Mingyu's creativity for their choreographies is easily accepted by their choreographers and some of the producers usually ask her to submit a sketch for their album covers. Mingyu can get emotional whenever her stress piles up without being spilled, and when her emotions burst, the waterworks will immediately turn on.
Xu Mingyu is also insecure. She is insecure about her face since a lot of people called her ugly, about her body because she thinks she is fat and doesn't have a good figure, about her actions that can be mistaken as her being a tomboy even though it's just the way she is. She is insecure about a lot of things. Aside from her being insecure, she is also an overthinker. She overthinks about the choreographies that she suggested if they are good enough and if she is good enough to suggest it. She also overthinks about their fans if they like her or not. she can also be blunt. Whenever she doesn't like something made by someone or someone being sloppy, she always tells them bluntly even though she will overthink it later that day. She is also an overprotective member of the group. Those who are rude towards her members can bring out her bluntness. Sometimes, the members complain about her overprotectiveness but it's not that bad even though she thinks it is too bad.
Xu Mingyu was born on the 31st of December, 2003 in the city of Anshan, in central-southeast Liaoning Province, the People's Republic of China to a Chinese Wushu Instructor, Xu Changmin, and a College Professor, Wei Qionglian. Xu Minghao is her older brother by three years. They lived in a happy neighborhood in Anshan before the two moved to a far-away arts school to learn more about breakdancing.
Since Mingyu and Minghao are siblings, both of them like the same hobbies. When one of them wanted to learn one thing, the other would follow and copy. An example was when Mingyu wanted to learn Wushu, Minghao followed. When Minghao became obsessed with breakdancing in middle school, Mingyu also became obsessed. But even siblings have their differences. Another hobby that Minghao had was watching dramas, while Mingyu was watching anime.
But siblings will always be siblings. So, after Minghao auditioned in Pledis Entertainment, Mingyu followed right after. But Minghao is the only one who got accepted. Mingyu dejectedly went back to China and continued to hone her skills.
An opportunity arose when SM announced that they will be having an online audition where the participants would upload a video of them doing what they do best. Mingyu grabbed the opportunity and uploaded a video of her dancing to Bruno Mars' 24K Magic. But her video is not getting enough attention and that made her feel down for a few days until Minghao called her and they talked about things that happened to each other.
Minghao shared Mingyu's video with his friends. He also shared it with his fans when he went live and told them to support his little sister which made the video gain a lot of viewers from Carats.

⊹ She did b-boying in China for nine years, three years together with Minghao, and another six years after she went back to China.
⊹ Mingyu bowed and smiled at the camera, "Hello, My name is Xu Mingyu. I'm 17 years old, and I'm from Anshan, Liaoning, China."
⊹ Mingyu chuckled nervously before answering, "Well... It was my dream since I was young. I also want to experience what my brother experienced when he debuted."
⊹ Mingyu fumbled with her hands as the overwhelming feeling came back to her. "I was really happy and overwhelmed at the same time. After it was announced that I'm one of the winners, I immediately called my brother and told him about it. He was so happy for me and he told me that I deserve it, but I still can't believe it since there are more talented people out there, more talented than me."
⊹ Mingyu thought about the question and answered, "I want to grow with them and improve ourselves as a group. I also want to be someone who can inspire other people just like how our seniors inspired us."
⊹ Mingyu thought about the question again before answering, "If we could renew our contracts together, then I would like that very much. But if the other members won't renew and we would part ways, I would still respect their decision." Mingyu nodded to herself before continuing, " Maybe, after the contract is over, I might go back to China or try to be a soloist."
⊹ Mingyu smiled her sweetest smile and said, "Thank you to everyone supporting Girls Zone. I hope you continue to support us, even if all of us won't be in Girls Zone anymore. Thank you again!" Mingyu gave her final bow before waving at the camera.
