spot was left open and he has returned back hoping to begin his promotions for Super Junior 6th album, but nothing has yet been confirmed.

In this time it was also confirmed that member Kim Kibum would also be leaving the group, to continue his acting career in Japan aswell as
Korea. It was the right time for him to move, and he has had a thriving career. Super Junior was now 10 members. The fans were devastated aswell as the members and it only improved the bond between them.

Super+Junior-Bonamana.jpg

With only ten members Super Junior decided to release their fourth studio album. It was entitled Bonamana or Minah. It was a huge success and faired better than 'Sorry Sorry' in terms of selling, but was not thought too highly of by critics. Many critized SM for the lack of 'story' to the music videos and even fans thought it was too much like Music Video's before them. However, the dancing in the video and the vocals were modern and contemporary. Kyuhyun, normally a singer, was put in the dancing line with Lee Donghae, Shindong and Lee Hyukjae (Eunhyuk). It was good to see him in a different role. The album over 300,000 copies in South Korea, outselling Sorry, Sorry. The album remained at the top of Taiwan's Korean-Japanese Music Charts for 61 weeks, breaking their own previous record of the said chart.
