It may have something to do with the fandom as well. I think the first wave of certain groups' fans have left, the second wave with the popular writers is dying, and, if the fans are getting older and busier, there may not be a third wave. I used to not be able to keep up with fics updating in my subs. I tried not to have over 200 fics because 10-15 would update in a few days and I genuinely couldn't keep up and there's no marker for the ones you haven't read yet once you navigate away from checking your subs the first time. I'd have to remember and it was really hard. Now, if 5 fics update in a week, it's a busy week.
I don't think fics are dying out, though who knows, IDK the younger people/ teens on this site or in general, so maybe they don't read fics and do other things, but I feel like maybe certain groups are starting to have less, maybe because their fans have grown busy. I've noticed for the past year and a half, this site hasn't been the same. But then I go to wattpad occasionally and see that that site is COMPLETELY different than what I remember and has grown even bigger from what was already a huge platform. I think this site, particularly certain groups, has way less activity, though.
I believe it's just this site. I don't know why the reason to it. It used to be overpopulated with fans but I guess other websites like Wattpad or Ao3 have much better recommendations. But I still prefer AFF no matter what. This site is special to me :)
I think the activeness on this site has shrunk a lot. people still read but don't interact. but if you go on wattpad and tumblr you can see ppl still love fanfic lol.
