appearance sihyun has always been envied because of her baby-faced beauty, even more so now as she's nearing her thirties. the soft smiles she greets others with and her straight fringes also cuts a few years away from her age. her milky skin is free of tattoos and she has a piercing on each ear.

while these days people try hard to save themselves first, sihyun is different. others first, self second. she expects nothing in return, content with only making other's people life better. she's genuinely there for you whether you want it or not. her altruistic side however tends to be exploitable. it attracts people both good and well, not so good ones. the more selfish ones are likely to take advantage of her and in sihyun's dictionary the word 'no' is near to non-existence, thus making it hard to refuse. although she may feel being treated unfairly or being used, she tries not to expresses it. she's exceptionally good at repressing her feelings when needed as not to burden or hurt other people's feelings. often, she spreads warm smiles and energy to cover the negative emotions, finding rays of sunlight shining through the rain.

despite having known by many people, not many really got to know her more than being acquintances or first stages of being friends. sihyun doesn't tell people things about her background. she felt it unnecessary to say it to everyone. and it takes more than just 100 questions to unravel byun sihyun. she's also one to withdraw from the crowd to settle herself, clear her head and have some solitude. it'll only take a while then she's back connecting with people again. byun sihyun is somewhat a perfectionist. her great attention to details sometimes forces her to work it out, thus making her work harder to silently meet her own expectations. it's either meeting those expectations or not start anything at all. she doesn't see it, but it often drains her as she overload herself easily. 

 

 

1992—it was one of the stormiest october nights when byun sihyun breathe in her first air. the ward's bright atmosphere beats the gloomy weather outside. her father, byun changmin a newly appointed police man, wasn't able to hold her because he was wet from head to toe having battled the storm on his way to the hospital. her mother, kye seri, a young aspiring reporter, managed a tight-lipped smile at his appearance.

 

sihyun is a balanced mix of her parents. she inherited her mother's brains and unaging beauty. she proved her intelligence by beating her classmates and students of her grade, climbing to the top ranks. she has her father's soft features and warmth. she was well-liked by people, always kept a humble mindset and never flaunting her achievements.

 

people say she grew up well; that her parents are blessed to have a daughter like her and had raised her well. but stepping into middle school, sihyun wondered whether her parents ever felt blessed at all and whether the neighbours had an idealized vision of her family—a perfect family inside out.

 

sihyun doesn't remember when it started; the relationship between her parents turning cold. perhaps it was because she's used to not see her busy parents interact much. used to being alone and wait for either parents to come home before retiring to bed. used to seeing her father appease her mother's irritated tone by letting an argument go with a tired smile.

 

2006—second year of middle school, she witnessed her mother exchanging intimate kisses with someone sihyun knew, a co-worker of her mother's, choi jiwon. she hid the fact to herself, assuring what she saw wasn't real. despite the churning in the pit of her stomach and restlessness in her when she sees her mother, she tried to be as cheerful as she is—if not more cheerful than before.

 

sihyun, just a naive teenager, tried to subtly pull her mother back and hoped what she had seen was a momentary drunken mistake or misjudgement by her mother. so she started blowing up her mother's text messages with everyday updates, often visiting her workplace and even planned her parent's wedding anniversary...which fell apart as her father insisted planning a wedding anniversary is getting kind of old. it was an unexpected statement to say coming from the romantic man who never missed any kind of anniversary related to her mother. 

 

sihyun learned that her father actually knew of her mother's stunt behind their backs. the father and daughter caught sight of each other when they individually followed her mother to her scene of rendezvous. it was weird, how both discreetly kept trying to check what they're seeing wasn't right when it was vice versa. how they still couldn't believe what they've seen and known. that night, her father broke down as they sat in the dim lit kitchen and apologized to her for being such a bad father—not able to settle things with her mother, causing sihyun to see the mess they've become. 

 

2007—third year of middle school, the cold relationship of her parents cracked and what was being kept inside burst out. one-sided arguments that her mother would usually win becomes a real, couple argument as changmin decides to finally speak up. her father ought to face her mother one day, sihyun knew. but still it did a number on her life. 

 

bothered by the thought of her parents on the verge of divorced, her grades slipped. her father tried to mend their family but her mother showed no attempt to cooperate. she soon neglected sihyun, too, and picks on sihyun's spiralling grades, sihyun's attempts to get her parents to make up and views sihyun too clingy for her age. 

 

feeling she was treated unfairly and subjected to her own mother's outrage, sihyun finally burst. it came to a point where kye seri confessed to sihyun, "it wasn't your father that i love. it was choi jiwon. always choi jiwon. is that so wrong of me?"

 

to which sihyun replied, after letting the confession sink and made the choice to stop wanting her family to be normal again. "you're hurting dad by going behind his back. isn't that wrong? but...i realized you're hurting yourself. why couldn't you just ask dad for divorce from the get-go? if you're not able to leave because you feel responsible for me, then i'm telling you to leave, mom."

 

2009—two years after, the scars were still raw for both sihyun and changmin. after all, her mother was the face people of daejeon are familiar with because they've seen her as the local news anchor. hence words about the mess her family has become spread like fire. even as kye seri left for seoul, sihyun and changmin had to deal with the rumours and speculations about seri's and changmin's divorce. some were easy to ignore while some rubbed salt to their wounds. in the midst of the rumours toning down, news of mother's remarriage came in a form of wedding invitation from seoul.

