APPEARANCE
Gyeolhee doesn't think she's extraordinarily beautiful or anything, she never cared for her trying to enhance her beauty anyways. She sees that as shallow since she has so much more to offer. But she does have a double eyelid and a high nose bridge that can make her seen as prettier than some others.

FASHION
There's nothing fashionable about how she dresses, she wears the standard hanbok just like anyone else. Usually with no embroidery or decorations on it. She wears her hair in a long braid with a jebiburi daenggi on the end since she's unmarried. When she's teaching she wears a bokkeon since she is a scholar. She does make sure that her hanbok is cleaned at all time to maintain the appearance of a reliable and organized teacher.

ELABORATION
Intelligent: Gyeolhee has always been smart, everyone that knows her knows her as a genius basically. The way she talks might be hard for some people without education because she uses such big words. Many times she has to stop herself and speak more simply so she can be understood. But she does like to speak in sarcasm and see the confused looks on their face when they take her seriously.

Innovative: Her brain is always coming up with ideas and thinking about projects she can do to make the world a better place. Even for little things she is the one people go to for their problems they can't solve because she probably has a solution.

Confident: She holds her head high when she walks, not because she thinks shes better than others but because she is proud in herself and who she has become. She knows her worth so she wouldn't settle for anything.

Determined: Anything she puts her mind to she will do even if that means defying society norms. She will put all her effort intot things she believes in and if others don't support her it still won't stop her.

Independent: She prefers to work alone, especially through her ideas. She finds many people don't understand them and don't give good feedback or aren't intersted so she keeps many things to herself. She has no problem finding things out on her own or going places on her own either.

Logical: She looks at everything logically so she isn't good emotionally. She can speak bluntly without taking into consideration the others feelings but many times they don't understand what she's saying anyways so don't get offended as much as they should.

Compassionate: But when it comes to issues she wants to solve or unfairness, she feels for others and understands their struggles. It makes her want to change many things and stand up for the underdog. So she's not a robot, she's capable of emotions just not in a personal way.

Rebellious: She is so determined that she is okay with breaking rules and being sneaky or mischevious to find out information or get things she wants. All in the name of change and growth for the nation.

Cold: She can come off as cold because her face is often blank and she seems like she doesn't have time for you. But its mostly because she is thinking so much that she forgets to manage her face. Probably she isn't listening to the insignificant gossip happening around her and is in her own head instead. She rather be alone in her room than sit around and socialize over things she doesn't care about.

Opinionated: She has many opinions about everything from the government to political relations. She has no problem saying them too, especially before, over the years she got better at holding them back and knowing when to say it but there are times when she's so heated by what she hears that she has to say something. Instead of lying and saying she agrees she rather say nothing.

Reserved: She is very good at holding in her emotions and hiding how she feels so others don't know whats on her mind. Sometimes even she doesn't know how she feels. With all that vocabulary she still can't say what she's feeling sometimes. Maybe thats also why she seems so cold too.
DigDeeper
Her parents knew she was special from when she was a little tot. She talked faster than other kids and always wanted to learn. But by the time Gyeolhee was 5 her other siblings were born, 4 of them to be exact. Four fraternal twins that Gyeolhee had to help taking care of. She became her moms little helper around the house and envied the guys she saw go to school and learn because that's all she wanted to do.

She asked her dad to teach her how to read but he was too busy with work so instead her neighbor Yooseok taught her everything he learned at school. At first he didn't pay attention but since she wanted to learn too he payed extra attention just for her. So at the end of everyday Gyeolhee looked forward to him coming home and teaching her. And everything she learned as she got older she only taught her siblings.

By the age of 16 Gyeolhee was an excellent reader and writer. She wrote her own poems and loved learning more through scrolls she found in shops, eventually making her well versed in history, geography, literature, math, calligraphy, confusianism, and some sciences and law. At 18 she went to register for the civil service exam but turned away for being a woman, something that only inspired her to keep learning.

