GOHYUCK IS (NOT) FLYING HIGH

full name lee jinho – gohyuck doesn't like hearing this name. in fact, the only person who does know of his real full name is yongmi. the name reminds him of his childhood at the church; growing up in an environment full of people who hate his true nature, having to be surrounded by people who he was fearful of. ever since running away, lee jinho has been known as lee gohyuck.
other name lee gohyuck – the name is a sign of a new beginning of fully embracing his identity. gohyuck doesn't want to live with the mentality jinho was raised to have: to essentially hate who he is.

ethnicity & nationality korean

languages spoken korean is gohyuck's native language. however he doesn't have an elaborate or flowery tongue due to him being home schooled with the bare basics. it's very practical and straightforward, which does align with how he functions. gohyuck picked up english ever since he started getting into cooking and baking, which began at the age of thirteen. he mostly learned through reading cook books available in the church library. ever since joining bewitched, gohyuck has been learning through watching english cooking videos.

actors mark lee (lee daehwi, lee seungmin)

appearance 175cm & 60kg. gohyuck sports a very natural look of thick, fluffy black hair. he also wears a pair of glasses because he strains his eyes too much.
attire living in the cafe basement means gohyuck does look like he'd just rolled out of bed every morning and makes his way to the kitchen because that's exactly what he does. he goes to sleep in a fresh white (he has them in black and red as well) t-shirt, wakes up and mainly relies on a hoodie or an outerwear (denim jacket, flannel, black jacket) to make himself look presentable. while in the kitchen, he makes sure he wears a pair of black jeans at least. in the comfort of the basement, he's usually spotted in some grey sweatpants. he wears the same classic black vans which he received for his nineteenth birthday from yongmi.

       who is lee gohyuck?
the first thing yongmi noticed about the boy was how easily bored and frustrated he was. possibly due to his young age and lack of purpose, but he was abnormally unable to sit back and watch some movies. he was usually obedient, but leave him for more than an hour and gohyuck would come by the kitchen to get his hands dirty: be it wash the dishes or take notes as the older witches cooked up a storm. as she started giving him more tasks and books to study, the more she saw how hardworking gohyuck was – his work ethic was admirable to the middle-aged women. he does the most to get to his goal, to reach his standard of qualifications. there are moments where his leadership shines in the kitchen, overpowering even the most senior kitchen staff.

gohyuck works under pressure, mostly self-induced. there are times where he pushes himself to the brink of exhaustion, which is where yongmi and his friends come into play; he only listens to a select few witches that he has gained thorough respect for. the few people that gohyuck willingly turns into his true state of being just a young man, almost whiny to them: "i'm really trying my best but the souffle won't rise and it's getting on my nerves." yongmi would lead him back to his little hobbit hole of a room and settle him down at the table, "i know, but it's nearly four and you need to be up by six, get some sleep hyuck." he's gotten used to being rescued by yongmi; it's almost comforting to be babied by her.

his place is in the kitchen where things are mostly expected: where measurements are made and everything is a harmless trail and error. he belongs in an environment where he is in control over his station and perfects his pastries and polishes his plates to perfection. his favorite part about being in the kitchen is that he can opening use his magic and be at that level of efficiency. nothing pleases gohyuck like a good meal and control. without it, he goes into a place of cynicism and hopelessness. gohyuck doesn't like it when it isn't yongmi or himself turning the gears and giving direction. it throws him off and he tends to shut himself down when that occurs: hiding in his room, nose buried in-between pages of books, pen busy scribbling down notes. this is a touchy period for him where he accepts zero criticism and is very picky about who he is around and definitely won't stop at just kicking you out of the basement.

the goodness in kitchen witches that gohyuck seemingly lacks is found in the way he functions – his attention to detail, nurturing his recipes and knowledge as he adds onto the growing delicacy. the respect he has for green witches to ask for permission to harvest the vegetables and fruits. it's the little things that make gohyuck still that warm, loving witch that he's supposed to be: just a few tweaks here and there.

background accidents happen in the name of true love. lee junhyung learned that the hard way when his mistress, han sooji, got pregnant with his illegitimate son. it was an affair that went on for a few months, two witches that fell in love in the backdrop of fame. he was a renowned chef married to a human, while she was a household name in the movie industry. things get complicated when the fact is that junhyung's wife doesn't know about him being a witch, neither does she know about the affair. with his marriage and her fame on the line, the two decide to part ways but they could not bring themselves to abort their child. so they dropped him off at the doorsteps of a church in busan that acts as a make-shift orphanage. far from seoul. far from their reality.