 

choi jiwon appeared infront of sihyun, asking for her blessings as seri's daughter. being her mother's cheating partner aside, jiwon has been nothing but nice to her. but sihyun knows it'll take a little more time to accept him as a person—let alone as a father. "congratulations, samchon," she managed to say and nothing more. she couldn't say she'd attend their wedding. not when her father still tend to punish himself for everything and resort to alcohol when he's free of his duties even if he'd pull a fake smile in front of sihyun. so she left after saying those two words.

 

eventhough she was hurt herself, sihyun tries to bring back the father she once knew—one that would celebrate the little things in life. this was the time sihyun started to find a simple dream to open up a bakery. she finds it rewarding baking for certain events. and her first event was to celebrate a new start for her father and, technically, herself.

 

her first cake wasn't anything grand, stacks of her father's favourite chocopie lathered in whipping cream. "mom had her new start, so why not you, dad?" she told him. "i'm always hoping for your happiness." 

 

2011—graduating high school was a new chapter for sihyun, she didn't go far for college, settling for a local college instead of the ewha women's university she had been aiming for—her mother's almamater. despite her father's protest of wanting her to go live a big dream, she didn't want to stray far from him as of yet. and she knows choi jiwon would reach out to her if she goes to seoul. her first love ended bittersweet but a new important male will eventually enter her life.

 

2012—her father decided to tie the knot with a widowed mother of two, an old friend who he eventually leaned on during the few harsh years. sihyun was happy, no doubt. but there's a little weight in her heart as she felt things would be different now. but she assures herself that if her father was happy, that's all that matters.

 

2021—she was happy. at least life has loosened up on her. she has a job she liked and saving up for the bakery she'd always dreamed. she's been dating for almost half a year. she was happy. but history thought it was already time to revisit and she finds herself standing on her father's shoes, listening for the second time what her mother had said before she left.

personality hui is an undemanding newborn who doesn't really cry unless overwhelmed by many people fussing over the baby. hui doesn't mind being in other's arms but it isn't easy to make hui laugh either, the soft baby smile and quiet laugh reserved for sihyun and changmin (soon a few mothers of together and im baekho). hui's lack of reaction / expressions worried sihyun at first but it doesn't stop sihyun to spend a lot of time with hui even if hui would simply stare at her with round eyes.

 

growing up, hui will come off as a quiet child but assertive enough to speak up his / her thoughts and feelings. a little guarded on first meeting but will approach someone once hui feels they're nice enough to him/her. 

 

relationship newborn hui and sihyun would be stuck like glue. like how she spent quite a while staring at hui's sonogram, sihyun will likely spend her time staring at the small newborn as it sleeps.

 

their mood seem to be in sync, one might realize. although sihyun slept less, but when she put hui to sleep, she slept along then woke up before hui. when sihyun is happy, she kisses hui and a shy smile would appear on the baby. when sihyun seemed stress, hui's hold on sihyun's finger would tighten.

 

hui will be sensitive to sihyun's mood and it felt like hui would be someone as loyal and comforting as hui is as her baby. one of the ways to calm hui down is by humming to hui's lullaby: galaxy or little star.

"this is its head, tiny fingers--ah, i told the doctor to keep the gender a secret," she answered when the interviewer asked the gender. "i named the fetus hui; in hopes that it'll have a brighter future, brighter days—better than mine."

 

"i..at first, i wanted to open a bakery myself--somewhere i could design cake that'll be a part of someone's specia day." sihyun's eyes sparkled at the thought. "but now, my first goal is to be hui's mother. maybe the rest can fall in place after that."

 

sihyun stared at the ultrasound, her thumb caressing it pensively. "i'm not quite sure how to answer this. i just—oh my god, what's wrong with me..." sihyun tilted her head up as she blinked rapidly to chase away the tears. she patted the back of her hand to her rosy cheeks, wiping the runaway tears. chuckling as she apologized, she continued, "being a mother meant to give love. because if you raised a kid with indefinite love, you'll never see the task as something you need to fulfill or as a burden. because if you love them, even when you're tired physically and emotionally, they are still everything to you--and you want to give everything to them."

 

"in the beginning, i thought this wasn't going to me affect much because i thought i've had enough support from my bestfriend and my father. but...now i know why ahrae-nim started this. there are a lot of single mothers out there and this will show them they're not alone. it'll also show other mothers that these single mothers are taking care of their babies without a partner...thus, you shouldn't complain about their children. they should treasure them..."

 

"i'm not sure." sihyun chuckles softly. "i can be helpful perhaps? hui is still in my womb so i can watch the other babies. but whoever will be, despite their backgrounds and personalities, i'll try to be a helpful housemate--to be a sister."

hello, hua! so glad to have you kick back the fic! it was a little difficult to revamp sihyun tbh since she's now 29 years old, her life and love story had to be adjusted ;; i'm sorry if it seems too long and if it gets confusing! and i hope you like her <3

 

31 oct: i'm sorry for the badly written love story--i've had a writer's block for a while now and i couldn't really put down this app because i had only a few more things to write.. sihyun had a love interest other than the baby's father at first but i wanted her to have a different ending than her parents' hence her love interest is the same as the baby's father (also, hence why i had to kinda write all over again and rushed to finish this :'))

 

if anything doesn't seem to make sense or need clarification, feel just hmu! ;u; i'm quiet ashamed to turn this in but again, i didn't want to put my effort revamping her go to waste ;;
