background: The Jungs are an upper-middle class Korean family that are very close. Maeun’s parents are both successful, kind Christian people who have supported her talent since she was very young. Her mother insisted she (and her younger sister) be musically educated and her grandfather insisted Maeun should get extra training in other fields (economics, home planning, world affairs, etiquette, etc).

Her schooling is fairly generic (all public school) but she has better than average grades – she normally gets top ten in her classroom, top fifteen in school.

During middle school (when she was about 13/14), Maeun became very depressed and began to cut herself on her wrists/arms (like she had seen a couple other girls in her class do). It took her three years and some counseling for her to feel more in control and at peace, but the scars remain. This contributes to her desire to be supportive of others. She’s had some very negative reactions to the scars, though, and decided to not ‘put them on display’ and avoid talking about them unless she’s really close to the person. Her love life is very limited – she’s been on dates, but nothing terribly serious, and she is embarrassed that she hasn’t been kissed.

Coming from a more privileged home has made her mindful that others may not have the same sort of situations and made her more open to people from poorer backgrounds that didn’t get her education or upbringing.

family: Jung Minsup | Father | 47 | Maeun and her father are very affectionate and get along well, but he is a work-a-holic, so their interactions are usually brief.

Jung Haneul | Mother | 41 | They have a very close bond, but since Haneul was busy a lot when Maeun and Minhee were younger, Maeun took on a lot of motherly responsibility and they heads about what is best for Minhee. It’s the only thing they really don’t see eye-to-eye on.

Jung Minhee | Little sister | 16 | They were very close (inseparable) up until Maeun became depressed when she was 13. She pushed her sister away, causing Minhee to develop abandonment issues and give her poor self-esteem. Maeun takes full responsibility for this and tries to do everything she can to make up for it and can’t get rid of the guilt.

Song Hyunsuk | Maternal grandfather | 65 | Maeun is her grandfather’s golden girl and is expected to live up to his every expectation. She strives to do her best, but has been forced to get used to his “jokes” about her failures.

reason for entering the contest: Maeun enjoys new people and wanted to see if she could get her sister to interact with others, so she volunteered as a host.

personality: Maeun is the affectionate, motherly type. The thing she wants most in the world is to get along with others, even if it ends with her getting the short end of the stick. She understands now that she’s older that she has been very fortunate in life and wishes to extend kindness to others who haven’t had it as good as she has.

Her natural state is to be happy and look at the bright side of the situation. If the general mood in a room is a particular way, she’s more likely to go with it, but she gets distressed if she’s in the room with people who are angry or sad and she can’t do anything about it.

Unfortunately, the motherly aspect has a flip side: Maeun likes taking care of others and can become overbearing and bossy to dongsaengs. She is not affectionate to strangers and will only open up if she feels the person is receptive. She is unwilling to scold people she doesn’t know well, but if she feels comfortable with a person, she loosens up and points out things she thinks are wrong. If she thinks that someone close to her is not putting in effort, she gets annoyed and slowly simmers and gets angry.

Maeun is more comfortable talking with adults and finds talking to those around her own age to be awkward. Those who don’t know her well would call her modest and shy, while those close to her know her as bubbly and opinionated. She’s more comfortable around girls than guys (they make her feel shy and uncertain of herself), but does well at disguising her shyness if she’s in a group.

When you first meet her, Maeun might come off as very distant, cold, and polite, but that is her shyness. People who get to know her have to be patient, take their time, and be willing to stand her saying some rather awkward things. If she sees that she hasn’t driven people away with her honest and slightly strange, affectionate manners, she’ll let loose and be loyal to a fault.

hobbies/habits: Maeun enjoys sketching and writing short stories. She will bounce her leg when sitting, will speak up for groups if there are pauses of more than ten seconds, and smiles with only half when she realizes she’s made a mistake. She is an early riser and loves to cook for people. When she’s distressed, she’ll scratch at her inner arm and wrists absently.

dislikes: Having her weaknesses/failures made fun of, seeing others being laughed at, talking about her depression and cutting (she feels shallow and mellow-dramatic), having her affection turned down.

extra: Maeun is convinced that she can’t do aegyo and believes in “paths” – that everyone in life has a purpose and a meaning, but deviating from that creates unhappiness.

Fashion: Maeun usually dresses nice and takes care of her clothes and appearance well. (Maybe like this, if that helps explain it). She tries to keep her makeup as light as possible since she has a delicate complexion and gets breakouts as often as anyone else.

Extra things you wish to tell me: I tried to make Maeun a sympathetic sort of character, but she really does have trust issues and could very quickly become a villain/rival if she feels like she is going to lose a relationship – she’ll end it first to avoid being the one hurt. Worse thing is that she sees herself as a protagonist and probably won’t realize that she’s causing the conflict.
