KASARI

APPEARANCE:

Kasari has long, wavy raven-black hair with auburn brown locks interspersed. She has large, piercing blue eyes that are framed by naturally thick eyelashes. Her round cheeks and small nose contribute to her youthful appearance, and she has a blindingly bright smile. Her chin is pointed and her skin is dark, like the rest of the citizens born in the Water Tribes. Although she is petite and lean, her muscles are quite strong from consistently working out every single day.

STYLE:

Kasari typically wears a long-sleeved, light blue tunic and dark blue leggings. She also wears sapphire teardrop earrings that are a family heirloom passed down from her mother. On colder days, she wears a thick, hooded fur-lined coat over her tunic that has the insignia of her father's martial arts academy embroidered in the center. The insignia is composed of a white polar bear paw print against a background of blue ocean waves, which is all enclosed in a blue circle. Her makeup is also quite simple as she only applies mascara, a bit of blush, and some pink lipstick.

Kasari is an accomplished young waterbender living in the Southern Water Tribe capital city. Her great-great grandfather founded a martial arts academy that provides combat training for both waterbenders and non-benders. Kasari loves combative waterbending and hopes to become a master waterbender one day, despite disapproval from a couple of traditional elders who still share the same views as those from the Northern Water Tribe. When Yyn and her friends arrive in the Southern Water Tribe capital city, Kasari happily leads them to the martial arts academy to help Yyn master the element of water. Yyn is not the first Avatar to be trained at the academy, following Avatar Misho who was an alumna several decades ago and trained under Kasari's grandfather. And because Kasari's father was close friends with the previous Avatar, Kasari is excited to get to know the current Avatar and strike up a friendship with her as well. Once Yyn completes her training at the martial arts academy, Kasari offers to join the group so that Yyn still has a waterbending teacher to guide her along the way and continues traveling with the group to see the rest of the world. Kasari is eager to study other bending styles outside of her element, since she knows her own combat skills will only improve with more exposure to other accomplished benders. She also loves adventures, so traveling around the world with the Avatar sounds like the perfect opportunity to experience dozens of fun adventures.

PERSONALITY TRAITS:
energetic, quirky, restless, impulsive, optimistic, diligent, inquisitive, gullible

PERSONALITY:

Kasari is an energetic go-getter who loves adventure. She does not tire easily and is extremely excitable due to her hyperactive nature. Kasari is always the first person to agree to anything that can be remotely considered a fun activity, regardless if it actually is, and will happily pull others with her into these crazy shenanigans. Her zeal knows no bounds, no matter what time of day it is. Kasari also stands out within a crowd due to her loud presence and quirkiness. She does not conform to societal conventions, choosing instead to do what feels truest to herself. Whether she is spinning herself into dizziness—just because it's fun—or laughing like a hyena at a funny joke, Kasari unabashedly walks to the beat of her own drum. She doesn't mind when people stare at her weirdly, since she is happy and content with who she is.

With so much energy coursing through her, Kasari can get restless quite easily and is always trying to find something to occupy herself. The activity itself doesn't need to be high-energy and something as simple as tracing circles into the snow will be enough to keep her from falling into boredom. Kasari just has to do something—anything—to keep her hands or mind occupied. This earnest need to always be moving around or doing an activity also leads to Kasari making some very impulsive decisions from time to time. She often acts before she thinks, which has gotten her into some sticky situations. Fortunately, nothing too scarring has resulted whenever Kasari does find herself in a bit of a predicament, due to a combination of her abilities to protect herself with her advanced waterbending skills and some pure dumb luck. Others around her do implore her to rein in this borderline reckless streak, since they fear for her safety at times. However, Kasari cannot help but lean more into the intrinsic spontaneity of life, since there is still so much left for her to experience.

As such, Kasari generally has a very optimistic outlook on life and always tries to find the silver lining in every situation, in spite of the war constantly looming overhead. Even if it may seem like there is nothing positive to glean, Kasari will manage to spin things around in a more idealistic light. She is determined to stay upbeat to avoid falling prey to the gloominess that often surrounds the community, especially after rough battles with the Fire Nation. She knows what her peers are capable of, which fuels her steadfast optimism and resolute confidence in herself and others. Kasari works incredibly hard and is very focused on her journey to becoming a master waterbender. She is able to push herself past her limits, especially knowing that all of this effort will eventually pay off. Kasari is a firm believer that those who continually try their best will succeed in the end, so she remains ever diligent in the face of adversity. The thought of being lazy has never once crossed her mind and it shows in her extremely active lifestyle.