Gyeolhee thought there had to be more to life than taking care of children, she loved her siblings but hated how oppressed women were. It seemed normal when she was younger but as she got older she realized that it was the societal rules set by men that created such a system.

Instead of just falling in line and letting life waste her potential, she decided to share her knowledge with others. Starting with those who could change the world, the younger generation. She started with the little girls in her town, as young as 6 she taught them how to read and write. At first parents were apprehensive and not many kids showed up but word of mouth spread that she was a good teacher and eventually more and more kids signed up for her classes.

As her classes got popular, Gyeolhee tried to get government funding to expand on her successful business but was rejected. Instead her community supported her efforts and donated whatever they could to keep the classes going. On her days off, Gyeolhee and everyone included like Yooseok and her siblings took on jobs at night to support the school.

Fast forward 6 years and now she has over 200 students ranging from 6-15. Her younger siblings teach the children how to read and write, Yooseok teaches the older students subjects like geography and science, Gyeolhee teaches poetry, literature and confusianism and she got a few other to volunteer teaching some other subjects and electives. They even started serving kids outside of their town, by hiring drivers who take a donkey and carriage to pick up and drop kids off back home when they're done. At night they also started offering classes for adult women that wanted to learn how to read and write.

Gyeolhee is proud of what she's built so far, but she wants more. All her efforts have only been possible because of parents of students who willingly give some of their paycheck just so their daughters can learn and their secondary jobs that they had to get. Gyeolhee also read her poems at community gatherings and entered contests to win prizes that all went to school expenses. She doesn't just want her efforts to stop in chungcheong, her biggest dream was for all women across Korea to have free education. But she knew she couldn't make that change if she wasn't a high official but she couldn't be a high official since she was a woman. So when she discovered the beauty contest, she saw it as an opportunity for her to make Korea a better place.

JANG GYU KWAN
Gyukwan is your typical tradesmith. He spends most of his time at work and not much at home besides eating and sleeping. When Gyeolhee was younger he'd try to help her with her calligraphy and reading even though he was exhausted. She didn't spend much time with her dad throughout her life but him putting that effort to support her means a lot still. Even today he supports everything she does and he's proud of the woman she's become. Maybe times he's worked extra hours just to support Gyeolhee's school. He always says that she is the smartest person he knows and he's proud to be her father, so if she thinks the contest is a good idea then he supports her.

CHA SAE BIN
Saebin worries about Gyeolhee a lot, a very traditional woman that has no interest in learning how to read or write. She just wants her daughter to marry into a good family because in the end that's all that matters. It's not that she doesn't think that she's doing great but her pessimism only makes her think the worst about the future and to her the worst is that Gyeolhee dies alone without someone to take care of her. So instead of supportive she comes off as naggy and constantly worried. She thinks the contest is a great idea, Gyeolhee is smart enough to keep up with all those in power. She's just worried about how they'll treat her since she's not from the capital.

JANG CHO HEE
Gyeolhee chose Chohee to accompany her as a maid at the palace, not because she'd be a good one but because she thinks her school would be burnt down under her watch. Chohee is very lively, nosy and clumsy, she's probably the work pick for a maid because she can't cook and Gyeolhee has to clean up all her messes. But she wanted to take at least someone with her so she'll do. Chohee is looking forward to hte opportunity because she heard that the emperor is dreamy. She will be like an extra eye and ear to Gyeolhee keeping tabs on the other girls and the happenings in the palace. But who knows how good of a job she'd do since she gets distracted easily and is boy crazy. She thinks Yooseok is hot too and has no idea that they're smitten.

JANG DO HEE
Dohee is the more responsible sister. She teaches the little kids how to read and write along with Chohee but has no problem doing it on her own. She's more serious and bickers with Chohee a lot, they're total opposites. Which is why she can actually be trusted to do her job. She looks up to Gyeolhee and hopes she can truly change korea someday and she wants to help however she can.

