Basic Information...

Character Name: Kim Hyun Young | 현영
Nickname(s):

  • General Hyun ; 현대장님 ; Given by her parents when she was younger as her favourite game had always been roleplaying as a soldier. It kind of stuck with her as she grew up, still exhibiting qualities of a soldier even if she had been training to be an idol.
  • Baby Doll ; 베이비 돌 ; Given by her dad, back when he was still alive. Her father got it from his American friends when they were talking about their own daughters and loved ones, and decided to call her that. Donghae also calls her this from time to time, reminding Hyun Young of her dad.
  • Ahjumma ; 아줌마 ; Given by her fellow trainees or close friends. Hyun Young is a very traditional woman who even has some mannerisms of those from the olden times. She's additionally unintentionally nosy, kind of like the irritating old ahjumma you just can't hate.
  • Kimchi Young ; 김치영 ; sort of a play with her name, Kim Hyun Young. Given to her by her childhood friend, Cho Hyung Jae when he noted how she always asks for kimchi when they were younger.

Hyun Young has never been the type to dress to impress, she liked being comfortable and usually used loose clothing. Honestly, her closet could have been a guy's, filled to the brim with baggy shorts. loose tees, or polo shirts. Some were even for guys specifically. She's all about warmth and comfort, always donned in more than one layer of clothing. Hyun Young has always been a pretty conservative girl. Her favorite is the bomber jacket originally owned by her dad.

Unfortunately, comfort would never really cut it once you're an idol where every move you make and every fashion disaster you have will all be shoved to your face the moment you step out. Because she lets her pride get the better of her, she shoved almost all of her clothes out of her closet and put in new ones, more feminine than she would like, really. She has an odd affinity for hats now though.

Character Information...

Personality:

Hyun Young is possibly one of the most complicated people one will ever meet, which is quite ironic as she has always considered herself as an open book. People often tell her she's a walking contradiction, which to be honest, is quite accurate. Hyun Young is a feminist and is all about promoting girl power, but is easily irritated when a guy won't offer to pay during the first date. Hyun Young is a terrible little goody-two-shoes, but always seems to break her own set of rules. She is seen as the dictator from hell, but is about as sweet as a flower in different cases. Hyun Young is the ultimate girl-next-door, but can be as irritatingly preppy as your neighborhood prick. She is about as feminine as a lady can get, but still drinks and talks about soccer like a guy.

Hyun Young is, and would always be, a girl who can never be truly defined.

She takes after her grandmother a lot, being raised by her seems to have rubbed off the dual personality bit. If only slightly. Hyun Young is a very conservative young woman who is always ready to uphold the traditional ways. Hyun Young was often teased to be akin to the neighborhood ahjumma, always so old fashioned and quite meddlesome with other's affairs. She couldn't help it though, she was naturally curious about anything and everything that piqued her interest. Not to mention her motherly-instincts kicked in at the most troublesome moments.

Hyun Young thankfully inherited her grandmother's strength along with meddlesome persona. She grew to be independent rather quickly, used to the idea that her parents would never really be fully there for her and Yong Hee was not getting any younger. Despite her almost natural worrisome nature, she had always been a bit detached to others. Hyun Young doted on others a lot, but never to the point where they would be an important person in her life. When she realizes that she's growing fonder of them, she almost immediately stops and distances herself. She liked to keep to herself, scared of attachments and had a bit of an abandonment issue. This kind of situation was fine for her; she would be close to no one, she would be hurt by no one.

Hyun Young likes to put a strong face in front of others. She's prideful to the point that she dislikes disappointing anyone. She's a hardworker, that's for sure. She works hard in order to please people, and in a sense, is a perfectionist in that way. Flaws are almost absolutely unacceptable; she hates being embarrassed and tends to hold her head up high. Well, what can she say? Her parents had been people who put their lives for their country, she wanted to live up to their name. And that might possibly be her biggest weakness; everything she does is always for someone else. Though she claims to want something, to want to be someone, it is always for another person, whether it is to make honor her father, to do her grandmother proud, or to be someone her younger brother could look up to; everything she does is always for someone else.

But the thing about Hyun Young is that despite all her pretense and fears, she is about as imperfectly perfect as one can get. Hyun Young is raw and real - a far cry from the ideal.

