PERSONALITY

zara is compassionate, warm, charming, and is generally welcoming to new friends. despite her sharp visuals and kick- rapping skills, zara is seen to be the moral compass that keeps iseul & her groupmates in check in tense situations, though she is also seen to have a bit of a defiant side. zara is not afraid to speak her mind and isn't afraid to break rules, a trait she shares with her mother and also her idol; kim heechul. she is able to stand up to higher ranked individuals for what she believes in and fights and argues to get the point across whenever necessary.

growing up, she developed very strong inter-personal skills, and somehow finds herself in the role of the peacemaker frequently. since she make decisions by using their personal values, they are usually very sympathetic and concerned for other people’s well-being. zara is quite very resourceful & observant about other people. she also seems to be able to sense what is wrong with someone before others might, responding warmly with a solution to a practical need.

along with those traits, zara is very supportive, protective, and loving towards her loved ones, urging them to do what makes them happ and willing to let go of her own happiness if it will make things better for them. zara often seeks to comfort those around her, although she also has a strict and disciplinarian side, particularly when it comes to practicing and creating music. 

she is fiercely loyal to her family and loved ones, despite this, she will fight for what she believes is right even if the odds go against her. she would only cede and make the necessary sacrifice or adjustments when she sees the sense in it and how it would contribute to the greater good of her career & sowon. zara seems always to be on a quest for deeper meaning, constantly searching for himself and his place in the world. everything he does is to confirm the worth of his own existence, to make a mark.

as for her flaws, the feeling of inferiority was born in her teens and throughout her career. she always feels like she's the least important; even in the team of nine and then seven members, she feels that she is the "seventh wheel". alongside that, she also has low self-esteem. being a foreign member, she was always misunderstood to not being quite fluent with korean to not being able to receive more than a few rap lines which made her think herself as useless and invaluable.

she admitted that she struggles with not being able to say what she wants, being true to herself, and worries she may be living a lie because of her responsibility as an idol in which she, at times, has to compromise her true self. her motivation for being a rapper was to be able to freely express himself which is why she chose the freer form of rap as opposed to song writing. she thinks art is showing to others the world you see and places a high value on being understood.
 

BACKGROUND

1992-2002 she was born in hunan, china. after turning 3, her parents sent her to live with her grandma and a few more of her cousins that are around her age. she was the oldest granddaughter which led her to be either the ringleader or the peacemaker on most on their shenanigans. her grandma always scolded them and what not but at least the chaotic lifestyle made the time pass by faster. her grandma then decided to sent the motley crew of her grandchildren to karate, dance and singing classes to let their energy being used in a creative way other than going around the neighbourhood causing havoc. 

every holiday, their cousins and her would do a mini concert among themselves and put on a talent show for their grandma as they were all inspired from the shows that they watch from tv. zara learned to love performing as her family became her first audience.
 
2002-2006 her parents finally got stability in their lifestyle and was able to take zara back home with them but the catch is their new home will be in melbourne, australia. zara didn't want to leave her grandma and her cousins behind but it was her grandma that told her to not cage herself and fly free to go for her dreams even though she does want zara to stay close with her.

and so, with a heavy heart; she left her first home. 

in melbourne, she was mostly bullied due to the language barrier and with that, the ever so confident zara disappeared but a spark enlightened in her heart to not give up that she continued to trudge on. zara always hated violence even though she can defend herself well until one day, she just end up fighting them back after realizing that she finally had enough, beating them into a pulp with the pented up anger from those bullying. she then became quite rebellious and most of her classmates distanced herself after she got a few fights.

zara didn't mind the loneliness, she continued to study her best and trying not to get into much trouble. it was on christmas 2005 when her family went on a family trip with just them three to seoul. they were walking around the shop lots and stopped by a busking performance. as the singer was pulling some members from the audience to sing along with them, zara was pulled by the main singer and sang through the last two songs with them which she enjoyed very much.

it was then she was scouted right there by jyp scout, asking her to come by and audition at jyp. her parents didn't mind on her career path choice even though she never thought of being an idol just yet. zara decided to just go with the flow and see where it'll take her.