growing up surrounded by nuns and a large group of children was a confusing time for gohyuck. he had a hard time identifying with who he was, or who actually loved him. the same sisters who sang him to sleep were the same ones who threw dirty rags at him to mop the floor. the other children were either miserable or  stood in for the nuns as the strict overseer who would physically hurt you if you got in the way; be it making too much noise or threw a temper tantrum. from a young age, gohyuck learned to blend into the sea of youthful faces. he enjoyed himself when he was allowed to and made sure he did what he was told.

perhaps the most traumatizing events in gohyuck's childhood was watching children who were caught practicing magic go through a painful process with the father and head nun who strap the child down and practice exorcism on them. the children at church were taught that witches were forms of fallen angels who need to repent or demons that posses innocent children, thinking people would not dare hurt them while possessing the body of a child. it was usually done on full display for everyone to watch, to make sure the message was clear: witches are evil. when gohyuck first stumbles upon his powers at the age of twelve, a voice in his head told him to yield and come clean to the nuns about his dirty little secret. the manipulation toyed with his head for weeks with ever night haunted by nightmares of himself being cleansed of the demon within him, the screams and tears were so real, almost as if it was the future.

to combat gohyuck's anxiety over his newfound heritage of being a witch, he picked up a strong interest in the culinary world which delighted the nuns and older children as there was someone else that could serve food to the table. for the next two years, while trying to repress his magic, gohyuck became an impressive young chef and a neat freak; the latter perhaps in fear that the nuns would sniff out his magic (when gohyuck thinks back on this, he realizes that his fear made his rational make zero sense). he focused all his energy towards making the best seaweed soup by hand, although his magic was the one responsible for making him seem perfect from making the soup, setting the table and cleaning up the mess cooking made.

as he came to terms with his magic, gohyuck realized that he was not safe in the church. it started to click in his head that this wasn't the proper way to live: cramped into a tiny room and living as a slave to the church. so he came up with a cunning plan of escape. for a few weeks, gohyuck would collect pieces of valuables from the church (i.e. cutlery, jewelry, sacred texts etc) and store them safely in a small bag. the plan was put into action when the fourteen year old was sent to the nearby wet market to pick up groceries. instead, the boy went to the local pawn shop and pawned off the valuables collected. with that money combined with the cash he was given for groceries, gohyuck bought a train ticket to get to the other side of busan.

the money ran our after two weeks of living off the streets and sitting in twenty-four hour mcdonald's chains. also because the irrational teenager in gohyuck went to the store to get himself a backpack and a baking cook book.

gohyuck knew he was screwed. a goner. he didn't have any hopes on surviving – but hey, at least he tasted two weeks of sweet freedom, right? his delusions stopped when he began to realize that he could not drop dead on the street without the police getting involved so he made his way up a mountain (for some reason, gohyuck thought dying in the mountains was a good idea). as dehydration started to kick in and blood from his lips faded, gohyuck spotted a quaint building on the top of the mountain. by that time, he was sure that he was seeing things, perhaps heaven is a cafe in the mountains. and then, all gohyuck saw was darkness.

to be continued in sections 'reaction' and 'employment'.

current lifestyle whenever gohyuck looks out the window and admires the backdrop of the forest and the delightful smiles of the other witches at bewitched, a thought does creep into his mind: why do i force myself to work so hard? why don't i allow myself to be happy? and then he finds himself in a dilemma because he's happy working on recipes and educating himself on french culinary cuisine. he absolutely loves being productive and seeing the smile on the faces who eat his pastries. however, he does wish he was capable of going outside and smelling the fresh air and not want to crawl back into the safe arms of the strong building in cafe is housed in just after thirty minutes. nevertheless he works on cakes and tarts, thanking the next witch that brings him a cup of hot chocolate or a tall glass of iced tea.

once the cafe opens for business, nothing much changes for gohyuck. he stays in the same flour stained black tee and dark pants, apron tied loosely around his hips as he continues getting freshly baked goods out of the oven and prepping for the next day. at the same time, he does the dishes when the rest of the witches are busy with the garden or with customers. rarely do you ever see gohyuck step outside of the kitchen, and when he does he gets a couple of stares as regular customers mistake him for a new employee. gohyuck usually steps out to get a book from his room or ingredients from the storage. occasionally he takes a long walk to the foot of the mountain for groceries at the market on yongmi's request (she thinks he could use some fresh air).