History:

Kim Hyun Young had been an army brat for the earlier part of her childhood, never really having a permanent address, always moving about from one place to another until she was about ten. Hyun Young was the only child of two members of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces; her father in the army and her mother had been a former marine [she had retired when she had her second child, Jong Dae]. She moved to her mother's hometown in Nam-gu when her father had deemed that it didn't seem fair she couldn't grow up like a normal kid, she had been under the care of her grandmother Yong Hee ever since. Despite being miles apart, Hyun Young had kept in contact with her parents.

The years she grew up with her grandmother had been a very important time in her life, it was then she was introduced to the performing arts. As a kid, she had been taught to be a soldier; more or less to be a guy. Her grandmother had taught her how to be a lady. Her grandmother Yong Hee had owned a small bistro where the stage was free for anyone who had a voice. Yong Hee herself had come to sing that time she volunteered to help and fell in love with music, the song reminding her of her parents. It was at that time she tried out the performing arts as well, all with Yong Hee's support.

In 2006, her mother had gotten a maternal leave, causing her overwhelming happiness that the half of the set of her parents could be with her for the next nine months or so, along with a younger sibling on the way. It was also at that same year they received the news her father had died during a shoot-out with the rebels in Nepal when he had been deported on a mission for UNMIN. Her mother had officially retired the moment she heard the news and took over the family bistro instead.

Likes:

  • Coffee ; it keeps her awake and active. Not to mention it's a damn good medicine for drunkness and hang-overs.
  • Pets ; she thinks animals are adorable, okay. Dogs in particular.
  • Trot songs ; her favorite was Samba's Woman by Sul Woon Do. It was her dad's favorite song and reminds her an awful lot of her father.
  • Vintage anything.
  • Romantic gestures ; guilty pleasure, not like she'd ever admit that.
  • Sports ; being trained as a soldier had its perks, she's especially good at soccer.

  • Rilakkuma ; "But it's adorable! Just look at those beady little eyes..."
  • Respect.
  • Formalities.

Dislikes:

  • Skinship ; she's not all-too fond of the whole, touchy-feely thing.
    • Hugs ; to be specific.
  • Strawberry milk ; she doesn't know why, but she gets sick and throws up every time she has them.
  • Chocolate ; it makes her sleepy.
  • Bugs ; what girl in their right mind would like them?
  • Vices ; hypocritical of her since she's almost an alcoholic.
  • Technology ; Hyun Young is incredibly old fashioned, heck she had her first cell phone back in 2009.
  • Being left alone ; she has abandonment issues.
  • Imperfections.
  • Disorganization.
  • Airplanes ; she has an irrational fear of heights.
  • Violence ; her father had died in a shoot-out, violence isn't really something she likes to see.

  • Collects Rilakkuma items.
  • Watching Korean dramas.
  • Listening to songs.

    • Tends to talk a lot and gets really affectionate when drunk. Surprisingly, she lies best when drunk, everything she says would be a lie.

  • Does not leave her house unless she has her dad's old leather watch with her.
  • Says "Aigoo~" when she messes up unintentionally.

  • Hyun Young has a high alcohol tolerance and she actually drinks at least a bottle a day, despite her not liking vices.
  • She does not have any piercings, not even on her ears.
  • There's a twitter under her name, it was made by Hyung Jae; @Youngstar88311. She didn't use it until she was set to debut.

  • Hyun Young is a Christian and has been noted to be quite religious.
  • She has never had a boyfriend before but has gone on plenty of first dates.
  • Hyun Young has an irrational fear of heights that everyone knows about
  • She gets motion sickness fairly easy. Donghae usually teases her with this information, but still sits with her during car rides just to make sure she's fine.

Does your character use profanities?: [  ] yes, [  ] no, [ x ] sometimes ; only when very, very drunk.

if so, in what language?: Korean ; her favorite is "Gae Saeki [개새기]" meaning "son of a "

Social Life...

Family

Eomma

Name: Kim Se Yoon
Age: 47
Birthday: o4 | o5 | '65
Personality:

Se Yoon is a strict, no nonsense kind of person who is the very definition of a commanding woman. "Once a marine, always a marine"; and Se Yoon was proud of who she was, even after her retirement. She believes in discipline and respect, always wanting and knowing what is best for her kids. Se Yoon is often the very definition of a beautiful cold-hearted woman. She had taken over their family restaurant and rules with an iron fist, both making her loved and feared.