— they both met in the most cliche of ways, by bumping into each other in the toilets in 2010 when f(x) came back with nu abo & sowon with twinkle. jia accidentally apologized in mandarin and likewise amber replied back in the same language which then made them both realized that they both can speak in the language. zara was really excited to meet another person to talk in mandarin for she haven't spoke that language much with another soul for some time and that itself brought them two into a very close friendship till this day. 


— so from amber, she was introduced to hyuna when all the three of them hang out together when their comebacks match with each other and suddenly the three of them are close-knit as ever. as zara is as much of a foodie as hyuna is, they both often go for food hunts together. zara and her would brain-storm for hyuna's solo concepts especially the art direction in her music videos as she would ask zara's opinions first before laying it out at her team. hyuna is another woman that she would pretty much spend her free time with outside from the sowon girls. zara was one of the first few people to know of hyuna and dawn together along with her them joining in pnation.


— jo kwon and zara go way back with their friendship. he was one of the senior trainees in jyp when zara first got in and he basically took her under his wing. zara is forever grateful to jo kwon for without him, she wouldn't make friends with the other trainees in jyp. even though she was then transferred to y.i entertainment and him debuting in 2am, he would always check on zara and zara would do the very same. zara visited him while he's in military at least once a month and fills him in the latest hoobae comebacks so he'll stay updated.


— leo is one of the guys that really intrigued zara when she first saw him and the other members of vixx wearing heavy make up during their on and on era. he was too quiet and anti-social back but as sowon and vixx are always standing nearby each other during end shows and then was seated nearby each other again during other music shows; they first started with excuse mes and thank yous. as some time goes on, she started asking him random questions to ease the tension as they stood next to each other during shows and that built up their friendship as jokes and pun are apparently the key to takwoon's heart. they hang out a lot and are comfortable with each other. he would ask her advice on song-writing and as did she. 


— as she trained in y.i ent longer than her, she was one of her first friends in the company and iseul showed her the ropes in the company. iseul is her partner in crime for they're both 92 liners which really knocked any awkward wall between the two. whatever zara is lacking, iseul fills in the gap and vice versa, they balance each other quite well for a pisces & aries combination. they bicker like an old married couple and both are also into skinship with each other which brings fans into shipping them both as #qiseul. 


— as she is one of the youngest girls of the bunch, zara loves to spoil her with her skinship and lets the younger girl to get crazy with her when they're together. zara understands how pressured the girl was when she was pushed into the it girl role that company had created for her and always watch over her protectively, which probably what led hana to trust and appreciate zara alot. 


— dahlia was always icy from the start and somehow it never bothered zara. what zara knows is that, she's always happy to help the girl with anything and then around especially with english puns because dahlia would mostly be the one of the few people to get her joke or simply calling her endearments to loosen her up from her cold stare. after the years went by, it's safe that they're quite close that dahlia somehow opened up more towards the other sowon members including zara and papa zara is just glad that she decided to smash the walls that was guarded around her. zara is also dahlia's self appointed lao she for mandarin when dahlia aske for her help with her mandarin.


— they were amicable when sowon came together as the two are both quite friendly and charming but unlike sora, zara needs time to recharge her social battery which something that zara really likes about the girl. she can always count on sora for extra reactions whenever zara pulls her pun or cringy pick up lines. with sora, zara always ends up brewing her some ginger tea for she's very much aware on how the girl can't stand the cold. so far, only zara can actually tell sora on what to do for she mostly tells sora to clean up her room and basically saving her before she gets into trouble. 


— if there's another member that she's quite close, it's haneul. like dahlia, she's quite a tough cookie to crack but haneul was always around her whenever she needs. as zara was mostly ignored by the company, she was feeling quite blue and it was thanks to haneul for pulling zara into random brainstorm sessions with her, dreaming on a comeback concept that they would love for sowon to try out along with writing songs together which is all stored in zara's journal. those sessions became her coping mechanism from falling apart during the first few comebacks. . 


— yujin was protective over zara, knowing her struggles and was constantly helping her to get around when zara is feeling so left out. zara respects her a lot as an older sister that she never had and was really saddened with yujin's choice to leave the group. as iseul took yujin's mantle, zara immediately helps iseul so yujin can rest assured. she still keeps in contact with yujin as iseul was doing the same, they both find themselves asking for each other if life is treating them well and so on. 


