Block B Controversy: My Thoughts

I hardly ever express my real opinions on K-Pop scandals/controversies, but I have to say this.

I will admit, in the beginning, I couldn't understand why everyone was being so harsh on Block B.

I even blindly defended them because I liked them.

I didn't even look at the Thailand Interview video.

But then, I saw how messed up everything was getting: The consideration of dropping Block B's "Free Spirit" concept, Zico shaving his head, the emotional and physical injuries, the false and inaccurate reporting from media sites, P.O being hospitalized, changing the choreography of Nanlina to a 90 degree bow, apologizing on Twitter, and the apology video uploaded by BrandNewStardom on Youtune.

And if you haven't heard, they were banned from the Music Programs as punishment.

That is a lot of apologies.

So I decided to watch the video for myself since I couldn't understand why people were so angry.

After I saw the video, I really cannot bring myself to say Block B is completely innocent.

Yes, they were extremely playful, and I'm glad they were being themselves and I don't want them to change theirselves.

However, I can now see why people were so angry.

They did go a little bit "over the top".

Even then, there is absolutely no reason to post such harmful comments.

“For doing their interview like that, Block B and their fans should all just jump off a cliff.”
“If you want to apologize, you should do it by throwing yourselves off a building. You’re not doing anything by shaving your head. This will all be over if you kill yourselves.”
“Who cares about him shaving his head, they’re better off just killing themselves. No one will know when they die anyway because they’re such nobodies.”
“How about you all just cut yourselves through the stomach and die.”
“Just die and delete your life, this is unforgivable.”
“Don’t think about reflecting on your actions, just disband and never come back again.”
“Can anyone give me the link to their suicide petitions?”

And even after P.O got hospitalized, the comments continued to get worse:

“Every morning, I check to see if Block B committed suicide. No news yet…”
“Go jump off the Han River. Nah… don’t do that, they’ll pollute the river then.”
“I’ll donate $6 to funeral services if the leader commits suicide.”
“Why are people sympathizing with him? You think this is bad, don’t yourself. Block B ers, just go kill yourself, I really recommend that.”
“You guys are ed now, I swear I will stick a knife in your stomach.”
“Cut off your .”
“Get your smelly asses out of my screen, you trash. I’ll stick a gas tank up your hole.”
“Let’s rip their bodies up and send it to Thailand as our apology.”
“I really want to stab them deep in the chest.”
“If they’re really sorry, they shouldn’t show it by shaving their heads but by shaving their brains with a chain saw.”

Block B didn't intentionally want to create such an atmosphere. They are kids and kids make mistakes.

I'm sure there is a great majority of people who have already forgiven Block B for their actions- the true BBCs.

The others who say things like "I'm no longer a fan of Block B" were probably one of two kinds of people.

1. They were never really a fan of Block B. I honestly don't believe someone can still be angry after the multiple apologies Block B has made... and I'm sure there may still be more to come.

2. They are Thai and were honestly hurt because they believe Block B were insensitive towards the flood that recently happened there. However, I've seen quite a few Thais who have already forgiven Block B, but there were also ones who said, "Don't come back here and stay in Korea."

I can tolerate and understand why they don't them to return to Thailand only a little bit... since the 7000 won story was actually a mistake. Zico never meant it in the way AllKpop had reported it.

And not to mention, Nichkhun. Although he did post about feeling offended about Block B's actions and words, he did later on also mention that he hopes Block B will learn from their mistakes- indirectly telling fans to control themselves.

I also heard that export contracts were terminated and/or halted due to Block B and Thailand's fragile situation. However, do you really think threatening them and bashing them will help the situation in any way?

And in addition, there are the people who say they tarnished the K-Pop reputation.

But think about this, "Aren't you tarnishing the reputation of your country and yourself by making these heartbreaking and harmful comments?"

I mean, really.

If Block B is really driven into a corner and really believed they should die, they might really suicide like you wanted.

And afterwards...

Are you really going to be proud of yourself you contributed to the death of 7 boys because they were trying to lift the atmosphere of the interview?

Are you really going to be happy that you destroyed the lives of 7 boys who really loved music and having fun?

Are you really going to be satisfied with robbing 7 boys of their smiles and replacing them with sadness?

If you made a mistake, wouldn't you want to be forgiven too?

Just because they are 'idols', they are still humans.

...and all humans make mistakes.

No one is perfect.

But in the end, I really want Block B to endure this and learn from their mistakes. I'm positive nothing like this would happen again if they make it through the tough time. 2012 started off pretty rough for them and I hope they don't give up.

“We have a dependable ally by our side... Their name is BBC. As long as they exist, they’ll always be by our side, protecting us. Together, no enemy can stand in our way, because we will win every battle. We’ll come back soon." - Zico (impromptu rap @ CBNU year-end concert)