Relationship with your character:

Ever since Hyung Seok's death, Se Yoon and Hyun Young's relationship had taken a turn for the worst. Se Yoon was a marine; and once a marine, always a marine. There was just one problem, Hyun Young was her daughter, not one of her subordinates from the navy, it was just kind of hard to remember that. Se Yoon is sort of awkward with Hyun Young, always thinking that she had been a horrible mother to her first child; heck, she pushed the responsibility of Hyun Young to her own mother. Se Yoon always think she lacks a certain bond with Hyun Young, and though the girl feels the same, Hyun Young knows that her mother just cares for her.

Dead or Alive: Alive

Appa

Name: Kim Hyung Seok
Age: 41 [age of death]
Birthday: o5 | o4 | '66
Personality:

Hyung Seok was the very definition of a good soldier; disciplined, stern, and just. He was one of the most feared and admired soldiers in not only his cluster, but also in the army in a whole. Thankfully, Hyung Seok new the boundaries between his work and his family. He always did an almost 180 degree change whenever it would concern his daughter; he became the dorky dad any daughter would have wanted. Despite his rough persona amongst his fellow soldiers, Hyung Seok was very affectionate with his family, often always caring for their well being rather than his own.

Relationship with your character:

Hyung Seok had admittedly never been the best dad, he was never there whenever it truly mattered like her first real day of school or her grade school graduation - but he had always supported her through every little thing. No matter what she chose, whether it would be to become a soldier like him or an idol star like those she watched on tv. Hyun Young was his little princess, and he lived every day trying to make her proud of him.

Dead or Alive: Deceased

 Siblings

Name: Kim Jong Dae
Age: 4
Birthday: o8 | 28 | 'o7
Personality:

Jong Dae is the typical kid, he just likes to run around and have some fun. At times it can get pretty annoying, but more or less, it's still pretty adorable. Hyun Young's little brother is a typical guy though, always trying to play tricks on everyone and has no real concept of "there is a time and place for everything". Despite this, he's all in all a bright ball of sunshine that you just can't not love.

Relation to your character: Younger brother.
Relationship with your character:

Jong Dae and Hyun Young have a 19 age difference, almost two decades, and despite the fact that she loves her little brother to bits, she really just cannot connect well with him. Hyun Young is a grown woman, and Jong Dae is barely even in pre-school; it does actually get a little awkward when people tend to look at her and see them as mother and son. No matter what though, Jong Dae is still a part of Hyun Young's family, and she loves him with every fibre of her being.

Dead or Alive: Alive

 Others

Name: Ahn Yong Hee
Age: 71
Birthday: o7 | 16 | '40
Personality:

Yong hee is a very classical woman who, despite living in modern times, acts as if it was still the 40s. She's quite a traditional woman and has rubbed off on Hyun Young quite a bit. She has two sides to her. First, there is the strong, independent feminist who owns a bistro in Incheon and will never step down from a fight where what she believes in is at stake. The second is the loving, gentle grandmother who does whatever she can to support her family through and through.

Relation to your character: Grandmother, mother's side
Relationship with your character:

Yong Hee had practically raised Hyun Young and taught her everything she knew. Yong Hee was the reason for her passion for music and Hyun Young could never thank her enough for supporting her so much. Yong Hee became both Hyun Young's father and her mother when she had been shipped off to live with her in Nam-gu. Currently, Yong Hee is fighting with acute diabetes and is cooped up in the hospital. Hyun Young never fails to see her once a week and calls every other day.

Dead or Alive: Alive; terminally ill

Friends

Best Friend

Name: Cho Hyung Jae
Age: 24
Birthday: o1 | o1 | '88
Relationship:

People tend to say they're almost attached to the hip. Hyung Jae had been Hyun Young's neighbor ever since she had moved in with her grandmother. He knows every little thing about Hyun Young, down to the last habit, and is sort of like her older brother already. Hyung Jae likes to with how he "knows she's falling in love with him day by day", knowing that she always gets riled up when someone mentions how they would look cute as a couple. Their relationship is purely platonic, despite what everyone claims. They don't see much of each other nowadays though as Hyung Jae is currently serving in the army.

Close Friends

Name: Lee Donghae
Age: 25
Birthday: 10 | 15 | '86
Relationship:

Close friends | Noona-dongsaeng ; somehow, Hyun Young became like his older sister despite them having a bit of an age difference, with Hae as the older of the two. Donghae always connected with Hyun Young in some way, maybe it's the fact that they had both lost their dads at a younger age than they would have liked. Donghae is the only person Hyun Young feels comfortable enough to talk about her dad with, thinking that he might get her. He actually knows her family and has even visited her at her home a few times, he's actually quite close with her grandmother. Donghae became a sort of replacement for Hyung Jae as her best friend though, once he left for the army.

