born in june 16, 1994 to a young couple in incheon, lee kijoon had a happy childhood. since he is the only child, his parents are protective of him, most especially his mother. turns out it wasn't her son she should have paid more attention but her husband.
the reason stated for the lees' divorce was different lifestyles but in reality it was adultery, they were just both too prideful to admit. his mother was very keen on her image and so was his dad. their seperation happened just after middle school but since then, a young kijoon swore true love does not exist so whenever a girl confesses to him during high school, he'd flirt back. that was until he meets soojung.
INTERACTIONS : kijoon has known chiwon as long as he knows his sister; for more than a decade. so he has literally seen the younger kang grow up from a young kid to an adult. kijoon has considered chiwon as a brother long before he married his sister as they used to hang out and play video games without ryuwon. chiwon, being the cheeky little that he is, has known of his hyungs feelings towards his sister and has been constantly teasing them since their high school days.
INTERACTIONS : though not his realy sibling, kijoon considers his cousin dabin as his older sister as they are both the only children in their families. however, kijoon would because she seems more of a mother as she would nag him a lot. she attended the same high school as kijoon and ryuwon and is close to the couple so she's one of the many witnesses of their love story. because of her closeness to them, she became the maid of honor in their wedding. kijoon met maisie and got a place in eden all through dabin as the two women are co-workers.
INTERACTIONS : upon seeing maisie for the first time, kijoon had thought maisie was much younger than he was when he's just a few years older. he has since then apologized for his mistake (and for having his crazy older cousin dabin as a co-worker). still, whenever he sees maisie he gives him advises in life as if she was that young. in moments like this ryuwon would remind her husband that he's not that old and to quit acting like a grandpa. perhaps it's his desire to have a younger sibling that makes him like this.
while he treats maisie as a younger sister, he treats her husband like a friend he has known his whole life. he was so happy that there's someone in the apartment that has the same age as him. despite being an introvert, kijoon's charm has worked on sehun and the two are often seen playing video games together or bickering over the fact whether mint choco is a pleasant flavour or not.
PROLOGUE :
chapter one:
the start of a decade long love story
kijoon and ryuwon's love story was ten years in the making.
kijoon was new in school and despite all that, he had been the topic of the student body. the female student body, to be exact. he was charismatic and athletic, which is why most girls in their year were attracted to him. the outgoing kijoon loved all the attention, but he noticed one particular girl from another class seemed like she wasn't interested in him at all.
(he didn't mind. he was just curious.
during that time, her parents' continuous disagreement has started.)
both high school students enjoyed learning new things so they always coincided in extracurricular activities. they also loved parties and shared a lot of things in common so despite being in different class, they just naturally became friends. through tout high school they were inseparable, they were each other's partners in crime and when it was soojung's parents who separated, it was kijoon who was her shoulder to cry on.
"when my parents divorced, i had a really bad time. but it eventually got better with time. so kang, i know it will hurt but i will be here with you until it stops. because i love you and i will never leave you." he had told her while he was hugging her when she was crying. though he meant it genuinely, he immediately regrets saying it.
she didn't say anything at that moment, but later that day she asks if he really meant what he said. she asked not as a friend, and she made it clear. he gets nervous.
kijoon didn't want to lose her. he knew that if he had told her the truth, things would change. "the best thing about staying friends is that we will never break up like most couples do." he tells her with a weak smile.
despite also displaying a weak smile, she just agrees quietly.

chapter two:
barely adults
the problem with ryuwon is that she falls easily, deeply, quickly. kijoon has told her that before which became an argument between the two of them. but when kijoon found out that ryuwon's boyfriend had cheated on her, he had not missed a second to run over to her place and be with her. ryuwon was a fresh graduate, and has recently moved in with her ex but there was no use to that anymore.
it was obvious that she was a mess despite the fake smile she had - her hair was a mess, her eyes were teary and the clutter in their shared flat indicates that an argument has just happened there. kijoon's first instinct was to comfort her. it was when he hugged her when she started breaking down, cursing her now ex-boyfriend, his 'shrimp ' and the audacity for him to cheat in their own flat.
once she had calmed down, kijoon had intended to make her laugh by improvising a song with a guitar her ex used to own. he was supposed to help her move out, but avoids a telling off from her when he successfully makes her laugh with his dumb song which ends up with a love advise coming from kijoon. they both find it ironic since he is quite the player, having a different fling or girlfriend every year.
"i'm serious tho. kang, you deserve better. i'll make sure that you'll never get your heart broken." he tells her seriously, looking at her intently but
looking away when she looked back. "maybe you shouldn't just look for it, you know? maybe it will come naturally."