at the end of the day, gohyuck is the last to leave the kitchen – his station filled with little test samples of baked goods and desserts. work for gohyuck only stops at around ten, and even then he does a last sweep of the whole kiten and cafe floor before heading down to the basement where he takes a quick shower and continues studying, mumbling to himself as his journal fills up with notes. either yongmi or another witch comes down later in the evening to say goodnight to gohyuck, a reminder of the time before they head off to bed. it isn't until one in the morning that gohyuck heads to bed exhausted but content with his way of life.

trivia
– most of gohyuck's clothes are hand-me-downs from yongmi's past boyfriends. some of them are birthday presents from mostly yongmi and the older witches.

– gohyuck didn't always live in the basement. it only began when one evening he knocked on yongmi's door, begging her to give him a room further away from everyone or he would eventually just move to the basement, which is exactly what he did after yongmi told him to give it another chance after five instances of complaints of loud roommates from gohyuck. he's been living in the basement for about four years now: most would describe it as a nest of a mattress surrounded by books and notes. but gohyuck calls it home.

– really, really, really, at group projects. gohyuck works well on his own and prefers to do so.

– if gohyuck was in a regular education system, he would try to get into culinary history in french cuisine. he mainly does his own homeschooling and takes online classes when the wifi allows for good internet connection. he is definitely one of the smarter cookies in the batch of bewitched. often times, he gets asked to tutor some witches and while he doesn't mind, he would much rather be testing recipes in the kitchen and studying on his own.

– there are only two moods when crisis strikes, or two attitudes in general: either freaks out and tries to handle the situation as level-headed as possible (usually falls into a mental breakdown and is taken over by yongmi) or "we are all gonna die, might as well make pie!"
     who are his parents?
besides being a cheater and a chef, lee junhyung is a man that has been blind sighted by reputation: to the point that he doesn't register himself as a witch due to the fear of losing his relationship with regular customers and staff. this all hits harder when the mother of his illegitimate son, han sooji, goes missing after being hunted down by witch hunters. even the rich and famous are not safe. in recent news, he got a divorce with his wife due to disagreements – another way to put it: she found out his true heritage and decided she wouldn't rat him out as long as he left her alone in peace. what does junhyung do now? without the safety of his human wife, and knowing money cannot save him; does he track down his son or does he go into hiding?

while his father is stumped between his options, gohyuck can't be bothered with who his birth parents are. there are times he entertains the idea that they may love him, especially when yongmi brainstorms who his parents might be due to his powers, but those are simple ideas to gohyuck. he doesn't like to dwell on his past anymore. he likes where he is right now – bewitched feels like home, and though sometimes the witches can get on his nerves, they are still family to him. true family.

      who are his friends?
to call yongmi gohyuck's mother isn't wrong, but it isn't quite right either. the title of sister wouldn't fit right either since she has been able to keep her calm around the young man. gohyuck's guardian would be the best way to put it. she has seen him grow up enough to be labled a mother and yet she doesn't get annoyed enough to be called a sister. she is somewhere in between – knowing gohyuck like the back of her hand, knowing exactly how he reacts and thinks is one of yongmi's many specialties. she understands him more than anyone, and probably is the only person who dedicates so much time and patience towards gohyuck. she teaches him a lot about self care and magic, and guides him towards showing love to himself and others around him. some may say that gohyuck is yongmi's favorite, but can you blame the women when she has seen him grow from being the boy who feared everything and was willing to accept death on the spot to the young man who rules the kitchen and has found his true calling in life?

gohyuck likes to think of yongmi as a trusted adviser, thinks he owes her his life for pulling him off the streets. he is beyond grateful and never fails to serves her the first slice of pie and a hot cup of coffee as her breakfast everyday before heading promptly back to the kitchen. he tries his best not to bother her too much, with the growing cast of witches in her hands and to hide their identity, gohyuck cannot even imagine the stress she must be under. so he does his best to get into bed before she has to drag him down, although she still has to treat him like a child at least once a week. (gohyuck is a non-violent witch, usually using taunts but if anyone is to lay a finger on yongmi, he probably would snap.)

the guardian lee yongmi, forties, elemental witch

other member of the bewitched cafe have been told by yongmi and senior witches to occationally check in on gohyuck in the kitchen. some of them are in awe of the young man, at his skill and pure talent in magic itself. these are usually witches that gohyuck aren't close to, probably newbies or just those he doesnt't find much connection with. others get on his nerves, usually the ones who talk too much or get too judgmental over the way he does things in the kitchen. those who cross his golden boundaries, especially when it comes to his hobbit hole will get chased out by a flying broomstick.