Kasari also loves to learn new things and is quite inquisitive. She is always asking questions and trying to understand unfamiliar concepts, and this hunger for knowledge has allowed her to pick up and master new techniques much more quickly than the average student. The martial arts academy has given her the unique opportunity to unofficially and unconventionally continue her education past her formal elementary schooling, which Kasari is very grateful for. So she leaves no stone unturned, no thread untied, in her quest for knowledge. However, this willingness to absorb anything and everything does make it easy for Kasari to be tricked sometimes. Because she is so trusting of others, she can be rather gullible and easily fall for tricks. Although she has been taken advantage of several times by those with malicious intent, Kasari keeps her chin up and transforms these moments into learning opportunities instead. She would rather mistakenly believe in someone or something and later find out it was false than miss out on a new experience or fail to support someone by being a skeptic.

BACKGROUND:

In the Southern Water Tribe's capital city, there is an acclaimed martial arts academy that was established five generations ago. Its founder was a man named Atka, who was an accomplished waterbender. Many young and inexperienced waterbenders sought him out to learn combative waterbending from him, so the school initially began as a small training facility for waterbenders. With time, it gradually expanded to include non-benders who wished to hone their fighting skills as well. Atka did not discriminate between benders and non-benders, and actively promoted camaraderie amongst his students despite their differences. He chose to focus on their similarities, and often reminded his students that there was much they could learn from each other and that neither type of fighter was superior to the other. The martial arts academy eventually grew and grew until it became one of the most elite institutions in the Southern Water Tribe, and most of the soldiers who joined the Water Tribe army were academy alumni. Atka firmly maintained that anyone who wanted to join the martial arts academy could do so, no matter what their skill level was, and that they could stay for as long or as short as they liked. Although most people referred to the training institution as Atka's Academy, he personally refrained from attaching his name to the school because it was a place that served anyone and everyone, not just him. The lack of an official name was purposeful on his end and his successors honored his wish by keeping the martial arts academy nameless for future generations.

By the time Avatar Misho arrived at the Southern Water Tribe for her waterbending training, the head of the martial arts academy was Atka's grandson, Toklo. For five years, Avatar Misho developed her waterbending skills under his tutelage and trained with other students at the academy. Natak, who was Toklo's son, eventually became friends with Avatar Misho and helped her whenever she struggled with certain techniques, since water was the most difficult element for her to master. They often sparred together and Natak was able to greatly improve his own waterbending skills as well, since he learned firsthand how to counter the other elements through Avatar Misho. With Toklo personally overseeing both of their waterbending training, both Avatar Misho and Natak were able to develop into some of the most formidable fighters ever to come out of the academy. The two of them also became close friends with a snarky young girl named Lakada, who was stationed at the martial arts academy as a healer-in-training. Lakada happened to always be at the infirmary whenever Avatar Misho and Natak got scraped up during their sparring matches, and she often joked that they purposely got hurt so that she had people to practice healing on. Due to the strong friendship forged between the three of them, it was a very bittersweet occasion when it was finally time for Avatar Misho to leave the Southern Water Tribe capital city. On her last day, she promised her friends that she would visit the South Pole again once the Fire Nation was defeated and peace returned to the world. So Natak and Lakada sent her off with a smile and full trust in her abilities to be the heroine who could finally put an end to this devastating war.

Soon after Avatar Misho's departure from the South Pole, Natak officially became an instructor at the martial arts academy. His curriculum was unique in that it incorporated both offensive and defensive techniques that were tailored specifically to counter the other elements. Natak also struck up a romance with a healer named Meeka, who tended to his students whenever they got injured during practice fights. The two of them had known each other since they were children, having both grown up in the capital city, but did not develop feelings for each other until Meeka started helping out at the martial arts academy as part of her healer training. Because she was around so often, they often bumped into one another around the academy and soon began finding excuses to have conversations with each other whenever they could. After one year of dating, Natak and Meeka got married and started a family together. Meeka gave birth to two girls, Lusa and Kasari, and Natak took a short sabbatical from the academy both times to help his wife raise the newborns. Toklo eventually retired from running the martial arts academy, so Natak became the new head and began overseeing its operations alongside his teaching commitments and parenting duties. Meanwhile, Meeka transitioned from being a healer to becoming a midwife. Since both of her pregnancies had been relatively difficult, she wanted to help other women experience smoother pregnancies and births that would not be as physically or mentally taxing as hers were.