(he was lowkey talking about himself.
she pretended not to hear.)
ryuwon didn't want to stay in her mother's house and had planned to spend a couple of nights at a hotel, but kijoon knew that was crazy. so after a night of karaoke, a method she does to deal with her heartbreak, he tells her to stay in his flat for a few days instead. he sleeps in his couch in the living room, while she stays in his room.
but neither could sleep, so quietly she comes out of his room and once he noticed that she was there, he sat up. though he didn't say a word he made a gesture as if telling her to sit next to her, which she does. quietly, they cuddle and talk about life without their usual bickering until they fell asleep.
chapter three:
realizations
at the age of 25, soojung claims that she wanted to marry the guy she has been dating. turns out 'the love of her life' has been cheating on her, too. kijoon was out on a date when she told him she was in hong kong after her break up. the next thing she knew he was outside her hotel room in hong kong.
(what she was doing in hong kong, he did not know but there he was anyways.
she wasn't expecting him, but why did her heart just skip a beat?)
she just wanted to inform him that she cannot hangout that weekend, and yet here he was in front of her looking as if he was the one who got cheated on. he admits that was mad at himself for letting her go through the same thing again. it was then when kijoon finally decided he didn't want to be just her best friend anymore, but he didn't want to take advantage of the situation that she's just broken up. he didn't want to ask her out immediately. not yet at least.
ryuwon had flown to hong kong to clear her mind, but when she got there she didn't have the urge to go out of her hotel room, but kijoon made it is his mission to take her out and make her enjoy, if it means doing her makeup which is the only reason that made her get up from her bed.
"do you ever wonder what would it be like if we became to be?" asked a fascinated ryuwon staring at the hong kong's skyline during their trip at the city's observatory.
"it'd probably be like this." kijoon answers, also looking at the same scenery as hers. he then recounts their whole day together as they ate out, went shopping, went on a hike, rode a boat, went on a city tour in a bus, etc...
"let's just make it like this everyday." she says jokingly with a chuckle.
"don't say things you don't really mean." he utters firmly and she turns to him, slightly shocked. "don't look at me like that. and don't pretend like you do not know what i mean, soojung." not it was his turn to look at her. "i've always stood next to you, and i don't regret any actions i've done for you, but i'm a man too. it's not that hard to fall in love-"
"kijoon."
"do you ever wonder why i go around with girls everytime? i've been doing it since high school thinking it'd help me get over you, but to no avail." he chuckles sadly. "i'm not going to say anything else, i know you need your closure, your space, but you know my number and i'm just one call away when you're ready."
being kijoon and ryuwon, they pretended like such conversation didn't happen. they absolutely hated being awkward with one another so they just didn't talk about it throughout their trip. but things did change once they went back to seoul. she didn't mean to ignore him but he knew she needed time to think about what had just happened. he also received some updates from her cheeky younger brother, though he didn't ask for it.
then one day, he just received a message from her asking if they could meet up. excited but nervous, he prepared himself to whatever happens that night. he arrived earlier than the planned time that he started getting worried that she might not show up in the end. but she did.
with a nervous, shy smile she approached him and just seeing her has already made him happy. but this was short lived as ten minutes into meeting each other, soojung couldn't bear keeping her news to herself anymore.
"i want to give him another chance. we're... back together."
now while it would hurt kijoon if she had dumped him, this hurt him even more. and it was obvious with his expression. he didn't mind getting hurt, but he hates seeing her getting hurt again and he's sure as hell she's not going to benefit from her current relationship. "why do you do this to yourself, ryuwon? , i just don't understand."
"being friends for us is good enough, isn't it? because we will never break up... isn't it what you said before?"
"friends my . are we even friends? me going to wherever you are and vice versa. did you even tell him that you're going to see me?"
she becomes quiet, and looks down. "kijoon, you're very important to me. if we became a couple and broke up, i don't know what i'll do."
"how would you know that when we haven't even tried?"
"i don't want to risk us. if we were, we wouldn't have last long."
"i really shouldn't have asked us to be just friends." he utters sadly.
(he walks away, but she had no guts to ask him to stay.)
despite the endless calls he receives, he did not once answer her calls. he even had to apologize to wonwoo because he couldn't answer his messages either. still, even when he's ignoring him, she still reminds him of every single thing.
it was the same with ryuwon. sure she had her boyfriend but she had always been a good pretender. she would pretend like nothing's bothering her, when it fact she misses kijoon a lot. one day it just hit her. if she was truly happy with her relationship, she wouldn't be thinking of another man. she wouldn't be reminded of kijoon with just the smallest things like when she sees anything that's of colour red or when their favorite song comes on her playlist.
so she breaks up with her boyfriend, but this time for real. she wasn't in tears this time. she was happy after finally admitting to herself that she really is in love with kijoon. she wants to confront their future, knowing that it's just on the palm of their hands.