Name: Lee Sungjin
Age: 22
Birthday: 10 | 23 | '89
Relationship:

Acquaintances | Friends ? ; Sungjin and her had met when she had gone for the first time into Kona Beans for her daily dose of coffee where he had worked to help out his mother [and Kyuhyun's and Leeteuk's as well]. He was pretty shy and didn't really speak to her unless required to do so, but he had a certain charm about him. Hyun Young ended up becoming a regular, always coming in sometime between 8 - 11 am with the same order and he would always make it for her. They exchanged numbers when he asked for it a few months after her first order.

Name: Lee Soon Kyu ; Sunny
Age: 23
Birthday: o5 | 13 | '89
Relationship:

Close Friends | Love-Hate ; Sunny and Hyun Young have a bit of a difficult relationship as everyone sees them as enemies when really they just like to make fun of each other. They have a bit of a friendly rivalry going on somewhere there, but it's pretty minimal and pretty much a bit of an inside joke with them. Sunny is possibly the only one other than Hyung Jae and Donghae who is able to see the more emotionally sensitive side of her. That, and her drunk side, but that's another story.

Name: Kim Young Woon ; Kangin
Age: 27
Birthday: o1 | 17 | '85
Relationship:

Acquaintances | Oppa-dongsaeng ; surprisingly, they met through Hyung Jae as he had been serving the army with Kangin in his cluster. Hyung Jae had been really psyched and called Hyun Young immediately, telling her he'd introduce her the first chance he got. They somehow hit it off quite well, Kangin had liked her a lot, thinking she was a complete doll. He ended up being something of a protective older brother after that, their relationship is completely platonic though.

Name: Kim Taeyeon
Age: 23
Birthday: o3 | o9 | '89

Relationship:

Acquaintances | Idol-fan ; Taeyeon is someone who Hyun Young really admires; she can sing, she can dance, she can act on stage in front of hundreds, she can entertain, and she can lead eight girls to world-wide success. That is something Hyun Young could never even wish of doing. They aren't particularly close, but Hyun Young and her aren't really cold to each other either. In fact they're pretty polite and though still formal to the other, they can easily greet one another and exchange pleasantries.

Rival

Who is your rival?: Whoever will be the Lead Dancer/Musical Actress of Mosaic

Reason for rivalry:

Hyun Young had always wanted to act - but what she wanted was to act on stage. She wants to prove that she can sing as well as she can dance and act. It had been asking for too much, especially since her vocals were really nothing extraordinary and her acting still needs improvement, but Hyun Young still found it a bit depressing she wasn't picked to be the musical actress of the group. This doesn't really go anything beyond her work-life, though.

Love Interest

Love Interest: Lee Sungmin ; Super Junior

How do you two act around eachother?:

They're surprisingly comfortable with each other and treat the other like a friend, though are in no way close to each other. The closest relationship they'll probably say without lying is that they have a lot of mutual friends. Sungmin thinks that Hyun Young might be someone Sungjin likes and so likes to keep an eye on her like how an older brother would. Hyun Young still feels quite awkward when the topic of her relationship with him is brought up; they're not friends, but they're not just strangers either. They don't really interact much when other people are around and are more of a secret friends kind of thing.

What is your relationship?:

Unknown crush | Little bro's "girlfriend" ; Hyun Young had unconsciously began crushing on Sungmin the more time they manage to end up spending together. Hyun Young is horrible at anything concerning relationships that go beyond friendship, thus, doesn't actually think she likes him. Sungmin still thinks that Sungjin might like Hyun Young and therefore, just wants to know if she'd be right for his little brother.

Do you keep in contact?: [  ] yes [  ] no [ x ] sometimes

If so, how?:

  • Sungjin | Kona Beans ; Hyun Young goes everyday and at times, she actually catches him on duty. Though she gives off the kind of impression that she would be there to see Sungjin [well, it's not really Sungmin's fault he assumes that - Sungjin likes to talk to her the rare times she decides to stay a bit rather than buy-and-run], Sungmin still gets to exchange a few pleasantries with her.
  • Messaging | Petty, meaningless texts ; They have each other's numbers, but never really text each other. Mostly because Hyun Young thinks texting is a waste of time but also a little bit because she feels awkward texting a guy. The times they do message each other, it's usually meaningless texts like "Good morning", "Good luck!", "Have you eaten yet?", or "How are you?"

Scene requests:

  • A coffee date in Kona Beans after a rough day.
