Nell's father, Thomas Smith, died in a car accident when Nell was still in her mother's womb. Nell's mother got sick after giving birth to her and died when Nell was about 5 months old. love story nell and hyun bin met in the most coincidental circumstance in which they both were seated next to each other on a plane while going on to a solo vacation of their own. it was 2010 and both of them were heading to ROME, italy. the 14 hours on the plane made them buddies as they talked and found out tha they have many common interest. it helped them getting along very well. they even exchange their numbers and decided to hang out when they get back to korea. apparently their hang out happened before getting back to korea as they ran into each other very often in rome. they decided to enjoy their trip together. they went sightseeing, shopping, eating and pretty much did everythng together while they were in rome. they parted when nell's flight back to korea was scheduled 2 days earler than hyun bin.

back in korea, they keep in touch with each other and meet everytime they both had free time. they get closer and can be categorizd as best friends.

3 months before hyun bin enlists the marine corps, hyun bin gathered this confidence and asked nell to date him. and nell was okay with it as she also had a crush on hyun bin after few times hanging out wih him.