chapter four:
the road to forever
how can you catch someone who doesn't want to talk to you? it's easy when it comes to kijoon. the boy has to start his day jogging by han river, so it is where ryuwon went to so he could talk to him. complete with her running gear, she was so ready to catch him but was also lowkey praying that she actually catches up to him because that guy runs so fast.
just like how she expected, kijoon runs faster upon seeing her which annoys ryuwon. she knew that there's no way he'll be outrunning him so instead of continuing begging him to stop, she pretends to get hurt and kijoon being kijoon got worried quickly. he runs back to her and it is when she finally apologizes.
firstly, for tricking him at that moment, and then for being a complete idiot. she also tells him that she has completely broken up with her ex-boyfriend, and even though he had been quiet throughout he couldn't help himself but to ask why. she cites that she is in love with somebody else, and he rolls his eyes.
"i can't believe you came all the way here just to dump me for the second time."
ryuwon sighs. "it's you i'm in love with... idiot."
silence surrounded them, mainly because kijoon couldn't believe what he was hearing and was turning red. "you have a crush on me? that's embarrassing, kang."
"i'm in love with you, kijoon." she repeats, and he becomes more flustered.
"so now you want to become my girlfriend, huh?" he teases her, but was more shocked with her answer.
"i don't want to be your girlfriend. can you not marry me instead?" she says seriously. ryuwon has always been the type to have no filter with her words, so he knew she wasn't joking. "you can say no. i inderectly said no to you so-"
"yes." he cuts her off before she says anything else. "you're so unfair, kang. you know i can never say no to you." he has the biggest grin on his face, and so as she. "thank you for choosing me."
(this was quickly followed by a long kiss that has already been due for a long time. also some awkward stares from strangers, but they're too happy to care.)

EPILOGUE :
interactions: even after getting married, the two are still in belief that they together after ten years of friendship. they've always been close to the point that skinship was no problem when they were still friends. but now that they're married, they take their pda to the next level. they don't shy away from holding hands to kissing in public, which disgusts chiwon whenever he hangs out with them.
potential marriage problems: because of his work, kijoon tends to be abroad most of the times, leaving ryuwon alone in their apartment. though she loves kijoon wholeheartdly and she knew he wont do anything that would disappoint her, she couldn't help but to have trust issues. after all, she got cheated on twice plus her parent's failed relationship due to her cheating father. the fact that he used to be such a player doesn't help either.
changes in their relationship: nothing really much has changed in their relationship except for the fact their interactions got romantic. they still bicker a lot, fighting over the littlest things. they are still like the troublemaker kids that they were ten years ago.
kijoon's lifestyle: whether he has a flight or not, kijoon tends to start his day working out by jogging, or if he cannot really run outside, by doing push ups. there are a lot of times when he doesn't go home in a day due to the fact he has flights in europe or in america. he enjoys playing video games which he often does with his brother in law, and also tends to have a drink with friends ocassionally.
ryuwon's lifestyle: ryuwon is those kind of artsy hipster you'd find on a cafe. when her husband's not home, she'd have breakfast at their local café. she enjoys nature a lot, so when she's not stuck approving ideas for their magazine or thinking of a new design, she is out and about taking pictures of whatever she finds artistic or 'healing' as she says. her hobbies include going to karaoke and travelling. she also tends to visit her mother sometimes together with her younger brother.
COUPLE TRIVIA :

the divorce of her parents have changed her drastically. she has been sensitive and so easily distressed since then that she's begun to think more about others than herself in fear that they leave her. this also resulted in her being quite clingy and yet untrusting of the people around her. she is not afraid of saying what's on her mind, even though it may be embarrassing or hurtful to others.
kang ryuwon was born on the 30th of novermber 1994 in the city of seoul to a middle class family, the first child and only daughter of a recently married couple. her mother was a writer in a magazine while her father was an employee in an office. her younger brother was born two years after. their family was a relatively normal family, or so ryuwon thought.
her childhood days were filled of laughter and happiness. she remembers her family holidays abroad or the weekends they visited their grandparents in the countryside. everything started to change during her early teens. though they never showed it in front of their kids, ryuwon's parents fought more often. ryuwon was noticing small little things, but she didn't say a word. she just protected her little brother, distracting him so he wouldn't know a single thing.
it was in high school when her parents divorced after her father cheated on her mother, and despite being hurt about it, she did not cry in front of her family but kept them going during the start of their big change in their life. she did however let it all out whenever she's with kijoon, whom she felt so comfortable with. her father has since then left their family, and only communicates with the kang siblings on social media accounts. still, she invited him on her wedding and but he didn't show up.