JANG CHAE HEE
Chaehee is the eldest twin and helps Yooseok with teaching sciences. She loves conducting experiments and is like his assistant. She has an idea that they like each other and will be Yooseok's ear to confide in while Gyeolhee is gone. She supports them a lot and is actually married to someone who is a tradesmith like her father. So she's perfect for that kind of advice and is even expecting to give birth in the next few months.

JANG KWANG HEE
The youngest and only son, Kwanghee was spoiled rotten. He was the only one able to go to school and hated it. Instead of teaching kids he is one of the donkey drivers that picks up kids but he does help out wherever he's needed. He is yet to be married but he's currently dating three girls from different towns that are way too close to each other. He calls it keeping his options open.

WHEN YOU FIRST FOUND OUT THAT YOU'D BEEN ENTERED IN THE BEAUTY CONTEST, HOW DID YOU FEEL? I applied myself so I was aware, more suprised that I made it past the first round if anything. But thankful nonetheless. My looks were never something I originally paid attention to but good to know I'm well above average/

HOW DO YOU THINK YOU RATED IN THE INTELLIGENCE CONTEST? Perhaps in the top 3? I'd be surprised if it was anywhere below the top 10. I don't mean to brag but I do consider myself to be quite intelligent.

NOW THAT IT'S BEEN ANNOUNCED THAT YOU'RE ONE OF THE LADIES CHOSEN, HOW ARE YOU FEELING? It feels...bittersweet. I'm ecstatic to have been chosen but of course I'll miss my family back home. I haven't been away from them more than a few days before.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE THE SUBJECTS OF THIS EMPIRE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I must confess something before I go to the palace... I'm a terrible cook. I hope I'll at least be taught before having to cook for the emperor. I wouldn't want to make him repulsed at my cooking skills.

PERSONALITY
 ENFP, hufflepuff
(+) enthusiastic, outgoing
(–) passive, stubborn

outgoing: yooseok is really a happygolucky kind of person that can talk to anyyone and anyone will like him, especially kids. even when gyeolhee is being serious he would be playing with something instead and she has to take it from him so he listens.

enthusiastic: hes just that fun guy that you can't hate and finds the positive in everything and encourages others. he is very silly but don't let it make you question his intelligence because he is very smart. if anything he uses it as a mask sometimes to be seen as trustworthy and find out more information.

passive: he tends to be passive and not speak up for himself, usually the middle man in trying to ease tensions. but when it comes to people he carees about he'd stand up for them. he can't fight though and is pretty bad at comebacks but he'd try.

stubborn: most people would think he's a pushover but actually he is good at saying no. hes like gyeolhee in that way, when he wants something he does everything he can for it. for him he wants gyeolhee so he does everything for her no matter how much nagging his parents do.

BACKGROUND
Yooseok came from a normal common class family. His parents owned a restaurant and he has an older brother who was a low ranking military officer but passed away in combat when Yooseok was 15. Needless to say he had no interest going into the military or even learning anything with fighting.  He was more of a scholar but still didn't know what to do with his life until Gyeolhee gave him a purpose. Thankfully he has a younger brother to take over the restaurant when his parents get old because he seriously has no interest in that.
TheHeartBeatsForYou
FIRST MEETING
They were neighbors since they were born so they used to play together with the other kids. They got closer when Yooseok started going to school because Gyeolhee went up to him asking him to teach her so everyday he taught her what he learned. In turn understanding the content more himself. That's how they remained close because almost everyday for the next 10 years he was being her tutor.

LOVE STORY
Yooseok had a crush on Gyeolhee since they were 11. At least he realized it when he was 11. He was teaching her a difficult character to write and she stuck out her tongue as she concentrate. Yooseok couldn't help but whisper pretty under his breath. Ever since then it seemed like she'd sometimes do things in slow motion in the perfect lighting like she was an Angel that fell onto earth. But he kept his feelings a secret because he didn't want to ruin the friendship. Instead the two spent their days finding scrolls, reading stories and bickering over philosophical ideas and politics. He listened to Gyeolhee's poetry with hearts in his eyes and sometimes he'd go to her house to help teach her siblings. They were like two peas in a pod, they had dreams of becoming nobles together. Writing laws and changing the world one character at a time.

