graphics advice?

i've dabbled a bit in graphics as back in high school a few years ago i attended a visual communication and graphic design class for 2 years at a career center. we mainly edited and created things using adobe software (mostly photoshop, indesign, and occasionally illustrator).  i'm wondering if those are most of the programs that people on here use to make  their graphics or if they are some others that are used as well like online sites or other apps since adobe is hella expensive if you're not using it through your school or job. also, where do you get your ideas when it comes to editing and making things.

I use photoshop to edit my graphics. I used to use Pixlr (an online editor) before that since I didn't have PS back then.
When it comes to ideas, in terms of creating posters for others, I make use of the summaries, genres, and other little tidbits they give whenever they request (does the story happen in a school setting? Cafe? etc.). That's why I always ask them to be as descriptive as possible when filling out a request form. Most of the time, a vague image comes to mind on what the poster would look and from there, I just play with it until the end / until I feel satisfied.

I think most people do use Photoshop for graphics that require "heavy" editing/manipulation. There's a few online graphic editors like Photopea which mimics Photoshop's tools/scale, and it's completely free. As for graphic ideas, I usually just look at movie posters or Pinterest for some ideas :-)