A year after Lusa's birth and while Meeka was pregnant with Kasari, Avatar Misho returned to the South Pole with a male earthbender in tow. He introduced himself as Heshin, hailing from Kyoshi Island. With Avatar Misho back in the city, Natak and Lakada held a small celebration for her and the group of friends talked long into the night as Avatar Misho regaled them with tales of her travels around the world. The next day, after the Avatar taught a special class at the martial arts academy, she revealed her main reason for returning to the Southern Water Tribe capital city: she was building a team to help her stop the Fire Nation from taking over the world, and she wanted Natak and Lakada to join her. Lakada immediately jumped at the opportunity and agreed to lend her healing skills to Avatar Misho's cause. However, Natak declined the invitation because of his responsibilities as both the new head of the martial arts academy and a new father with another child on the way. Although he would have greatly enjoyed getting to travel around the world with his friends, especially for such a noble cause, Natak knew that his top priorities were his family and the martial arts academy. So he had to say goodbye to Avatar Misho once again and send off Lakada as well this time around. However, he never could have imagined that this would be the last time he ever saw the Avatar. When Lakada and Heshin briefly returned to the Southern Water Tribe capital city six years later, Natak was not expecting them to deliver the news of Avatar Misho's death and he spent several weeks grieving over the loss of his long-time friend. She still had so much left to experience and it was cruel that the Fire Nation had taken that away from her, just like they had taken away the lives of countless other young people throughout the war. Natak was loath to send off his friends again, knowing what had happened to Avatar Misho the last time he did, but he also understood that Lakada and Heshin had their own duties as a war medic and an Earth Kingdom general, respectively. However, it did not make saying goodbye any easier and Natak's resolve to ensure that his students had the best possible training strengthened even more when his two friends departed the South Pole.

Meanwhile, Kasari's waterbending abilities manifested when she was six years old, much to her delight. She gleefully experimented with her bending and particularly enjoyed sparring with her father. Natak encouraged her to cultivate her abilities, even though the handful of elders who were much more traditional greatly side-eyed her training. This small group believed that her bending was better utilized for healing purposes, since she was female, and often made cutting remarks that Kasari should be more like her older sister, Lusa. However, Kasari was not interested in cultivating her healing skills to an advanced level. She enjoyed practicing her offensive waterbending and participating in mock battles with other students instead. The basics of healing to clean up any small wounds from sparring were enough for her. So Natak and Kasari brushed off these elders' judgment, deeming their disparaging comments as irrelevant drivel. And because the Southern Water Tribe was more open-minded in general about women learning combative waterbending, Kasari did not face much pushback overall from the rest of the community. Natak wanted his daughter to be as strong as Avatar Misho was, so he actively let Kasari help out at the academy and personally trained her to be one of the best combative waterbenders in the Southern Water Tribe. Kasari absorbed all of his lessons like a sponge and diligently practiced as much as she could, greatly inspired by the tales that her father told her of the late Avatar.

After years of training, Kasari is now an assistant instructor at the martial arts academy. She aids full-fledged instructors like her best friend, Kallik, and conducts practice sparring matches with bending and non-bending students of all levels. She also continues her personal waterbending training under Natak and usually tests her new skills on Kallik with Lusa on standby, in case anyone gets hurt. Even if there weren't a war waging amongst the nations, Kasari would spend most of her day training because she loves waterbending with all of her heart and thinks that it is an honor to possess such an amazing skill. She is grateful every day to be a waterbender and wears the metaphorical badge of honor with immense pride. Even so, Kasari is able to balance her waterbending training with fun adventures around the South Pole with Kallik, and relaxing moments at home with Lusa and Meeka. Since such carefree and peaceful moments are also becoming scarcer by the day, Kasari does her best to enjoy each day as it comes and not let the gray cloud of war continuously hang over her. She is confident in herself and her people to defend their home from the Fire Nation if push comes to shove, since they've gotten the best training possible from the best martial arts academy around.