there are some witches, however, that gohyuck forms a strong attatchment too automatically: green witches. no matter how nosey they may be or even just plain weird and quirky, he does have a soft spot for them. he enjoys observing them speak to the trees and the animals around the cafe. gohyuck also respects them enought to ask before harvesting ingredients, which many of the green witches appreciate (some fawn over).

reaction it was amidst the heat of the summer, most of the children taking a nap and teenagers were being taught by the nuns in the study room. left alone was twelve year old gohyuck who should have been asleep, but as per usual, was working on some uncompleted chores by the other children. his mind was filled with images of brooms and mops doing the work, rags wiping down the wooden panels while on his knees; his hands folding clean laundry as he hummed a soft melody.

gohyuck's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a loud splash behind him. as he turned, he was shocked to see a broomstick sweeping the floor and a mop splashing into the bucket of water – both actions put to an immediate halt due to the sheer panic set in gohyuck. the boy wasn't stupid: he knew what this meant. he was born to be despised by society. worse of all, despised  by the nuns, who taught the children that witches were fallen angels sent by the lord to repent for their sins. in the presence of the lord, how did gohyuck manage to sneak his demonic self into the house of god?

for weeks on end, gohyuck couldn't stop thinking about it. concentrating on studying became harder and harder each day he denied his abilities and true heritage. he prayed for it all to go away and as he prayed, his pen would start to write in his notebook, 'then go.' as hard as he repressed his magic, it acted on its own: it was like his mind said no but his soul said yes. gohyuck would catch himself multitasking using his powers – taking the kettle off the fire, writing his thoughts down, even setting the table when no one was looking.

it took him two years to decide that if he could not repress it, he might as well learn to control it. gohyuck spent his nights lifting glasses of water from the tables of the seven other children he shared a room with. tucking the younger ones into bed as they slept all while sitting on his bed, basically studying himself and his magic as his pen wrote down his thoughts in a journal.

registration gohyuck never knew about the act of registering until he was taken in by yongmi. she was the one who enquired him about his own registration, only to be met with a confused look. due to the circumstances of gohyuck's birth and abandonment, his parents never registered him neither did the nuns suspect him of being a witch. in the eyes of the law, lee gohyuck (or lee jinho, as stated in his legal documents) is a human. thankfully, he hasn't been caught, perhaps due to the fact that he has confined himself to the cafe and rarely heads outside, unless it is too the market place at the foot of the  geumjeong mountains.

employment collapsing on the foot of the cafe from dehydration is not what most would consider a normal initiation to bewitched. yongmi took in the fourteen year old off from the steps and patched him up. while gohyuck was in deep rest, the older women observed as his journal flipped open and his pen writing down, "thank you." once again, his subconscious taking over. it was then yongmi decided that gohyuck would be safer at bewitched than going back on the streets.

when gohyuck woke, he volunteered his services to yongmi, telling her that he needs to repay her kindness – she calmly placed a hand on his shoulder, "i'm just like you. you're safe here." the young boy crumbled onto the floor, sobbing into the shoulder of the women he just met.

ever since, gohyuck has been working at bewitched ever day of the week. it's been six years and he has grown to fit right into the scene of kneading pastry dough and taking a batch of freshly baked muffins out of the oven.

statistics it has been suggested by yongmi that gohyuck may be the son of two powerful witches due to his natural control over his powers and ability to easily reach from room to room. as an avid learner, he picks up on new spells quickly. however due to his prodigy level of magic, gohyuck severely lacks in proper technique and skill – moreso going with the flow of what feel right.

comments inspiration for gohyuck is claire from the bon appétit test kitchen. do watch a video or two if you'd like to get an idea of gohyuck in the kitchen. i do feel like i have written gohyuck in this app in a very particular way, like his personality section is really this entire piece of writing and not so much just one section, im sorry if that has affected the way you've been able to process him.
scene suggestions drama can be introduced into gohyuck's current storyline through his father. possibly through unintentionally leading witch hunters to the cafe in search of his son. gohyuck definitely wouldn't give two s though. another place that can be drawn into the storyline would be possible love interest or even just a really new witch that tries to break into gohyuck's shell because the guy does have slight trust issues even after six years of serving bewitched.