— one of the members that are close with her, probably from how they're both always pushed aside together. zara never felt in such dilemma when the fight happened and that yuri expects her to be on her side which is not what zara do for she tries to be neutral to not make the situation more chaotic as it already was. yuri and her still follow each other on social media and goes on cafe-hopping togehter once in a while to catch up on one another.


— the first few years were quite a blur for her for she was mostly following orders obediently and going with the flow. after all the the incidents, wins, and more that they all have gone through together as a group, it really deepens their bonds as sisters and not just workmates anymore. zara grew to love them all individually and understood them well over the years, quirks and all. her sowon sisters are literally her kryptonite at this point.

TRAINEE & IDOL LIFE
TRAINEE she was only fourteen when she started to train under jyp entertainment for about two years before she was transferred to y.i entertainment as they were already picking out trainees for their first girl group. during her two years in jyp, she didn't feel isolated as there were also chinese trainees around her that she felt safe amongst her peers. the senior trainees there also took care of her and made sure that she trained well. 

IDOL as she was going through debuting, she was constantly pushed aside and rarely have spotlight because she was only gaining english rap lines for the first few comebacks. zara goes through the first few eras with a huge feeling of inferiority which also gives her low self esteem. basically, sowon was pulling her down and she nearly gave up too. but as yujin left and seeing the after effects somehow made her think otherwise, reminding her why she went through training and debuting if she was going to just give up half way. and so, she decided to stay for the sowon and for her self growth.

as sowon continues to rise, zara immediately assists iseul in leading the group; taking the full responsibility on being the next person to be in charge after iseul. they were all doing alright until the big fight happened between yuri and another member. zara was neutral  and wasn't taking on any sides but yuri misunderstood that move of zara not taking her side at all. to make it worse, yuri being suddenly kicked out from sowon led her into a pit of guilt which she blamed herself for not being able to keep yuri from leaving. 

with nothing much going on other than comebacks, she decided to continue her studies to take her mind of the incident and got a scholarship in ewha university, completing her diploma there. years after as she's learning psychology, zara finds herself to be more stable and confident that the previous years and decided to continue her degree in communications and media study to understand more of her career world behind productions.

other than the variety queen, she was also pushed to appear on shows that mostly require physical activities or rap induced shows along with chinese roles in small drama projects thanks to the staff who was searching foreign roles and variety shows for her to join in. even she was surprised that y.i entertainment lets her join different activities from hosting to acting.

after splitting with y.i entertainment and making a one group company with the other girls in sowon, zara decides to finally showcase her wide set of skills in media study and puts them on the line. she becomes the art & creative director so she'll get first in hand on choosing the aesthetic theme for the solo debuts for the other members and herself. basically, she's the one working in pre-production for the girl's solo debuts and their comebacks along with working with the post production as well. 

in 2016, she decides to debut solo in her home country which really took her time to perfect everything continuing with releasing two more music videos in the following year, winning her an award in the fifth yinyuetai v-chart awards for the breakthrough artist of the year. since there wasn't really a need for promotions for her chinese and japanese releases, she gets ample time to work on her song-writing and aesthetic research for sowon unless hyuna or leo asks her help on pre-production which she was then credited.

sowon member zara and 2am member jo kwon was seen hanging out together at the han river, known for couples to go on dates at night. zara was seen to be rollerblading happily with jo kwon jogging next to her with a chuckle escaping his lips. the two were known to be close friends since they're both trainees as zara has trained under jyp before being transferred into y.i ent to debut in sowon. the two idols have both commented that their relationship is purely sibling love for each other and that's all there is to it.

even though the sowon member was eliminated in the semi-final round, it did not stop her from feeling anxious and pressure throughout the entire show. 

"i was a sunbae among the talented hoobaes which let them thought that i'm the best among them but they seem to forget that i'm also human."

xian qi then explained that she never competed in any rapping competitions and this is also a fresh experience just like the others are experiencing too. she then concluded that as she's a sunbae for them, she hoped that she did her best to show her skills on screen and to be a good example towards her hoobaes.