TRIVIA:

She hopes to eventually succeed her father as the head of the martial arts academy, regardless of the judgment and criticism from the handful of traditional and conservative elders who believe that her father's successor should be male.
She loves to go penguin sledding, especially with the younger students from the martial arts academy.
Whenever she's bored, she likes to roll around in the snow, even though she's been told on numerous occasions by others that they think it's a weird thing to do. Her response is to smile and roll around even more.
She loves to eat and will often volunteer to finish other people's leftovers. Due to a combination of fast metabolism and constant exercise, she burns through calories in an instant and is able to maintain her fit figure while still eating to her heart's content.
She is an avid reader and often ends her day by reading a chapter or two in bed before going to sleep. These fictional stories help her relax after a long day of physical training.
She usually starts off her morning with a quick swim so that she feels energized for the rest of the day.
She loves going to festivals and celebrating holidays. There are usually fun games to play and delicious food to eat, so she always looks forward to these special days.
She is more of a night owl than an early riser, especially because her waterbending is stronger at night when the moon is high up in the sky.
People often think she is younger than she actually is, due to her youthful features and small stature, which she happily uses to her advantage.
Having lived in the South Pole her entire life, it is difficult for her to fall asleep in hot weather.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Father - Natak (45) / Head of Martial Arts Academy / sensible, progressive, shrewd, devoted / 9/10 / face claim - Jason Scott Lee

Kasari firmly believes that her waterbending skills would not have improved so quickly if Natak weren't such a supportive father who fully believed in his younger daughter's dreams. He was one of the first to encourage Kasari to develop her combative waterbending when she was a child, since he saw how much potential and talent she had to become a great fighter. He sees Avatar Misho's grit and drive in his younger daughter, and wishes that the previous Avatar were still alive since he believes they would have gotten along swimmingly and Kasari would have learned so much from her.

Natak allows Kasari the freedom of dictating her training schedule with him and does not push her past what she's comfortable with. In fact, he usually has to pull Kasari back from overtraining since she can get a bit overzealous, especially when she is trying to master a new skill. And although Natak is her main teacher, he encourages Kasari to learn and absorb as much as she can from other mentors, since he knows there's a limit to his own capabilities. Outside of the academy, Natak and Kasari spend their downtime together either fishing, swimming, or meditating. They try to indulge in relaxing activities to contrast their fast-paced, high-energy training at the martial arts academy.

Mother - Meeka (44) / Midwife / enthusiastic, social, generous, sincere / 9/10 / face claim - Miriam Quiambao

While the rest of her family is at the martial arts academy during the day, Meeka is often visiting various families around the South Pole to help women with prenatal and postnatal care. Most of her patients are located in the Southern Water Tribe capital city, but she does regularly travel to smaller villages around the South Pole since the women living there often have less resources and support. Kasari often goes with her mother to these small villages, serving as Meeka's unofficial bodyguard since traveling has become much more dangerous thanks to the war, and helps out with any small tasks during checkups. These short trips are when Meeka and Kasari bond the most, and there is never a silent moment since both women are quite talkative.

At home, Meeka and Kasari also cook together, and Meeka greatly enjoys teaching her younger daughter how to make various dishes. They also like to experiment with new recipes unheard of in the Southern Water Tribe, usually debuting any successful attempts through food stalls at local festivals. Meeka often feels more like a friend than an adult to Kasari, because of her mother's youthful energy, and Kasari appreciates that there is no pressure for her to settle down and start a family yet. In fact, Meeka regularly encourages Kasari to live out her youth to the fullest and explore as much as she can. Having kids changes one's life and Meeka recognizes that her younger daughter is not at that stage yet, so it makes her happy to see Kasari run around and play with friends outside.

Older Sister - Lusa (22) / Healer / gentle, trustworthy, forgiving, kind / 10/10 / face claim - Auli'i Cravalho

Lusa and Kasari are an incredibly close pair of sisters. They complement each other like the symbols of Yin and Yang, with Lusa resembling the receptive Yin and Kasari resembling the active Yang. Their bending preferences also match this duality, with Lusa specializing in healing and Kasari specializing in combat. Together, they're a well-rounded duo who bring out the best in each other. Lusa is usually there to patch up Kasari after her younger sister has a particularly rough sparring match and has taught Kasari several simple healing techniques that she can use on the off-chance that Lusa is busy with her duties at a local healing clinic she recently started working at. Kasari has helped Lusa learn some basic defensive moves as well, so her older sister is able to defend herself if Lusa ever finds herself in danger.

