I'd first like to ask: How would you know if someone appreciate's your work and effort? You wouldn't.

Not unless that person or group of people would tell you or at least give you a sign that you liked it. And here is why an upvote button exists here in AFF. It's the sign that you can give to the author that you like their work, when you're too shy or not confident enough to write down your thoughts, or even if you don't know what to say.

The upvote button, unlike a comment is for the whole story, so if you really like the story so much that every time there's a new update or when you reread it, and you feel so happy, sad or even angry (just write it down constructively), by all means, write a comment. It doesn't have to be long, just tell the author how you feel and maybe include the part that made you feel that way.

Now this feature won't work not unless you give 10 comments and then verify your email address. This is AFFs way to fight of spam.
