writer meta asks

from sangwoosgihun yet again ;))

Tell us about your current project(s)  – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?

- my current project is honestly genshintober lmao except i'm really bad at keeping up with it anyway. it's basically inktober but i hate the founder (he copyrighted the term inktober so anything that gets posted under the tag belongs to him >:(( ) and the prompts this year anyway so i found a genshintober prompt from last year and took it.

like i said, i'm very bad at keeping up with it, but my favorite thing about it is that i used a random wheel to pick with characters i'd be writing for each prompt, and it's given me some unexpected but adorable interactions.

- this isn't original writing, but i'm translating the earth is online (TEIO) from chinese to english. i do count it as writing because it's basically rewriting the original text in english, which takes up a lot of creativity and everything, so if you could go check it out and join my discord server i would appreciate it very much!

Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project.

- i think i just really want to get published lmao. that's basically it.

What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)

- there are... way too many lol. i have always wanted to write an epic battle scene, but i sort of at writing action LOL.

Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like).

- i refer to this story every time because it's one that i thought would get more attention but didn't and i'm mad about it.

"If love was a red string connected between two people, Changmin would have one, knotted tightly at the end, crimson on Jung Yunho’s ring finger. Yunho, on the other hand, would have the broken, torn, cut, faded ends of many shades of red all over his hands and arms. Around his wrist, his fingers, even up to his elbows. He would look like a marionette of love, manipulated or the manipulator, that beautiful slash of a grin on his face, reaching out with wooden joints and porcelain skin, and Changmin would still go with him."

"What do you do when you’re too deep in and can no longer remember yourself? He asks himself this, lying in bed one night, combing his fingers through Yunho’s hair as he sleeps. What do you do if you’ve poisoned yourself and can’t find the antidote? Do you stop drinking and accept your fate, or do you drink more because you’re dying either way?"

like come ON >:(((( toxic relationship as but i think i did it well >:)))

What character that you’re writing do you most identify with?

- the one i most identify with.

What character do you have the most fun writing?

- usually the non-pov character (unless pov character is super angsty and introspective) because they're usually comic relief/sassy and fun

What do you think are the characteristics of your personal writing style? Would others agree?

- i actually have an answer to this and it's because of a comment i got very recently-- actually jk it doesn't completely answer the question.

it's hard to judge your own writing style, you know? i try my best to paint the emotions as i feel them, which results in some weirder metaphors and pretentious word choices. i'm also (i learned these terms from class) a hella infolder, which means i focus on introspection more than actual actions, and that makes it so that i write more about characters than plot.

Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?

- yes. generally. personally i don't like writing or darker concepts, but i sure as hell read them a lot.

Are you more of a drabble or a longfic kind of writer? Pantser or plotter? Do you wish you were the other?

- how about we go somewhere in between and say oneshot? i count drabbles as <500 words and longfics as multiple chapters totalling at least 10k words. i usually write somewhere in the 5000 range.

- very pantser which is why i can't write long works, and i wish i could plot lol.

How would you describe your writing process?

- there is none. i can't write without inspiration, but when i have it, it's put down the words and go.

What do you envy in other writers?

- their plans, their characters, their uuuhhhhhhhhhhhhh lot of things.

Do you want your writing to be famous?

- yes.

Do you share your writing online? (Drop a link!) Do you have projects you’ve kept just for yourself?

- you can find a lot on here (i've drafted some of them, though) and a lot on ao3. you can also check out my translations that i've linked above (only on discord). i do have some ideas that i guard like a rabid dog because i can't stand the idea of them being stolen. even if someone else comes up with vaguely similar ideas to me, i get super jealous and angry (parts of june CL tan's jade fire gold were very similar to an idea i've been toying with since high school and man i LOST it lol).

At what point in writing do you come up with a title?

- depends. sometimes the title is the inspo, sometimes it naturally rises from the text, and sometimes i go back after i finish and throw some words together.

Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?

- tags for sure. i never know how to tag my stories LOL especially with the multitude of tags on ao3.

Tried anything new with your writing lately? (style, POV, genre, fandom?)

- i guess style? part of doing genshintober or any writing challenge is moving outside of your comfort zone. i've also been playing with the idea of different AUs but i ultimately decided that was too much work.

Do you think readers perceive your work - or you - differently to you? What do you think would surprise your readers about your writing or your motivations?

- everyone perceives things differently. i think smth that'd be surprising for sure is that, of all the comments i get that specify a part that they liked, they usually pick the lines that i HATED or struggled with for a long time and gave up on. i think ppl would be surprised if they knew how much those lines make me cringe LOL.

Do any of your stories have alternate versions? (plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations?) Tell us about them.

- i never... rewrite my own works? like i know ppl do that but i find it pointless LOL. abandoned/strayed plotlines, though, that's a common occurence. a lot of my fics started out one way, ended totally off-target, and i'm just like eh whatever that was what the story needed.

Is there something you always find yourself repeating in your writing? (favourite verb, something you describe ‘too often’, trope you can’t get enough of?)

- themes of religion and sin, home and never going home and finding a home, intimacy and consummation... i've also been overusing adverbs lately.

Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

- i do include a lot of... idk if it can be called easter eggs lol. for kpop, it's usually things that have happened irl (like smth that happened during a variety show or smth someone said at some point), and for genshin it's usually things that have happened in canon (references to events, the quests, etc) or headcanons/popular theories.

What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)

- i think in movie form, so.

Do you reread your old works? How do you feel about them?

- y e s. if it's not super old, i usually revel in the 'wowwww i really wrote this??' but if it's too old i prefer to, ahem, let the past be.

What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?

- god. there were a lot around the same time in hs and i just. but the first one is an eastern fantasy that i really wanted to write in chinese but ofc my chinese isn't good enough to write even essays much less creatively. it's also one of the ideas that i guard like a starving dog lmao but i don't even have a plot for it.

Would you say your writing has changed over time?

- the first few years, yes. nowadays, not so much.

What part of writing is the most fun?

- the finishing part of it. and the occasional comments.