Lusa greatly enjoys watching Kasari show off her waterbending skills during the younger sibling's practice matches while Kasari is always in awe of how seamlessly Lusa is able to heal others. And as different as they are in temperament and skills, both Lusa and Kasari love to play and have fun together. Kasari is usually the one who leads their adventures nowadays, but when they were younger, Lusa was oftentimes the one bringing her sister around the city and taking her to fun activities with other children. And although there is not as much time for fun with the war growing more and more dire, the two sisters still carve time out of their day to do something fun or relaxing together and talk about anything currently on their minds.

Best Friend - Kallik (24) / Waterbending Instructor / confident, adventurous, selfless, hardy / 10/10 / face claim - Alex Aiono

Kasari and Kallik's friendship began when Kasari first visited the martial arts academy as a six-year-old. She ran up to the first person she saw, who happened to be Kallik, and excitedly challenged him to a sparring match. The ten-year-old boy was confused at first by this random young girl yelling at him at the top of her lungs, but decided to humor her and accepted her challenge as a warm-up to a practice match he had with a classmate later that afternoon. Kasari lost spectacularly, to no one's surprise, but this loss did not dampen her spirits at all and she eagerly asked Kallik for tips on how to improve her waterbending. Amused by her spunk, he agreed to let her tag along to his future practice matches and a steady friendship eventually blossomed between the two as time passed.

Kasari and Kallik feed off of each other's boundless energy as both of them are incredibly extroverted, and they spend much of their time either training together or traipsing around the South Pole for fun. Others who hang out with them are often exhausted at the end, but Kasari and Kallik only seem to be more energized. Along with being best friends, Kallik is also Kasari's closest waterbending mentor, after Natak, and helps her strengthen the new skills she learns from her father. He has witnessed firsthand just how much Kasari has improved from that tiny six-year-old girl who was clumsily learning how to control her newfound abilities. And Kallik fully believes that Kasari can become a waterbending master who is just as accomplished as any male bender, perhaps even more so at the rate of her explosive growth.

Skillset

Waterbending:

Kasari is well on her way to becoming a master waterbender, thanks to her extensive training at her father's martial arts academy. Her skills are relatively advanced, especially for her age, and she practices her waterbending for several hours every day without fail to keep herself in tip-top shape. She can easily create water whips and ice projectiles that strike with sharp precision and accuracy. Kasari can also conjure both water and ice shields, deploying whichever one will be more effective at the time. Similarly, she can build domes out of water or ice around herself for protection or to trap her opponents. When she is around massive bodies of water, Kasari is able to summon strong waves and water towers to either transport herself or sweep away her opponents. Kasari is currently working on mastering the ice drill technique. She has not nailed it quite yet, due to the sheer amount of power needed to create and maintain such a mighty weapon, but she is getting closer to conquering the skill by the day.

Hand-to-Hand Combat:

Kasari is quite well-versed in hand-to-hand combat due to sparring regularly with non-benders who attend her father's martial arts academy. She is able to throw punches and kicks with ease, going for rapid frequency over raw power because of her tiny frame. Her agility allows her to weave around and aim elbow strikes at her opponents. Whenever her arms are restrained, Kasari delivers a sharp knee strike to free herself. Because she is usually too small to constrain her larger opponents in chokeholds or other grappling positions, she has learned to sweep them off-balance and keep them pinned to the ground.

Healing:

Kasari is capable of basic healing skills, having learned from both her mother and her older sister. Thus, she is able to heal minor wounds and scratches with ease. If given enough time and water, Kasari can heal more devastating external physical wounds, but she usually defers such responsibilities to her sister or other more experienced healers, knowing that time is of the essence when it comes to these graver injuries.

Are You Ready?

How do you feel about the war?

It's been tough on all of us, but we're doing our best to stay strong and help each other out whenever we can!

Do you think it will end soon? Do you want it to?

I hope so! The Southern Water Tribe is getting stronger by the day, especially since we've poured more resources into training every able-bodied and willing citizen. It would be great if we could properly join forces with the Northern Water Tribe and the Earth Kingdom, since we're more powerful together than we are alone. But regardless, I'm going to do my part to keep the world safe until the very end!

If there is a new Avatar, it would be someone from the Fire Nation. How do you feel about that?

I don't want to be judgmental and assume that the new Avatar is going to be bad, since they'll be from the Fire Nation. Maybe they'll be on our side instead! But if the Avatar does end up siding with the Fire Lord, that's even more of a reason for the rest of the world to band together to protect ourselves.