When they went to register for the civil service exam, Yooseok was eligible to apply but since Gyeolhee couldn't he changed his mind. He refused to take the test without her even if it meant putting his future at risk. His parents were pissed that he spent all that time studying to not take it at all. But he had to follow his gut, and his heart.

He went door to door asking people to sign their daughters up for Gyeolhee's school. Saying it was for the betterment of the future. They got a bunch of people for a week when he offered a free meal from his family's restaurant that got him smacked in the head by his dad. But as the business grew he stayed by Gyeolhee the whole time. The school is under her name but he's just as much of it as she is and she knows that.

There were times when Gyeolhee wanted to quit, she wasn't getting enough kids or didn't have enough money to pay the drivers. So many times of frustration that almost led to a breakdown if it wasn't for Yooseok to calm her down. Remind her that she was the smartest person he knew, smarter than all those noblemen and idiots in government and she could do anything she put her mind to. He often reassured her in ways like this. her hair behind her ear and whipped her tears that he hated to see, then took her to his parents closed restaurant where he proceeded to make her favorite dish. It was that moment that her heart skipped a beat for him, seeing how tender and caring he was. He was always caring but something was different, maybe it was the muscles she saw as he pushed his sleeves up. When did he get so fit? He was skinnier than her only a few years ago.

She tried to ignore her palpitating heart but the more she did the more awkward it became. She suddenly started calling him by his name instead of her usual nicknames and refused to get too close to spent too much time alone. She refused to make a fool of herself and even more refused to ruin their friendship with her deluded thoughts. But getting ignored by his best friend was killing him so he confronted her, didn't let her leave until she told him what was wrong; and she did. But not about him, told him her worries about the school, rambling on about things he knew wasn't the real reason. To shut her up he kisses her, and she stayed still with her eyes wide but didn't pull away.

The kiss marked a turning point in their relationship, a mutual understanding that the feeling was indeed mutual. They didn't talk about it though, just blushed when they saw each other the next day and acted like nothing happened. But at the end of the day when he dropped her home, Gyeolhee gave him a peck before going inside. Yooseok did a happy dance once she was out of sight.

For the next year they kept their relationship a secret, sneaking kisses when no one was around and using their days off to go on rendezvous to beautiful nature sights. They weren't ready to make it official because Yooseok wasn't stable, he wanted to be better before marrying her. A husband she could be proud of. But he still fantasized about the possibilities and knew it's what he eventually wanted. It seemed as if Gyeolhee wanted to as well, but she hit him with a curve ball one night.

The two were cuddling on the mat on the grass, looking up at the stars with Gyeolhee's head resting on Yooseok's chest. Both just enjoying the moment in silence, taking in the beautiful view and sounds of nature. It was Gyeolhee that broke the silence, "I applied for a beauty contest."

At first Yooseok couldn't help but laugh at the unexpected news, a beauty contest was so out of character for her. "Why? You don't believe me when I tell you you're beautiful? You want all of Daejeon to tell you too?"

Gyeolhee confessed how the competition worked, how if she passed it meant going to the palace and competing to marry the emperor. But made sure to mention that it could help her change Korea for the better, make her dream come true. Yooseok was taken aback, but it was soon replaced with anger. Was all this for nothing? Was he not good enough for her? She didn't have to go this far to change Korea, they could do it together somehow. Perhaps he was most mad at the fact that Gyeolhee was the perfect candidate and their was no way she wouldn't make it to the final round.

Their last date ended in a fight and every round Gyeolhee went through in the contest, Yooseok hoped she failed so she could stay his. But instead the opposite happened, she left leaving him in Daejeon and their relationship status up in the air. They didn't even officially say goodbye, Yooseok couldn't bring himself to face her and say all the things he wanted to.

ENDING
 Up to you.
